Nice one, Erik!
Jesters also had a serious role to play at court which was to remind the monarch that he or she was a human being and so mortal.  That's why jesters could get away with saying things to or about the monarch others (even great lords) dare not say.

Jesters were also known as 'Fools.'
The Fool in Terry Pratchett's Wyrd Sisters sleeps outside the door of his master's bedchamber as a token of his devotion, as well as to keep out drafts.
