Title: New traffic collision unit for Copt Hewick Volunteer Fire Brigade
Post by: playmofire on January 07, 2010, 15:53:53
The recent bad bout of snow has put extra pressure on CHVFB's resources, partly because of the extra number of road traffic collisions calling for the Brigade's attendance and partly because the snow conditions have caused problems for normal two wheel drive appliances trying to reach collision scenes.  As a result, the Brigade's workshop staff have equipped two 3181 four wheel drive vehicles as road traffic collision units.  Usually, the 3181 is used as a GP (general purpose) unit, for example, as a towing unit, for transferring crew or equipment between stations or as a forward command vehicle, so this is a new direction for these vehicles.

The first photos show the two versions the workshops have produced, starting with a front view, the only obvious change here being the use of the lower profile blue light unit introduced with the new ambulance and emergency doctor car.  The second pic shows the rear view of the original design with two floodlights fitted to the roof, while the third and fourth photos show the Mark 2 version incorporating the lighting mast from the 3178 trailer unit, one with the unit lowered for travelling and the other with the mast raised for use.

The new units carry a crew of three and a false floor has been fitted in the rear to improve equipment carrying capacity. Under the false floor a tray of small gear (basic hand tools such as spanners, wrenches, screwdrivers etc.) is carried while the major rescue equipment and first aid gear is carried in the rear.

Apart from the small gear, all the equipment is easily accessible from the rear or from the rear side doors.  Traffic control equipment (cones and a warning sign), a shovel and a broom are carried and accessed through the left hand rear door with the rest of the equipment being accessed through the rear double doors.

We end with some detail shots of the equipment.  The introduction of the new rescue gear with the new fire engine range is what's allowed these new vehicles to be developed, so this is a key part of the equipment, the spreader and cutter attachments fitting neatly into the box which comes with the 4825 fire accessory set, together with one of the new, small, fire axes, a small crow bar and a torch.  A small supply of petrol is carried for the rescue gear's compressor motor, together with two fire extinguishers.  Lastly, basic first aid gear and oxygen gear are also carried.

Finally, my thanks to the Brigade photographer and the crew for braving the elements to take the photos, and to you for taking the time to read this topic.

Very nicely equipped rescue 4x4. Your trucks are always so well thought out and well equipped I just hope anybody who ever has to rescue me is 1/2 as prepared as you are.

Quite a few I'm afraid with the bad weather.  I'm planning to do some photos shortly when I have a bit more time.
