Ideas for medieval and fantasy.
« on: October 10, 2011, 21:07:29 »
I have lots of ideas so figured to start a new topic about it.
Maybe some of it might have been mentioned yet but I am pretty confident that most of it has not been mentioned yet.

Plenty of more ideas to come, but I figure to make one topic for medieval and fantasy, and in later weeks make a topic about other similar themes as well.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
First of all: the fantasy theme.
I'd like to take it back to more the style that it used to be when it was first launched.

Norse mythology might be a good direction for one batch in this theme.
It brings both vikings and fantasy.

Set ideas:
-Giant with club in forest.
Yep, a giant clicky. He could be twice the size of a regular clicky and have a beard.
The bits of forest that come with it could include hills shaped in a way that he can sleep there.
His expression should be neutral, so that he could be either good or evil, or just misunderstood.

-Dwarven smithy.
A workshop in a cavern where several dwarves create armor and weapons.
There could also be a corner with seats around a fireplace for them.

-Feast.
Several clickies in the forest enjoying some good ale and food, kind of like the old medieval set
but this time it comes with two satyrs with instruments.

-Troll attack.
A big troll attacks helpless clickies, but there could be one brave warrior to defend them.
Could come with a covered wagon and a small wooden tower with a bell to raise the alarm,
A tree and a bush and maybe some oxes to simulate farmers fleeing the troll.
The troll could be the same size as the giant, but with some different parts to be monstrous.

-Ride of the valkyries.
Several blonde female warriors with long braided hair on white horses with decorated armor and weapons,
maybe of the shiny material. Could come with a waterfall and a piece of beautifull forest, depending on how
big they want to make the set.

-Hovel with gnomes.
A nice little hovel with an old woman and her grandson, and a garden with various plants and vegetables.
Lots of work for the child and old woman, so there are several gnomes with the set.
Baby size clickies with pointy hats and beards, and children's hands so they can hold items.

-Longboat with sea monster.
Brave vikings fighting a sea monster. As a bonus, the monster could have a mouth big enough to put a clicky in it,
and have storage space inside. It could be opened up to get to the stuff inside.
A monster that can actually have clickies and other things in its belly could expand play possibilities greatly.

That pretty much covers the norse mythology theme, could always be filled up with tiny sets featuring the
gnomes, dwarves and maybe another troll.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Moving on to: classic fantasy.
Same theme yes, different batch. This focuses on the utter cliches of fantasy, more like the original batch.

-Wizard tower.
A grand round tower with a kindly old wizard in it and his apprentice, and furthermore all kinds of alchemy equipment,
bookcases and such, and maybe a baby dragon.

-Dragon with knight in shiny armor.
The complete cliche, a mean dragon and a blonde knight in shining armor on a white horse to fight it.
Could also include damsel in distress.

-King's castle.
The largest set of the bunch, the grand castle of an old king with a beautifull daughter.
There could be a tall tower for a plotting evil advisor/wizard to live in, several guards, a herald and several
servants. A great portion of the castle could be indoors, with a throne room and dining room with a small kitchen.
Could include a ghost in a dark dungeon as well.

-Dark castle.
A smaller castle housing a black knight and his servants. Obviously the main antagionist.
Could include a dungeon to put the dragon in, an executioner and an evil sorceress.

-Band of adventurers.
Pretty much a cliche band of heroes with horses and a covered wagon, carrying various appearal.
The band could include a female archer, male warrior, female wizard, and a male thief.
A nice mix of clickies that can appeal to boys and girls.
Accesoires could be camp equipment such as food, a campfire and a chest.

-Witch with cottage.
A nice little house that could be used for many purposes.
It could have a chimney and a large cauldron at the fireplace, and some alchemy equipment,a broom, a raven,
a black cat and various other items.

-Additional henchmen of the black knight.
A nice little set with three armed henchmen.

-Soldiers with treasure.
Two soldiers that match the king's soldiers carrying a treasure chest with gold.

-Goblins.
A small band of goblins, creatures the size of a child clickie. They could come with weaponry and maybe a small cart.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Moving on now to medieval:
The balance between civilian and millitairy needs to be restored.
A thief or patrolling soldier could often be included in such civilian sets, to still give them potential for a bit of action.
Instead of focusing on two warring factions, it could focus on a single kingdom and bandits/forestmen.
Moving on to suggested sets:

-Inn.
Downstairs there could be a bar with a large keg and several barrels.A small room (1x1 by steck standards) could
be used as a small kitchen with a cauldron and some baskets.
In the main room with the bar, there are also two long tables with benches and several wooden mugs.
A wide indoors stairs could head upstairs, where there could be two or three small rooms, they could contain just a bed.
Clickies could be: Inn keeper, child of the Innkeeper, female customer (could be used as Innkeeper's wife), traveling bard and a guard.
The sign outside could be blank, and the set could come with several stickers to put on it, allowing different names for the Inn.

-Bandit celebration.
Several bandits with a table and benches (matches with the Inn) having food and treasure on their table, along with
weaponry.Could include three bandits and maybe a guard. (depicted spying on them behind a bush or small tree)

-Blacksmith's workshop.
A building like the standard size medieval house could be used for this.
An anvil, a forge and all the needed blacksmith tools could be included along with armor and weapons, and various other
metal objects to show that blacksmiths did more than equip armies. Upstairs could be a bed and a child's bed.
Two tables and various weapon and armor racks could be included, along with a chest or two to display and stock all the
items.
Clickies could be: the Blacksmith and his apprentice son, and a knight customer.

-Six market stands.
Following up on the collection series used right now for horses and bikes, six market stands are here to
form a medieval market together. Each could come with a single clicky salesperson, the market stand and their
wares. Stands could be somewhat smaller than the one currently in the DS store.
Stands suggestions:
-Pottery.
-Fish.
-Groceries.
-Butcher.
-Weaver.
-Farmer. (chickens, eggs, milk, etc.)

-Church.
Seeing how they had monks in the past, and that religion is a big part of medieval life, a small church should be included.
A lectrum and several benches could be included, along with a bell in the tower. A monk and several commoners could
be included. No weapons since that might discourage religious groups from purchasing the set for educational purposes.

-Watchtower.
A tower of two stories high with a small storage on the ground floor, a room with a bed on the second floor and the guards
can stand on the look out on top of the tower.
Two or three guards could be included with various weaponry, but also two torches or lanterns.
The design of the tower should allow it to easily be connected to a wall but not too obviously.

-Jeweler.
A jewelry store with various necklaces and bracelets on display, and all kinds of jewels.
Comes with a small storage room that can be locked and a chest with gold pieces.
Also has a Desk or table for the Jeweler to stand behind, and a good bed upstairs.
Clickies include: Jeweler, guard, noblewoman and perhaps a thief.

-Hovel.
A simple medieval house for commoners, a bit smaller than the standard medieval house.
A fireplace, some simple beds, a table and some stools could be the interiour, along with various baskets, some
food items and a small pile of wood outside.
Clickies could include: Father, Mother, Boy, Girl.

-Farm.
A farmhouse with stables, including several cows and chickens and a family.
Various items such as furniture, sacks of grain and plenty of hay, and of course items such as pitchforks, a scythe,
a woodcutter's axe and a shovel. Maybe an old fasioned plow as well that can be put on an ox.
Aside from the farmer's family, there could also be a cat to hunt mice.

-Bridge.
A stone bridge with a river under it and several bushes and a tree, maybe some animals as well.
Included clickies: several bandits/forestmen and a nobleman on horseback with a small coinpurse on his belt.
(just a little bag that would presumably contain gold)
Optionally the included tree could be rather bare and able to be tipped over to create a roadblock, as if it was cut down.
Should include an axe to cut it down then of course. Could be a superset.

-Royal carriage.
A royal carriage with a servant controlling the horses, a knight on horseback and two guards that can hold on to the
carriage. A chest with gold could also be included and the queen inside the carriage.

-War room.
An interiour set for the castle, from where the king plans his strategies.
A large table with a map is included, and various miniature troops and catapults to put on the map to work out
strategies. Other items are a chair, a rug and possibly a chest with several scrolls and a parchment with the king's seal.
Clickies could include: the king, two armored and armed knights, an elderly advisor and a messenger.

-Stables.
A small set, just consisting out of small stables that can fit three horses. Comes with two horses, buckets, hay
and a stable boy with pitchfork.

-Town well.
Small set with a minstrel carrying a lute, and a maid with two buckets.

-Town square platform.
A raised platform to put on the townsquare, the place for announcements and executions.
(not including an executioner to keep it friendly though.)
Comes with a messenger, guard, stocks and an unsavory looking clicky to put in the stocks.

-Fisherman's boat.
A small fishing boat with a sail and two fishermen and various nets and lots of fish, barrels and a fishing rod.
Could include a small wooden dock as well.

-Merchant ship.
A small ship with a merchant and a sailor, and a small storage compartment to put goods.
Comes with plenty of barrels, chests and other items to sell.

-Bandit's hide out.
A wooden house in the forest with several rocks and trees and plenty of hiding places like a hollow tree stump and
a storage place under the rocks which is more often used. The house itself could be slightly raised and have a storage
place under the ground through a hatch, where a chest could be put or a clicky if they lay down.
Could come with various furniture including a rug to put over the hatch and a table and chairs.
Three bandit/forestmen clickies could be included along with a dog.

-Prison.
Can be used seperatly, but can also be attached to the castle.
Instead of just having a little jail cell somewhere in a set, this set is completely dedicated to a prison.
Two floors high, with stairs both on the inside and the outside, creating a basement feeling for the prison.
Aside from a secret escape route, there is no exit on the ground floor.
Included are a table and chairs for the guards, keys, three seperate jail cells (one with secret escape)
Plenty of dangling chains too, mice, a guard dog, a ball and chain and straw beds for the prisons.
Included clickies: two armed guards and two prisoners. (one bandit and a shabby character with tattered clothes)
Maybe a bed for the guards too, to sleep in turns.

-Farmer cart.
A farmer and his dog, pulling a cart with various goods to sell in the city.

-Archers.
A group of archers with two practicing targets.
Included clickies: archery captain with three archers.

-Royal hunting party.
A small set with a prince, a squire and a soldier, along with several hunting dogs, a hunting falcon, a deer, a boar and several
rabbits. No animal families since that might make it look rather brutal.
The prince could have a horse, sword and bow with arrows, and the squire and guard could carry a stick to which the boar
could be tied onto. Maybe the squire could carry some sort of weapon pack on his back that holds several weapons. Like a
wider scabbard that can hold three swords, or another combination of hand weapons. Could be some sort of shoulder bag.

-Brewer with cart.
A monk on a small ox cart filled with barrels.

-Treasury.
Another room that can be used to expand the castle.
Unlike any set ever made, this one is completely devoted to a rich treasury.
Which means a rediculous amount of gold pieces, jewelry, treasure chests, some gold armor and weapons, jewels and
one or two guards to protect it.
The treasury could be rather small but could have a roof with battlements and stairs going up. the back open for play
and the door could be large and thick. Perhaps there could be some kind of trap on the inside as well.

-Outpost.
Tree with small platform and ladder, comes with a forestman archer.

-Town wall.
Stone wall with battlements and stone stairs up. Various accesoires such as a barrel, small ballista and weapon rack.
Included clickies: archer, guard with spear and torch or lantern, captain with sword and shield, peasant.

-villagers.
Small set with various villagers.
clickies include: Maid with water buckets, farmer with pitchfork, merchant, minstrel, mother with baby.

These are some really great ideas! I think I would even get into the medieval theme if we had all those great civilian sets. And I love the idea of a giant klicky! If they made the molds for that, it would have a lot of potential.

Forgot to mention one idea still:

A trebuchet. They like making siege engines as of late, why not make one that is accurate and has never been made by neither Playmobil or Lego?

A giant clicky might definatly have some uses, the base parts could be used for the troll, and if proven popular they could add a set with a female giant in a later year, so he won't get lonely.  :)

Civilian sets still have a good appeal I think these days. With kids playing Roleplaying games too, with shops and taverns.

Quite a comprehensive list and thanks for puting all these ideas together. As I have a few medieveal sets and klickies and i like to think i have spent a lot of time on that theme ( well since 1978 to be precise ) i will agree with the notion of bringing rural sets back. The concept of not just the bakery but more sets , definitely such as  an Inn, Farmer's house for example that have been issued before is very appealing and probably easy for playmobil given they re issued the bakery etc . I would love to see a variety of such sets and the market stall being issued with various options for sale etc , a must if you ask me for a medieval set. Shops like the 5448 Pottery are awesoem with a lot of items and woudl make a fine addition. I think playmobil doesnt need to re invent the wheel all the basic and key sets were available in 1977 . ANd i think its a move that could be combined with some educational cds and/or such promos about life in the middle ages which would make these sets far more educational soemthing playmobil sets are missign more and more which i strongly disagree with . I think such a notion woudl be welcomed by many parents ( and collectors who buy lots of eerrr steck houses and steck ... ) . On the subject of a giant klikcy i like the idea but overall all these ideas remind me of LOTR and clearly playmobil has steered away from such a theme and has its own dragonland series which i have but i dont find that impressive as it lacks a certain ambiance and character if you ask , though i think these sets are quite impressive ( big dragon, tall tower etc ) . I think the question of creating a variety of townfolk would be a great idea , i am fed up with the sooooo many varieites of knights, foot soldiers and barbarians and they tend to look more and more primitive also . i think there are too many of these and non !!! medieval townfolk , back in the late 70s there were lots and thats something i think playmoil needs to consider sewriously especially if they bring back the above mentioned houses. I love the idea of a trebuchet !!!
:knight: Steck is Holy . Bring back more steck sets and its guardians , the Nuremberg Guards :knight:

The educational part definatly needs to be improved, and its simple enough to add an armed guard or a thief to any set to still have some battle potential. In that contest it would be seen more as protection too, a just cause.

I seriously doubt that civilian sets would not be profitable. They are liked in the modern them after all, so why not in medieval? Its not good for children anyways to force girls to play only with pink princesses and boys to just play with warmachines.  Something in the middle allows boys and girls to play together, and as a result grow up with more understanding of the opposite gender.

There simply is no cause for the clickies to fight for currently in the medieval theme, at least no good cause. It could either be about money or land, but not about defending the helpless.

It might be a very strong theme if they design it in such a way that the combination of the entire theme forms a castle with a village. That would also encourage kids to get all of it.

Hello guys!

Please try to keep your posts short... or shorter.
It is even better if can split this kind of post into 3 or 4, the discussion will develop better and more people will be interested.
Most people will avoid such long posts to read, don't matter how interesting the post is.
Just an advice.

Thank you.

Some great ideas and I too would be broke (but rather happy!). I would love to see the giant.
