Thanks for the confirmation WoT (that red shoes was period)...I think I can convince my head if I can find some drawings (not napoleonics but earlier) with red shoes  ;)

Just look at the color of some animal hides.
If there are red animal hides, then there are red shoes... armor... helmets... ;D

none on my side of the globe  :P
I suppose some cowhides might look reddish-brown but presumebly youre refferring to red dyed animal hides (not likely on a Manchu ;) )

But what about dyes! I've seen red, blue, green leather hides of bulls.

sorry, I meant Asian 'barbarians'(or ancient Celts) might not have dyed their leather shoes red during say 3000BC - maybe 500AD (not modern handbags/shoes) ;)

I was referring to cowhides, which can look very red. :)
I wasn't referring to dyes, which they had, but I do not think they used them for shoes.
I know wood workings would be dyed and/or painted,
but the only color I know for sure that was a period dye would be blue. :)
