I miss hacked up pirate ships
« on: August 24, 2011, 07:13:58 »
When i first got back into playmobil pirates theme, I was heavily inspired by seeing the likes of MacGayver and similar conversions where folks were hacking up ships and splicing them together, and doing heavy customizing to the hulls and masts and rigging.

Like extending the hulls and decks.  And I also remember seeing DeadEye Dick add cannons below deck on the 3050 style ship.  And adding cranes to carry the longboats.  Cutting holes for extra masts and sails.

Of course I enjoy custom repaints and custom sails ala EmmaJ as well.

And who's custom 4444 was it with the custom bottom hull.....jimbos?   And I forgot...someone was making a steel hulled ship out of a playmobil cargo ship....whatever happened with that?

Please someone, hack up some ships!  I can't ride off my black pearl custom forever!  Need more blood!

My pearl has less and less left to do to it, though there always seems to be something else to do to it.  I'm debating between doing an HMS victory using a zizzle blackpearl hull (which is huge) but in playmo style using playmo cannons and masting....or making a queen annes revenge ship (blackbeard) using a 3286.  Also want to do an HMS bounty using a 4290.  Or an HMS Suprise using a 3286.

Anyone else have any custom ships on the drawing board?

I'd love to do what you did Atto, or what MacGayver has, I have sooo many pirate ships but I am no craftsman I can't even cut a sticker straight  :-[

Maybe I will join Atto. ;D
My first cutting experience was when I cut out the bottom of the lower deck to make more head room in my Albus...
Since then, I have been dreaming of a ship like MacGayvres. ;)
Well, not that big.  8}

However, I am hampered by fairly expensive ships...
and now Playmobil's climbing prices. ::)
Depending on how much the 5135 ship costs I will probably make a large ship. ;D

Atto, why don't you give a go at smaller boats? To create an "auxiliary flotilla" for the Pearl?
I'm confident you could make some smashing stuff.
Cheers!

hehe, i wouldn't put my custom pearl on par with anything macgayver has crafted.  I remember when I first sailed the pearl in its early stages, and a passerby asked me if I "made" it.  Rather than explain that it was made out of hacked up parts of various ship toys, repainted, and then given extra sails and masts simply cut from cloth and wooden dowels, I just said "yes" (I made it).  But when I said "yes," I looked guiltily at my daughter (who knows the truth about the nature of its construction) because I felt like I was lying by saying I "made" the ship.  Macgayver's ships are heavily customized and constructed.

@tahra and wolf: What I did anyone can do if you have a hacksaw and a dremel and some sticks and string.  Admittedly, I wasn't even that precise with my cuts because I figured this is a haunted decrepit old pirateship with cuts and holes and rotten sails and wood.  It was TIME CONSUMING, but not very difficult, IMO.

@WOT: spare 3286 hulls on ebay and craigslist: I never pay more than $20 for them.  I don't mind missing masts and rigging, because wooden dowels and non-playmo string and fabric can replace them EASILY (unless you're a playmopurist).  Besides, real rigging and cloth sails is so much cooler IMO.  The only reason I pay market price for a ship is if I intend to keep it in its original playmobil form (I try to collect one of each ship to leave uncustomized unless its factory form is just too ugly).

@Primus:  I have started customizing the 4444 and the ghost version 4444 (i forget the number).  Gave it real masts and rigging, made it a square rigged with two jibs and a spanker.  But hardly hacking them up, hehehe.

I wanna see more of other people's hackjobs please :D

Of course after hearing this I went directly to ebay...
WOW! There are some sales for cheap hulls I might buy... :)

Well, once I figured ANYONE would be able to paint a camo soldier. I mean, it's blurs of brown and green. What can I say. Used alcohol to remove the mess.  :-[   Some people (including yours truly) were just born without ANY customizing abilities :(

I used a hacksaw many times... I was never able to cut anything straight  I did a lot of scratching off after that to make the thing straight... as for a dremel... I have no clue how to use it... :-[
And about painting... I tried doing a few details and used ducktape...you dont want to see the results... nothing works for me if its not a big object and need to use only one spraypaint to cover it all...

Atto, I'm gonna post some more "common custom-ships" soon... :P

I've recently started work on a 3940-based trimaster, and work is progressing well: the hulls are cut.  ;D Now I've only to find out how to build the pieces into a big ship
Serious now. As I haven't build any before and I have no technical schooling at all, I was planning to follow Macgayver's "building of the Unicorn" for the hulls & decks assembly (materials to use and where to cut/glue), but because of family matters (again) and loosing my workspace at my dad's house, any further work has to be postponed for months at least, if not longer... :(

If you want to see a lot of other ship-customizing with cutting & glueing, you should subscribe on the German forums "Klickywelt" or "Funtasticplastic";  a lot of other folks there are making magnificent ships, from 3940-based trimasters to Mississippi-boats and even US civil war confederate submarines!

Resistance is futile, you will be boarded!
