I'm aiming to make a Hogwarts (any excuse to buy steck  ;D ) and hopefully Hogsmead for the Kirkbean Exhibition in August and I'm using steck, but with a few system x rocks thrown in!

I say steck. The price of steck depends on where you live. I know here in the US, I have paid premium for what I have. I see that some people say they have come across great deals on steck but I have not seen it yet. BTW, the new fairytale castle will look great with a little gray paint.

Well.... i'm a fan of system X over steck in general, but I think it has to do with what I'm building. When I'm working on modern structures for my zoo and everything, I find system X easier to use and more practical. However, from what I have seen, I think maybe if I were trying to build a castle, steck would be more practical. So in this case, I think I would vote for steck, even though I prefer system x usually.

System X as bb noted is more versatile in modern projects. But when you want an older feel for castles & medevil projects, you can't go wrong with Steck.
Forget about all of the other stuff,....all we need is the reintroduction of the 3526 Fire Engine!

I quite like the new asymetric castles - they look like real castles like the main castle in Neuremberg. The system X castles have the andvantage that they require a lot less assembling (I'm not a builder, so I don't mind having less versatility.)
I do have a lot of steck: at least two complete castles (3666 and 3667), three towers (Schuldturm, 3665 and 4063), a lot of wall/gate sets like the Castle Assault, several other buildings and a lot of spare parts. I really love these sets, but when I moved house 5 years ago I had to take them apart and box them, and I haven't got around to reassembling them - partly becasue I just don't have the time, and partly because I hate building. I also dislike the wobbliness of steck castles, it's not easy to pick them up in large sections and move them without the risk of everything coming apart.

Then I really envy your lack of problems, as I've had quite different experiences, unfortunately.  :-\
