Playmobil Habitats.
« on: January 17, 2011, 22:48:03 »
My son has a Betta, my step daughter a pair of guinea pigs. Both need habitat (the Betta needs a play to play, the guineas need a place to hide. I’m wondering if PM castles, etc, could be used for them, especially for the Betta (I actually have a ship I wanted to get rid of anyways, and I could easily fill her hull with tank rocks to make her sink for a place for him to play). ¿Any comments?
If I’m jealous, you did SOMETHING right. Keep it up. :D

I think the ship of the betta is a great idea...most of all if you want to get rid of the ship!
I don't know about castles though....depends on the size of the guineas you might need a big castle!

I think it's an awesome idea! I've been thinking if i ever set up my aquarium again, I want to decorate it with playmobil. The problem is, playmobil floats. So the challenge is figuring out how to tie it all down to weights or something to keep it where you want it. But if you wanted to really go all out, you could have a diving bell exploring the wreckage of the sunken ship, or a scuba diver in a shark cage, with the shark trying to get in. The possibilities are endless!

The guinea pigs will chew your castles! It would be better to get them pet approved housing due to ingestion problems! Beware of molar teeth overgrowth. If they stop eating within 48 hours they could die! Take them to a small animal vet immediately that will tell you they know about guinea pigs. They are required to chew continually to keep their teeth ground down. Use a lot of timothy hay for constant chewing. They love romaine lettuce, spinach leaves, & kale. Alfalfa hay for treats only 'cause it can cause kidney problems in access.

They're so cute! I've always wanted one, but my mom wouldn't let me have any kind of rodent when I was a kid, and I just haven't gotten around to it since I got married.

I also recommend having this book on hand that you can print off of the internet & pay through Pay Pal for $9.99. It is a very informative book that can keep your GP healthy & happy!

Bill, you sound like me with my doves. I don't have any anymore, but I was absolutely crazy  about them. They are unhappy if not kept in male/female pairs, and they put out two pair of babies every month, year round, so it got to be too much, and they had to go. But I sure miss having them around.
