For medieval themes, I feel like the early 1990's were the best  :'(

I estimate I’ve purchased over 2,ØØØ sets at a grand total of maybe 2Ø,ØØر total parts. Of this, I have had ONE defective part (a motorcycle wheel that was malformed and I just never got around to sending it in to be replaced).
Take it for what it’s worth; I’ve had generally the same overall luck with other manufacturers of plastic toys.
I’ve had many pieces break; Some to abuse, other to age, and even a few to being played with.
If I’m jealous, you did SOMETHING right. Keep it up. :D

Hi

Andy I bet you have a lot more parts than you think if you have over 2000 sets. A single simple klicky is made up of about 7 ( 2 arms, legs, head, hair, torso & skeleton) and that is just a simple one . Think of a Knight with all his armor and weapons or a Fireman or woman (I love that Monty joke)

I think what is in question is if Playmobil in general is getting flimsier  (correct me if I am wrong)

Yes, it's getting flmisier and also I feel like the quality control is getting worse. What I mean by that is not having the correct inventory....having a piece missing or a wrong piece... something that doesn't fit...

I have stated at the 4006 preview that quite a few items were missing... I have also noted defectiveness or rather incompleteness, at klickies, like boots or arms greaves not being complete... I recall Sylvia has also pointed that out at just4klicks.

Certainly, there are sometimes problems with quality control not being 100%, e.g. missing items or malformed items or printing not 100%, but bearing in mind the number of parts in a set and the quantity Playmobil produce, this is only to be expected and so long as problems like these are limited and there is an efficient method for replacing the faulty part or supplying the missing part, it's something that has to be accepted.  What is important, though, is that people who buy sets with faulty or missing parts brings this to the notice of Playmobil as, otherwise, Playmobil will not know things are going wrong and so cannot do anything to stop things going wrong.  This also applies to buying from DS.  In one year (and I put in about an order a month to UK DS) on two successive orders the same part was missing but on the invoice.  I reported this and the parts were sent to me.  On the second occasion, the member of staff I contacted at UK DS told me that the packer in Germany needed to watch their work because if there were a third occurrence they would be in trouble.

As regards Playmobil becoming more flimsy, this will be partly accounted for by new mixes of plastic following the banning of some chemicals previously used in the process.  However, the fact that the feel of the item is flimsier doesn't mean the quality is lower or it is more likely to break.  I would imagine also that over time to contain costs the thickness of the plastic may be reduced, but I am also sure that there will be trials by Playmobil to test that the items made with the thinner plastic still have an acceptable "life" before deciding to market them.

And this might be part of the reason why many buildings today seem to be only mere shadows of what they used to be.  Look at the new Dairy Farm, for instance, to see how substantial of a barn you actually get!

As shown in this thread: http://www.playmofriends.com/forum/index.php?topic=5701.0

I know part of it is obviously 'playability' as the open structure actually allows children to maneuver better inside the structure, but there is a point ...

Hmm, maybe this is the adaptation for the adult collectors.  Make the building more open so big fat adult hands can get in there better?  Well, I guess you asked for more consideration for adult collectors ...   ;D

My brother used to edit a gaming magazine, and as part of every review he included a "Heft Test".

This is very simple "quick and dirty" measure of value - weigh the unopened box, and divide by the price.

We could easily initiate this at Playmofriends, using Grammes, Euros and Dollars as units, to get two ratios - grammes/Euro and grammes/Dollar.

The Euro or Dollar cost would come directly from Playmobil's website - German for the Euro, the US for the Dollar.
Obviously you need access to the price on the website for this to work, so only current sets can be rated accutrately, but we might get some interesting results.

I would suggest not using the box as Playmobil likes to change sizes for marketing strategies. I like the idea though
