Chapter XIII.

At this night the men could sleep calmly. The next morning they were well rested. The group crossed the Thunder River, which formed the frontier between MITTLAND and the South Realm at this point.

They followed the Large Trading Road and avoided however the contact to other travelers. On the road they always changed the horses, so that these did not fatigue so fast. Thus they progressed rapidly.

Invisibly for the remaining the wolves supervised the surrounding field of the group. They reported to ARN, what and above all whom they saw. ARN used this knowledge in order to find good lay-by for the night.

The travellers had agreed to go around the post office stations and hotels of the South Realm. Thus it succeeded to them to cross unnoticed the South Realm in eight days. In the evening of the eightth day, the twelfth day of their journey, they reached the Steep Ones Rock.

At the foot of the Four Fingers they broke a night camp open. The king instructed the soldiers. „No fire, we would present us as a target. The pass is an ideal occasion for an ambush. Perhaps scouts lurk already here.“ The king ordered two soldiers to take the first guard. They ate and drank from their supplies and then they laid down to sleep.

ARN and the old hunter conversed quietly. „Do you have heard something? “, HARUM wanted to know. „Tonight we are unimpaired. No human soul in the proximity. The wolves do not go however into the mountains. There we must be careful. The captain and his men will find out the road. “„I would have never thought that I would undertake such a journey on my old days - still as a companion of the king! “„Sleep now! Use the peace! Who knows, when we will have again opportunity to sleep. “

As the old wolfman had prophesied it, the night passed calmly and without incidents. On the next morning the group applied to the pass. „Keep your weapons ready “, instructed the king briefly before they rode in the mountains.

The road became ever steeper and rockier. Finally they were forced to descend off the horses. Now the captain collected his men, in order to secure the passage. The others remained with the horses and observed always watchful the environment.

The captain and his fellows approached carefully the first place. No human soul were to be seen an no noise was to be herad. With signs of his hand a soldier informed his companions. ARN and HADOR followed and secured.
