F/V Lulu
« on: August 26, 2010, 05:58:03 »
The fishing vessel (F/V) Lulu is the flagship of  Y Pentref‘s Fishing Fleet. Lady Captain Marguerite MEEKS-MONTROSE is her captain.
Today she has both her fishing booms out, as well as her sharking harpoon. Why she should have both types of fishing engaged at the same time is unknown.
To aft is Mr SMITH-VERTERS, one of Emma B Ryan’s paroled pirates- He is not her usual helmsman. Also on board is little Becka, the first child of Lady Captain and Lord Mayor Jerac MONTROSE.

Great work Andy. The more pictures I see of these little vessels the more I am convinced I should byu a couple because they fit perfectly in a medieval harbour IMO.

Yes, you should. Actually, make a list (written, mental psychic, or whatever) of all the types you think you might want, and get one to fit each. At least one for each… (You can even get the new ghost pirate version, if you’re willing to spend the time to build your own sails…)

OK, so I also meant to leave pics showing details of the modifications necessary to build her… So here they are.

This first pic shows the notch I cut to allow the booms to sit more flush with the hull. You can’t tell from this pic, but I also had to deepen the clip the boom sits in.
To keep the booms from dragging aft, I spliced a line (two eyes, currently one eye to each just hangs over the forward bits but eventually I’m going to re-splice them through the forward holes).

In this pic, you see a modified decks and hatch covers from Set 429Ø (Large Pirate Ship, part number 3Ø 51 52ØØ), specifically the small deck section the aft cannon mounts into. Because it wouldn’t have fit otherwise, I cut it down about 3Ø%, then drilled 4 holes through it. Although I superglued it in place, I also used staples (actually re-bent paperclips) to secure it to the deck. This is where the harpoon is connected. You can also see a smidge of the notching for the starboard boom, and port boom solidly in it’s notch.

Finally the harpoon gun modifications. (Relax, it’s for sharking, not whaling.)

I took a ballista bow (part number 3Ø 26 573Ø) and stand (part number 3Ø 26 574Ø), and cut the stand feet short. Into this I put a System X Connector (part number 3Ø 22 825Ø). You may not be able to tell from the picture, but I drilled a ¹/16th inch hole across, then put a section of the aforementioned paperclip bent into a cotter pin (ironically, I was watching Fraggle Rock at that exact moment ) to ensure it didn’t come out.

I tied one end of a piece of twine to a yellow ballista bolt (part number 3Ø 29 489Ø) and the other to the ballista itself for a cable (I’m going to improve this later on).
