I ma glad yuo posted that picture i was wondering about something on this set a couple of days ago. This is a great set i must admit, i remember buying it when i was a student , i was so impressed by the bespoke items, the detailing and most important the ambiance it created , it is indeed a great set from the ( according to me ) so called ' Playmobil Golden Era'..... a classic set with great klickies and items !!!! I will put the one i have into Krull's forrest and not in the cisty as i was originally thinking... it will be in a dense part of the pine forrest , isolated and this magician and his helper ( and another klicky that will be revealed ) will be on the ' good ' side of magic .....

I agree about the 90s being the Golden Era of Playmobil.

It baffles me why that time period was so good and now is really just a pale reflection.

Same here. The originallity, the enthusiasm of the sets in the early/mid 90s was something elese i reckon, i remember when the 3666 was released and all of the medieval sets, they were soooo popular something like the lego star wars when they were released etc. The themes expanded so well then and the sets were a full portfolio for each theme making them complete and not so weird  detached theme with a few sets like the ghost pirates ( not that i dont like them). but one needs to look at the 95-98 catalogues and see the quality and diversity of sets. These new spies mambo jumbo and too much system x and parts to build a totally non realistic house, the new castles that look like chinese toys bought from an open fair for 29.99 oh well sorry but the 90s was indeed the golden era for playmobil. all started going wrong with the new ( then ) space sets with all the wires and connectors so so sooooooo inferior to the superb playmospace theme of the 80s !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Playmobil wil never be the same again and i wonder with oil prices that high these days and since its highly unlikely to see oil price going down what the effect on playmobil will be , softer , ever lesser quality toys probably or the total end of the playmobil line. thank god for ebay i say  :)

I too worry with oil prices so high.

They have two choices.

1) Raise prices (which will lower their sales even more and only lead to layoffs and a reduced line and take Playmobil away from those who need it the most -children!)

2) reduce the amount of plastic used (which is probably why they went to sys x and are now going to very thin pieces that clip together (ala lighthouse and dragon knights)

I guess a third option is to use a different material.

Guess what came today!  (Yes, Sunday - it came by bus so it came faster than post.)

I was going to post photos of it - but it's late (1:27am) - or is it early ...

Anyway, tomorrow.

You can tell it was collector kept - there's not even any dust on anything and no discolouration (which I'm beginning to think is due to exposure to UV rays).

You said it Sir Wolf, Playmobil lines were never the same after hte late 90s, the experimentation started, clearly market priorities changed and so did our playmobil. Thnak god for ebay and the older sets i say !!!!

Pictures speak a thousand words.

Here are some pictures (excuse the quality, it was just with my ipod touch at night in my garage so there was no flash and the lighting was not the best).

You can see there are some custom touches to some of the figures (I just grabbed a few out of the bin with figures that seemed kind of neat and called out).

Since this was a collection of an elderly lady who passed away the touches she put on them will not be removed.  She obviously did this out of love and care and will be kept for posterity reasons and respect.

She painted some of the hinges on the doors (a touch I always thought Playmobil should have done).  She also painted the spigots on the barrels (I found three large barrels on the tops of the piles last night - I know it's not much now they are rereleased (which is a good thing) but I've never had them before).

The olde female figure was interestingly customised with material to make a dress and a cape.

Initially looking at the pieces showed she also glued parts in place - structures as well as people in place.  Apparently she had a family room in her house set up with the sets - a room sized diorama.  It would be wonderful to see a picture of it, but I have not been able to see one.

Everything is in mint condition (minus the glue and some mild customization).

Little hints and clues are showing themselves in the pieces as to what is present.  2nd pic from bottom shows a siege ladder which would indicate 3123 or 3888.  Since there is no seige tower that I saw it's probably 3888.
