BTW Damo, the 3386 is altogether a magnificent set!!! A fire truck and a small FD Headquarters....and load of extras....have not seen this set before!!! Maybe you can scan the instructions for Heather to put in playmoDB....

I could only afford the fire truck from that set as this was expencive enough and the whole set to have shipped from Germany would have cost an absolute bomb so I got it from a seller who splits up the sets, and besides I didn't really want the rest of the set as it would just really be duplicates of what I have already got.

Great history lesson on Playmobil fire ladder trucks, Damo! I haven't got any of the 3386 set fire ladder trucks myself, but I would like to get several some day! Do you have any 3879 Tower Ladders ?

Very interesting Damo, thank you! Although not my theme of interest it is always interesting to see the historical progression of sets and to see how the design and production changes over time.

I am rather confused - my 3182 could be a 3879 as it is as it is, but I am not really sure. Can anyone tell what mine is from the pictures of was it just the accessories etc that are different

Looking at the number plate might help - Mine is infact a 3879

The obvious differences are in the firefighters' uniforms and the printing on the fire engine plus the flashing light unit is of a different design.  The 3879 unit uses two AA sizes batteries and is taller than it is wide.  The 3182 light unit uses two AAA batteries and is wider than it is tall.  However, they are interchangeable between the two fire engines.

I concur, from looking at the inventories. Besides the klickies and the flashing light unit, they are almost identical, right down to the accessories (a couple have been replaced with identical items with updated part-numbers). However, most obviously, they have different numbers on the body of the truck - 3879 is number 52, while 3182 is number 112; the latter came with stickers of a variety of numbers to paste over. The bumper with the license plate is not numbered on either set of instructions, by the way.
