Some medieval customs

Excellent customs Andrew!

My favorites are the crossbowmen with two color sleeves, followed by the company of Billmen & Halbadiers with striped jupons, but it's hard not to like the fantasy Dragon Knights, they look very mean with their red & black getup.

The fantasy heraldry kind of grows on you, or maybe wears you down after a while. You must have ordered all those shields on DS I'm guessing? They are almost orc-like.

Andrew, your beautiful custom groups are exactly the way I would have painted my Warhammer armies! (That is, if I had any.) ... 

Each group is unique and the individual figures within each group are all different, but there is no question at all to which group they belong. Brilliant, Andrew! Absolutely, brilliant ... 

I have always been a big fan of this particular green dragon heraldic device that Playmobil used. To me, it looks like a sea serpent dragon! I'm very curious about your swallow tail green dragon flag.

Is it a custom? Or, is it included in a set that I have somehow overlooked?

Very good point Richard, and I would like to compliment Andrew on that too. 

It isn't easy to individualise figures and still retain a group identity. I try to do it when I can too, as I like to have each figure be a potential central character in a story, even if they never actually get their own story. Not so easy with 200+ Roman legionaries though!

To answer your question, yes the flag is original Playmobil.

The flag I would have liked to have used is this one: 30 62 7092 - Flag, medium, square, but when I tried to order it a year or two ago, it was discontinued.

The one I actually have is this one: 30 62 4212 - Flag with clips, two points

Yes, I ordered the shields from DS, shortly after the inventory for the Dragonland set they're in was put up on PlaymoDB. I've got several more still waiting to be issued to further adherents of that faction, but I need various other parts (arms and legs, mostly) to finish those figures.

I agree, the emblem does seem inspired by swords-and-sorcery-type bad guys. In a word: orcs.

In my own mind, all my customs are very much from a world parallel to Western Europe in the 13th-15th centuries. Perhaps these Dragonland guys are from a place further afield, less explored, moving off the edges of the map... Because you know what they write in the blank areas at the edges of maps:

'Here be dragons'

Many thanks for all your kind and appreciative comments. It is nice to know that folks like what I've done 

As a couple of you have noted, yes, I try as much as I can to make sure that all the figures belonging to a given group (or affinity, to use the term applied in later medieval England) are readily identifiable as belonging to that group, but not identical. Indeed, I try to have as much variety as possible. Sometimes easier said than done, but I like a challenge  ! And again, very nice to hear that people like this -- thanks!

At least with a Roman legion, there was meant to be uniformity, so having all one's legionaries looking pretty much the same isn't so much of a problem. Of course, how uniform all the troops in a legion actually were in practice is another matter...

They must be fairly difficult to do...
but you do such a great job, it looks effortless!
