It's interesting that both the Swedish and Finnish sites are in English, but the new 2009-2010 online Catalogs are in Swedish and in Finnish.

Wonder why Playmobil didn't have the Sweden site in Swedish and the Finland site in Finnish?

Thanks Pingo , that actually is quite useful in regards to them having the new sets and in English as Richard mentioned .

Until 1809, Finland was part of Sweden and was dual language, with Swedish being the minority language.  Nowadays, both countries have elements of the population who speak one or other or both languages.

Thanks, Gordon ...

But, that still doesn't explain why both the Swedish and Finnish Playmobil sites are in English ... ???

All the best,
Richard

Quite.

I'm going to guess that all Swedish and Finnish people can read and speak English, probably better than most English people, and neither Swedish nor Finnish are widely used languages on the internet.

The catalogue is different as it is a representation of an actual real-world catalogue.

Seems like a pretty good guess, Martin ...  :yup:

I was thinking along the same lines as Martin for the answer to that one.  English (of one sort or another) is the language of the internet.

Gordon, it would appear that you, Martin and I may have really lucked out with "English" as our native tongue, since we all speak (more or less) the same language ... ;)

A friend of mine from Sweden explained this to me using this logic.  Education is free all the way through university and in many fields of study there are no Swedish or Finnish textbooks, so they standardized on English textbooks.  So, you need to have a good grasp of English to make it through college and they start teaching English in lower grade levels.

I don't know if this is true, but it seems plausible.
