First THW custom
« on: October 12, 2008, 19:56:58 »
In my review of the 4082 THW mega set (http://www.playmofriends.com/forum/index.php?topic=2610.0) I said a danger of the set was the number of customs it suggested to me.  Here's a mockup of the first of them (there are three others already planned or under way around this theme) - a canvas tilt for the truck and trailer. Currently, it's just made of stiff dark blue paper and the measurements need amending to take account of projections within the load area.  Also, it need to be a bit taller, probably equal to the height of the top of the blue light on the truck cab.

Addition:  the real thing.

Here's the trailer now.  The material used is too flexible and so doesn'r stay straight against the sides of the vehicle so in the next version I'll try either stiffer paper or card or  make a frame and then clad this in paper.  Plastic is another possiblity but that would mean cutting and glueing and painting.

What an interesting vehicle! Nice conversion, very straight forward yet effective and the color looks good too. I wonder if the real ones can expand and contract their soft-tops(accordian-like) or if they have a rigid inner frame? Thank you Playmofire for sharing (and your review of the set was excellent).

I don't know what kind of paper you used, Playmofire, but it definitly looks good!
If the paper's to weak to stand, I'd go for a internal rigging. But that's me  ;)

Anyhow - these are great addistions to your force, Playmofire!

A possible plastic that might work, if you can get a colour match, might be the cover of an A4 plastic ringbinder.

Not sure what dimensions you'd need, but some ringbinders (like the one on my desk here) would give you a 12"x10" flat plain sheet to cut your template from. Scoring and folding might then give the necessary shape & strength without the need for internal bracing.

Thanks, Bogro.  It's a stiff artist's paper.  The advantage of an internal frame would be a more rigid structure when not on the truck or trailer for storage.

Thanks Martin, that's a useful suggestion.  I shall follow it up after a spot of measuring.

Excellent customs, Playmofire. :yup:
Sometimes I use a clear, flat paint to
make paper a little more rigid...just a thought.

Best regards,
Jimbo

Hm, cool idea. I wonder if "awning" (is this the correct term?) of the 3233 police car could be customized for this purpose (using two, separating the ends to enlarge in length) ...  ???

... and then sprayed in THW-blue.
