German Men's Buttons and buttonholes
« on: April 18, 2008, 14:24:09 »
Can someone enlighten me?

In recent several sets (e.g. 4902 Special Policeman, 4299 Wedding Photographer and the little boy) the male figures have buttons on the left and button holes on the right, of their jackets or waistcoats.

In the UK men have the buttons on the right and holes on the left, and ladies the opposite.

Is this a Playmobil peculiarity, or do German men really button up their jackets the girls' way?

Well spotted. :lens: I hadn't noticed any difference on the prints.

Amost on topic :-[ ....
I bought a pair of jeans recently which button the opposite way to all the other ones I have ever bought. These ones have the button on the right side, hole on the left (as viewed from the front). It's funny how such a small difference can become irritating when you're used to having it the other way around. 8} I checked my husband's jeans because I was curious as to whether my new pair had a male fastening, but it was actually the opposite to his as well. It seems that most clothing manufacturers don't make a distinction between the sexes when choosing which side to place the buttons on jeans. :P

Hello, Martin ...

In answer to your following question (and, I am somewhat of a costume expert), the Germans have always had both their buttons, as well as their button holes, on the same side.

Apparently this makes it much easier to button up with one hand whilst holding a beer stein in the other!

Can someone enlighten me?

... do German men really button up their jackets the girls' way?

Sorry, Martin ... I just couldn't help myself ...
(The devil made me do it.) ...  >:D

The same side as what?

Aha.  :)

I confess I never have seen buttons right next to button holes like that! I guess this is off some special uniform and serves a specialist purpose?

It would seem then, that the buttons on the left of men's jackets and coats is a mistake by Playmobil?

It is not universal - the karate guy, and smoe older Police figures I have, just as examples, have the left side of their clothing folded over the right as normal.
