UK Playmobil TV Ads, last May
« on: November 04, 2007, 10:59:47 »
My wife just showed me a TV ad for Playmobil - the take-along dolls house for girls, and the submarine & fire boat for boys.

I was quite suprised, as I didn't know Playmobil actively advertised in the UK.

The ad was broadcast on 25th May around 8:55am on ITV2 during a Children's ITV period of cartoons (specifically Sonic the Hedgehog).

This precedes the recent batch of product recalls from Mattel due to lead-based paints and loose magnets, which started in August. http://service.mattel.com/us/recall.asp

We haven't noticed any since - does anyone else know if Playmobil are advertising on TV, especiallt in the lead-up to Christmas, and with Chinese-manufactured toys looking a poor investment?

Now, Martin, you say 8:55am, but was it 8:55:33 or 8:55:57?  I've been getting conflicting reports.  0) 0)

and with Chinese-manufactured toys looking a poor investment?

The Chinese toy thing might be being blown out of proportion.  The problem with the magnets coming out in children's mouth was a design-concept flaw that Mattel admits to, and the Chinese manufacturers were simply following Mattel's blueprints.  But, of course, the lead paint contamination was a Chinese problem.

The American congress is sparring with China right now over trade imbalance, and the media jumps on any opportunity to make China look even more demonic.  We want to raise costs for China to stem the loss of manufacturing overseas.  So, I am a little skeptical of too much demonizing.  It's starting to remind me of our political campaigns against the Japanese in the 1980s (example: Styx's song: "Mr Roboto", which mimed the furor).

On the other hand, having just returned from China, I can attest that the typical Chinese toy made for domestic use is very low quality.

But, on the subject of playmobil adverts, the Playmobil USA website in each theme has an "Advertised" checkbox that lets you filter by what Playmobils have appeared on TV.  To my knowledge, PM doesn't run ads in the USA, so I think that is a holdover from its European site?

Whoops, I misunderstood you.  Your point was the Playmobil ought to be doing as much as it can to benefit from the current China scare.

I'm a little surprised that Playmobil does next to nothing to promote itself in the states.  Playmobil is mass released in Target stores, but still manages its American product line like a specialty toy that upper-end shoppers learn about via word of mouth at the boutique toy store across from Dilliards.

We don't have any TV channels worth watching at my house, but my mum, who is attached to her telly by an umbilical cord, would have told me if PM was running commercials.

There are quite a few Playmobil ads on TV, the best time is early morning on Channel 5(uk only) when the childrens programmes are on. They are mostly for the modern themes but I have seen Viking and Pirate ones in the past. :)

Well I wasn't really suggesting Playmobil should trade off Mattel's discomfort, though I'm sure they will benefit. I just didn't know they advertised at all.

Since I got back into Playmobil in August, several local shops I would hope to see Playmobil in don't stock it. Woolworth's seemed to be clearing it off their shelves to make more room for Mega-Blocks, a local department store called Beales has shut down taking its toy department with it (where I first encountered the Roams theme), and TK Maxx only stock odd sets that they seem to pick up in bulk unsold from other companies. ARGOS (a catalogue store) don't stock Playmobil - it's conspicuous by its absense.

This leaves me with three choices apart from the interweb. A 5 mile cycle to Toys'R'Us in Hayes, a bus ride to Kingston (which has proven a much better place to shop for Playmobil with four different stores carrying it), or a journey into Central London for a gander round Hamleys and breakig into a mild sweat at their prices, followed by a trip to John Lewis. Now I've found John Lewis in Kingston, there's no benefit in going to the Oxford Street store.

In Ealing (West London where I live), we now have NO actual toystore apart from the Early Learning Centre. And they wonder why people go shopping elsewhere? It's because unless you want to shop for clothes or mobile phones Ealing has nothing to offer.

Oh Tim, I can't see any "advertised" checkboxes on the UK site, even for the sets I saw advertised. There is a new bit on the right saying "commercial", but it's not clear what it's for - it doesn't change for the sets I saw on TV.

The ads were voiceovers, so they're probably made for German TV and a fresh soundtrack added.

Ah, we probably don't see Ch5 in the early morning. Sonic is on ITV2, and my wife records those - yet she's never noticed a Playmobil ad before.

Hi Martin I should have said "Commercial" instead of advertised.  But, like you, I can't figure out what it is for.

When I resumed Playmobil in June 2006, I saw similar to what you reported: stores taking it off their shelves (like Toys R Us here).  I was afraid the line was going out of business.

UK prices still amaze me.  It seems you guys ought to have the same prices as Europe.

I have just received my Playmobil newsletter and it has a link to several Advertisements for the Christmas period and you should be able to find them on Playmobil UK.

The Pirate advert is a bit quick and simple though.  :(

Gasp! But we're NOT part of Europe!  ;D

Of course we don't have the Euro, so maybe we're paying for our priviledge.

I'm fairly sure that Playmobil does advertise on TV throughout the year in the UK, but the ads almost always air in between kids programs. So, unless you have children, you're not that likely to see the ads.

In the run up to Christmas, the campaign is stepped up and the promo ads increase, just as they do for all the other leading toy companies. Saturday morning seems to be a very popular time for them.

I saw an ad for the Airport and Pirate themes yesterday on kids channel Citv around lunchtime (1.30ish). It was pretty cool - made me want to go out and buy more Playmo. :yup: ;D

Yeah, I wonder about that.  When Europe went Euro, I read a lot of criticism that stores were sneaking in markups, or changing, say, a 30 Frank pricetag to 30 Euros even though the conversion should have been 26 Euro.

But, ye gods, a bloke can drive from Zirndorf to London.  He has to cross the Atlantic to reach us.  And we're still cheaper than the UK!
