Spanish pikeman wearing a ruff
« on: April 05, 2023, 14:39:26 »
Hello,

Does anyone else have a picture of Playmobil as their mobile (cell) phone lock screen? :)

Please see below for a 17th century Spanish pikeman wearing a ruff.

From Wikipedia,

'A ruff is an item of clothing worn in Western, Central, and Northern Europe and Spanish America from the mid-16th century to the mid-17th century.

The ruff, which was worn by men, women and children, evolved from the small fabric ruffle at the neck of the shirt or chemise. Ruffs served as changeable pieces of cloth that could themselves be laundered separately while keeping the wearer's doublet or gown from becoming soiled at the neckline.'

Best wishes,
Neil

Thank you very much Klickteryx, I took this shot while my Tercio was set up.

There are a number of interesting elements,

The centre positioned soldier is wearing the common metallic-grey Morion helmet (Playmobil part reference: 30281080), a white ruff (I talked about those in my earlier forum post), tan coloured men's breeches that fit to his knee, and white hose (or stockings) that cover the lower half of his legs.

The soldier to the left of the picture is wearing a much rarer dark metal Morion helmet (Playmobil part reference: 30296830 - playmodb says this helmet is black but actually it's dark metal) that only appears in Playmobil set 4805, Three-Headed Sea Serpent. This soldier is also wearing a dark metal breastplate (Playmobil part reference: 30606710). This breastplate came from set 4177 but it also appears in 5 other sets.

I've loved the shape of the Morion helmets ever since watching "The Flashing Blade" TV series every summer holidays in the 1970's here in the UK! :-)

The soldier to the right, with the red uniform, is wearing a bandolier with powder charges in wooden flasks called "the 12 Apostles" - I talked about these in my Tercio forum post the other day.

Best wishes,
Neil

A very neat idea.

A very cool, classic image. Should be a proper Spanish theme - can you imagine!  :paddy:

Thank you Macruran, a Spanish theme would be nice :)

Or what about a Thirty Years' War theme?

Think bigger! a Hundred Years' War theme?

Think of all the national armies of that period that Playmobil could produce and collectors could build into armies :)

The uniforms, the advancement of military technology during the war, the battles, the sieges, the thrones, the kings!

The history that could be illustrated by Playmobil sets!

The possibilities are almost too painful to imagine, knowing that they will almost certainly never happen  :'( :'( :'( :sorrow: :sorrow: :sorrow: :hissyfit: :hissyfit: :hissyfit: :wall: :wall: :wall:

They also have a barbarian theme but only in German-speaking countries.
