mattel toys recall
« on: August 14, 2007, 19:29:19 »
All over the news today in the UK is that close to 8 million Mattel toys have been recalled. As they contain small magnets that become loose and Lead paint and are all from the China factories. But of course no mention of Playmobil items. So the moral of the story is that if you wish to keep your children safe buy them Playmobil. - Craig

That thought went through my mind when I heard the news.

Less thank a month ago they had a recall on red tomas the train cars and buildings . The red paint they were using was leaded . It is so cheep of the chines to still use known hazardous ingredients and then to use them on children's toys . anything to save a penny.

maybe, instead of china, playmobil coud consider portugal fot their next factory.
we have a very develloped plastic mold industry (going bankrupt because of china and bad management).
we have a lot of skilled labour with plasticas being fired and some of us have a good a knowledge of the periodic table (Pb, number 82).
we have one of the biggest playmobil pirate's collector in the world (yes, i am talking about me). :-[
a portuguese on-line store and ds service would be the next step, just before offering me the job to design all the new pirate's releases (my design experience belonhgs more to 1:1 scale buildings but at least i have some).
portugal is the right spot for geobra.
please come.

Playmobil is the only type of toy my daughter and my nephew are getting from me for birthdays and Christmas until things get better for the toy industry here in the U.S.

You know now that you mention it like that . :!: I have been trying to talk the grand parents into only buying Playmo toys for B-days and Christmas for years now . No matter what i tell them they always buy the cheep junk and lots  of it . :omg: I have been telling them that in our small house most of it ends up in the land fill. What a shame for all those hard working Chines children . All that work so it can be dumped .  :-[  So this year i think i am going to use the old Toy Recall Strategy.  Every time they start talking to us about holidays i will remind my wife about Code T.R.S.  :confetti: and i am going to shape them up this time.  :yippee: :whip:

I was talking to the owner of our local toyshop last week and she was saying that it's not just been Mattel recalling toys, although they are the firm that hit the headlines.  Two or three other companies have recalled toys when they realised that they had been produced at the same factories as the Mattel ones.  It may be that the toys concerned did not have high quantities of lead in the paint and the recalls were just a precaution (in which case, good for the companies concerned), but it also raises the question - are there other firms using those factories who are just keeping quiet and hoping that they aren't affected.

As for grandparents, sadly they often seem to think that more is better.  My wife's mother is like this and used to buy her grandchildren (they were my wife's sister's children; we don't have any) enormous quantities of cheap stuff, and often, the kids played more with the wrapping and boxes than what was inside!

Very interesting article Sylia, thanks for the link.

It feels like there's a "stack 'em high & sell 'em cheap" factor going on in Childrens' Toys.

Most toy stores have their shelves stacked with the latest movie merchandising or cartoon tie-in, and they want to squeeze the maximum profit out of the family's purse. This is easiest done by minimising production costs (i.e. using cheap Chinese labor).

Playmobil is a rare exception to the merchandising rule - even Lego have their movie themes. Maybe this is what's kept Geobra smaller than the other companies - or maybe it's the fact that children could still be playing happily with their parents figures.
