It seems to me that with just a touch of that famous German engineering aptitude Playmo could have pioneered an expanded modular Steck system that would have allowed construction of entire medieval cities with great variation from just a small number of pieces. It would have appealled more to the modeller than the constructor, as PM does today.

L**o is a pure construction toy imho, the figures and accessories are absolute ugly as hell.
Playmobil could/should combine the best of everything: play + imagination + construction.
Though steck is awesome, it might be less useful to the company for expansion to the modern themes as it would require many more moulds to create parts for modern buildings as well.
So I can imagine why they came up with System-X at the time; many parts that can be used for all kind of shaped constructions/houses and in classic as well as modern themes. But the large amount of red and yellow connectors one has to insert to build something absorbs a lot of time, most probably too much time for most kids/parents.
They should have come up with an improved System-X-v2 instead of choosing the path of those silly half-buildings they include in sets these days...

True that. Just set any two comparable figures beside one another and it's immediately apparent. A L*go Roman legionary against a Playmo legionary: the winner is clear as day.

And actually to me it's not just the Lego figures and accessories. That's why I still believe Playmobil has potential as a construction toy as well as a toy to play with. The Eifel Tower and Versailles and all those fantastic constructions achieved with Playmobil prove it: it can work as a construction toy and look a thousand times better.
As long as it's relatively easy to put together. And PAINLESS for the fingertips.

as for the discussion on construction :


Steck :

is an amazing system , afther 40 years of expierience building I still find new possibilities

those who created this system were genious

pos : It is simple, you have not many different parts to build with, easy to find second hand

neg : you need a lot , it is heavy therefore expensive



System X 1ste gen :

Also an amazing system with lots of possibilities wich are still to explore

When you digg well on the internet you find amazing constructions with Sys-X

Pos : you have many many different parts , a lot is to explore with that System , Amazing buildings and constructions

Neg : you need a lot ,it is also heavy so expensive, hard to find , you need Direct service if you want to build


System X 2nd gen :

Impossible to build with

Pos : it has oft charming parts for system x first gen

Neg : as said, Impossible to build or to expand


Bottom line is: Playmobil will never return to the old system because it is too expensive.


compare an old set in weight and contains with a current set and contains
compare the prices they cost and once costed

Playmobil is a company that is there to make profit and feed +/- 3600 people

The good old days, when furniture was made of massive wood, Playmo of massive plastic and jeans were thicker then toiletpaper 
Someone needs to build a timemachine (weither out of Steck or System-X)...
