Smithsonian Collection
« on: January 03, 2015, 00:24:38 »
I live near Washington DC, so I take my son to the Smithsonian museums frequently. I thought it would be great if they sold a one or two different "special" sized figures at each museum, so kids could actually beg their parents to hit up each gift shop to complete the collection.

Maybe they include a special sticker, or checklist to make them Smithsonian exclusive (then they could also extend to other museums such as the New York Nat. History museum)

Something like

Air & Space Museum - Astronaut
National Museum of the American Indian - Native American Chief
Natural History Museum - Caveman  (and maybe a paleontologist or oceanographer?)
National Museum of American History - Civil War dudes
National Art Gallery - Painter with easel

Then there's:
Capitol Building - Revolutionary War soldier/ George Washington
White House - Abraham Lincoln
Archives / Mint - Patriot

We also have the International Spy Museum (awesome, but not part of the Smithsonian institution) that would be a great place for one of their spy figures.  and the Crime & Punishment museum that could sell a gangster or police officer, and the Newseum that could sell a reporter/photographer.

Last year Air & Space sold a bunch of Future World playsets (including the big ones) but I didn't see any when I was there earlier this week. I think doing unique packaging or something for the museums would be great, and increase their "educational" appeal.

That's an excellent idea. I've often thought they should put more thought into making sets to sell at museum gift shops in general. Gotta say that the Smithsonian museum is one of my favorite places on earth. Especially the natural history museum. My husband hasn't been there, and I'd love to go and spend a week just seeing everything.

FYI they are doing massive renovations right now. The Dinosaur hall at Natural History is closed for the next 4 years or so, everything else is open (Including the updated Caveman exhibit which is awesome and completely interactive!).

You may recall American History was closed (the whole thing!) for about 2 years, but it is open now and looking fresh.

They have just begun re-doing Air & Space. They're going to do it in chunks, starting with the main hall. Unfortunately they're planning to take down and completely renovate the Lunar Landing exhibit. This is my "Happy place"  It really is my favorite space and I don't think I could live with it being closed for a few years (last I heard was 5, but they'll do it in chunks). Breaks my heart.
It's been the same ever since they opened it in the late 70s. Those fonts

But we can only hope the new look will be exciting!

Museums in general seem like a great place to sell unlicensed educational toys. I would love to see more done in the art world. They could even be generic in nature, modern artist, sculptur carver, metal artists, each a small set of its own, special plus type of sets.

We have not been to the smithsonian but your idea could very well force our hand to visit.
If you hear the sound of the bell which will tell you that Grigori has been killed, if it was your relations who have wrought my death, then no one in the family will remain alive. They will be killed by the Russian people. :prays:

Sounds like a good idea to increase publicity on both sides and knowing kids I'm sure they'd love the collectability side of it even if there's no check list then just inserting a sheet like with the Mystery figures to show them what other figures are available to collect maybe even include some facts on the sheet or the packaging  :)

What a great idea.  The Smithsonian holiday gift catalogue does have a children's gift section that could feature a special set as well, perhaps combining several of the special editions you suggested.  They might be open to suggestion if you included the link to the recent Rijks museum special.  Can you imagine the response if they brought back the Statue of Liberty, Uncle Sam, and Playmobil already has those molds somewhere in their warehouse.

Interesting, that's good to know. I'll be sure to hold off until it is re-opened. I wouldn't want to miss any part of the natural history museum!

I like the idea of more museum sets. It has a lot of appeal for kids and adults, and collectors, like me, who are trying to limit the themes we collect will still buy them because they're not a whole new theme per say...  ;)

some years ago i tried to convince fundação de aljubarrota - http://www.fundacao-aljubarrota.pt/?idc=45 - to ask playmobil for a quote on the production of some exclusive figures.
but things were abandoned.
maybe i will try again.
