5496 - 'Christmas At Home' Advent Calendar
« on: October 02, 2014, 06:51:22 »
I bought the 5496 'Christmas At Home' Advent Calendar - and I don't even celebrate Christmas!  I just wanted the contents, but as I'd never had a Playmobil Advent Calendar before, I thought I'd set up the background and then open the doors in order, as a child would.  And, actually, that was great fun, so I'm posting this review as a commentary on each day's door opening - though, of course, they were really all opened one after another on the same afternoon.

But to start before that:

The box sleeve shows the order of the surprises; what one gets on which day, but that sleeve can be removed before the child sees it.

They will still see a picture of much of what is to come, but won't know which day they will receive which item.

A warning: take care if you are going to cut the tapes holding the cardboard sleeve around the actual calendar.  When I was cutting one of them, I caught my scissors in a piece of plastic, and I was quite shocked to find how close I'd come to cutting the edge of the background scenery.

The background scenery is nice (I like the voile curtains at the windows).  The rectangular hole to the right is to hold an item later.

The first item on 1 December is a girl klicky, followed by kittens (and accessories) on 2 December.  This is a great start, because if a child didn't want to set up the Christmas scene, she or he still has toys that can be played with, or added to their existing Playmobil scenarios.

4, 5, and 6 December bring a cool pink chair, an Advent Wreath, and Dad.  I really like Dad: in his jacket and tie he looks ready for his work, and yet he is not 'perfectly' smart like a businessman in an advert.  He's much more Real than that.

7 December = a coffee table - not very exciting to me, as I already have several of these, but if a child doesn't have one already, then I'm sure they'd like it.  And on 8 December comes the wonderful tray of cookies.  Stars, moons, trees, hearts, and gingerbread people.  I really like these, and in my Playmobil Land they will certainly be served all year round.

Dad gets a white chair on 9 December.

10 December brings two cushions and two wine glasses.  Each cushion comes in two halves - two white halves and two pink halves - and the instructions show how the two white halves are put together, and the two pink halves are put together, resulting in one white and one pink cushion.  But I paired up the white halves with the pink halves so that, depending how I display them, I can have two white cushions, two pink cushions, or one white and one pink.

I think the two wine glasses are intended for the two adults in the set, but as there is only one adult available at this point, the wine has turned into a fruit drink, and the child is sharing it with Dad.

11 December and the first gift arrives.  The gift box comes with a handbag, but in the end there are far more gifts or potential gifts than there are gift boxes, so eventually there is freedom to choose which items will be gifts (and which are just part of the scene), and which gift boxes they will go in.  The gift boxes are superb, sturdy plastic and reusable, and as they are not Christmas-themed, they can be used as gift boxes for any occasion.

A puppy and bowl arrived on 12 December, and then for 13 December, I pulled out this:

That's a very poor photo, because actually those parts are grey, but whatever the colour - I found them very confusing, and looked at the box sleeve for a hint about what these things might be - ski poles perhaps?

It turned out that 13 December's surprise is packed in two bags, and I'd taken out only one of them.  All became clear when I retrieved the second bag.  The 'ski poles' are part of a very nice candlestick arrangement.

14 December yields another gift box, plus a watch, a camera, and a tank-like toy.  The toy came in two parts, and I needed to refer to the instructions to put it together; its shape/design wasn't something I recognised.  If I'd bought this Advent Calendar for a child, I'd hope that two weeks in, I still had the instructions kept safely somewhere!

A nice side table with a drawer arrives on 15 December.

And on 16 December, there's a wooden-looking Nativity Scene, plus some holiday gift cards.  The gift cards need stickers on, so I had to put them aside for now - I can't do stickers.

I can't imagine that I'll have much use for a Nativity Scene, but it does look nice.  The star is a bit difficult though.  The 'stick' to fix it through the hole in the stable roof feels quite flimsy and vulnerable.  I tried twice to insert the star straight, but dare not try again, in case I broke it.  I think, also, that it will have to be stored in an individual tray compartment, not thrown in with 'decorative items', or else it will surely get broken.

17 December = a jewellery box with a padded lining sticker, plus a little jewel to attach to the gold necklace.  I imagine that it will look good when it is put together.

At last! Another child arrives on 18 December. A cool little boy with a hood.

He didn't have a chair to sit on, but he seems quite comfortable in the cat basket.

Only six more days to go - but quite a few more photos, and I'll get back with those a bit later.

Thanks for the details...

The guy looks real nice for a hanged man (ties... gah) - a real nice klicky (I think it's that gorgeous kid hair!)

Oh, those are new cookies? I don't think we have those. Must get them.

Aren't those unicorn horns? Looks a bit morbid if you see it that way.

I actually like that nativity thing, even if I dislike the whole idea :-[  But it's so cute. The thing is, right now I don't know if we have one or not.

The gift boxes are very nice too..

And you solved one mystery for me - I could never place that necklace! Need to try and get some, I think they make for very nice variety.

Again, thank you for the detailed pics - looking forward to the rest!

I decided not to get this set because there's too much pink in it, but I do like the cookies, the white chair and white cushions (genious, putting them together like that!).
The nativity scene is brown, which is a lot nicer than the golden coloured one I have from a previous Christmas Eve set.

Lovely review, by the way  ;D

  I had to get out a unicorn and check!

They are similar, but not quite identical.  Thankfully!

To continue:

19 December: another gift box, a laptop, and two books ... and more stickers.  I thought at first that the (slightly crumpled, but they'll be ok) stickers were a choice of screens for the laptop, but referring the instructions, I saw that the top two are covers for the books.  Very nice: I like that.

20 December: Aargh! Another sticker!  There's a framed area to attach it to, and a little support stand.

Looking at the box sleeve picture, the support stand appears to fix neatly into that rectangular hole in the background scenery wall.

So I inserted the support stand, but those sticking-out sides of it made it impossible to balance the blue frame upon it.

I tried putting the support stand in the other way, but that just looked silly.

I couldn't think of any other way to do it, so I gave up for the time being.  Actually, it turned out to be really easy to fix properly in place, but I'll come back to that later.  I wanted to see what was behind the door for 21 December.  It was a fourth gift box, and a yellow doll.

22 December = another candle arrangement.  I like all these candles (and the ribbons, and the little pink plantpot), but I do wonder if a child might be a bit bored of candles by now.  Including one spare candle which was included with the Advent Wreath, this is the 9th candle of the set!

23 December and Mother turns up in time for Christmas.  She's a very nice klicky.

And finally, the 'big surprise' for Christmas Eve: the battery operated light-up Christmas tree.  With decorative balls and ribbons to attach.  And, if I'd bought this set for a child who needed help with assembly, then I would at this point wish that I had insisted that the Advent Calendar doors were opened after breakfast and not at 6 o'clock in the morning.

That little tree took me about 20 minutes to put together!  OK, I don't see very well, and I'm a bit clumsy too, so maybe others would do much better - but I found it so hilariously difficult that I ended up in helpless giggles.  That was mid-afternoon, though.  At 6 o'clock in the morning, I might well react differently!

There are tiny holes underneath the branches into which to insert the decorative balls.  And there is not much room between the lower branches for adult fingers.  I started at this most difficult area.

Having filled that, and the layer beneath, I realised that there were less decorative balls than there were holes.  Obviously they are not meant to be put into every hole, but arranged in a spaced-out pleasing pattern.

So I took the little balls out and started again, squeezing my fingers between the branches, and stabbing the balls hopefully in the general direction of the holes.  I kind of gave up on the 'pleasing pattern' idea, and was just glad if I got one in anywhere.

And then came the ribbons for on top of the branches.  Much simpler - but nearly every time I pushed on a ribbon, a decorative ball fell out.  On goes a ribbon .... Ping! Out goes a ball, bouncing off across the table.  A snoozing cat woke up with interest.  Dogs gathered.  I practiced my tiny bouncing ball catching skills.

I got it all together in the end.

Shame about that hole in the wall, though, so I tried again with the frame-that-should-be-their-Advent-Calendar.  Oh, it's so simple to fix to the scenery wall.

It's not meant to be inserted from the front of the scenery (which is what I had previously done), it's meant to be inserted from the back of it.  Then it hangs and holds the frame perfectly.

As I can't imagine I'll be putting a Christmas Tree in a house, I wondered if it could be put in a pot, to go into a shop or a street scene.  And yes, it can - using a suitable pot.

I'm not sure that the table can be otherwise used, though; it would take a lot of 'stuff' to hide up the switch and connection part.

The Advent Wreath is adaptable.  Without its stand, it can be placed on a table.

The middle decoration can also be removed, making it into a Birthday Wreath.

Without the candles: a decorative wreath, for any time of year.

The candles can be added anywhere there is a 'spike' for flowers or birds.

There are lots of decorative possibilities.

All in all, it's a very nice set; I'm very pleased with it.

Thanks for the great review. It's an interesting set. I will probably end up with it, I have most of the Advent Calendars. I like some of the accessories a lot. It's interesting they made a mini advent calendar, that's anew idea for them. Most of the other holiday items are variations on things already seen before. The new color scheme is nice though.

That was a very nice review, Raven. I like the way you took us through the sequence of opening the boxes in the same order as a child would (unless they cheated!). We have quite a few of the PM advent calendars and we get one out each year. Our children love marking the run-up to Christmas by opening a box a day and building up a Christmas or winter scene. I think Geobra were the first toy manufacturer to do this, but several others (especially Lego) now do this.
This set has relatively little Christian content, so anyone who celebrates Christmas as a secular event would probably have little trouble with it. Mind you, that pink colour is a different matter! And I personally like it better than some of the advent calendar sets composed of knights, dragons, etc.
At that moment the ship suddenly stopped rocking and swaying, the engine pitch settled down to a gentle hum. 'Hey Ford.' said Zaphod, 'that sounds good. Have you worked out the controls on this boat?' 'No,' said Ford, 'I just stopped fiddling with them.' (With thanks to Douglas Adams)

I had thought that I wanted this set for some of the accessories... Turns out that after your review I REALLY WANT this set for the accessories! Thanks for the great pictures!
I'm glad that I'm not the only one :)
