Another Rainy Day
« on: May 30, 2014, 16:29:39 »
Hey folks we've had some wet weather recently so I've had to work in our Greenhosues at the Botanics and if I'm going to spend my day in there I may as well have some good music and some company even if the little men are a bit slow at weeding

Of course Scott taking after me is always keen to explore new places and one of our latest recruits with the blue tshirt and ginger hair was also itching to have a go and show Scott how good he is at climbing

Meanwhile Mike named after the band Mike and The Mechanics since he looks sort of like a handyman was as usual more interesting in checking my MP3 player was working well than in all the plants

Dave and Simon however, took quite an interest in the Euphorbias which I propagted from cuttings a few years ago, although I'm not sure I'd put my hands quite that close to the spikes :o.

I was quite excited later because I saw one of the cacti cuttings I'd proagated less than 2 years ago had a nice big flower bud on it so I decided it was a good time to plant it out in our Pavillions (big greenhouses open to the public) along with some other nice plants so that people could actually see it seeing as these little greenhouses are used for propagating and sheltering more tender plants till they can be planted out somewhere in the gardens.

When I checked on it on Monday I found that I'd planted it the wrong way round so that the flower was facing into the bed where people can't really see it  :-[   so I quickly replanted it the right way round, Scott and Dave thought it looked much better.

For anyone who is interested it's called Epipyllum Oxypetallum (Dutchman's Pipe) although as usual how I managed to identify it is a mystery, cacti are a rather mind boggling group to identify 8} plus the spikes ...

And finally there was another rather nice plant in flower, it looks rather like a bananna plant but, I rather suspect bannana's don't flower like that particularly seeing as the bunches of banannas are normally hanging quite high up in the plant

The flowers are very impressive.

Great pictures and narrative, Scott, both about the Playmobil and the plants.  That flower is superb and you must be very pleased with the outcome of your work there.

I like the way you've customised the beard on either David or Simon simply by putting it on the "wrong" way round.

Thanks glad you like the photos and the flowers, in hindsight I should probably have put Daves gloves on first  :-[

Thanks it really is a great place to work I've still got all the spring photos I've never got round to uploading and the photos of my Pirates which I got about halfway through taking earlier this week (awaiting less wet weather to finish them off)

Wonderful photos. The flowers are great, I love visiting glass houses.

Thanks I've been to some quite impressive ones in my time notably the ones at the National Botanical Gardens in Wales were very good, ours are alright but, then again I would say that since I work there you do tend to see all the problems and things which could be improved, they're certainly popular with the public.

Thanks I'm glad you like my photos and narrative, it's a beautiful caciti I saw its parent flower as well so I feel very lucky to spot it in flower twice since it's meant not to stay in flower very long, I am also very pleased particularly since cacti notoriously take many years to flower and this one was apparently propagated in autumn 2012 so less than 2 years old  :o I put it down to their monthly feed of cacti feed.

Dave is the one with the bald head and beard (Dave and Simon and some of the others are based around people I work with at BTCV) please do explain what you mean about the beard being on the wrong way round  :eh?: I'm sorry but, I'm a bit confused  :-[ although I've got to admit it was much easier taking photos of him when he had his winter scarf on because it stopped his beard slipping down now there are times when I'm reviewing my photos and realised it's slipped down below his mouth giving him a bit of an odd expression.

Apologies, Scott, my error.  Looking more closely it is on the right way round.  At first I thought it was a different style of beard fitted with the lower side facing upwards.   :-[ :-[

That's quite alright it just got me a bit confused, he does have a rather unusual face with his customised bald head his beard is rather more visible  :)
