the new Nativity and Wise Men sets

Go take a look at the 2014 catalog on playmobil.de. Or check the Christmas section of the Online-Shop.

...

O.K., back? HOW ABOUT THOSE NATIVITY AND MAGI SETS?

These are PM's third versions of both.

When it comes to the figures, the second versions were the best, though the third finally gets the baby right and Mary's veil from the first and third are superior to the red one from the second. I mean, Mary in red, it doesn't really sit right. But Mary's blue and white togs from the second are on point. New Mary's togs aren't too bad but she's back in makeup, which is just wrong.

First version Joseph makes a better Jesus, third version Joseph - don't like his haircut or robe as much as second.

I like the new shepherd but I will be going with the old shepherd plus the boy from the micronativity set, there has to be an old shepherd and a boy. I do like the new shepherd's stick.

The third version kings just feel wrong to me. Their robe patterns seem off. And one of them in a pschent? IMPOSSIBLE. The Magi came FROM THE EAST; Egypt is southwest of Judea.

The stable is finally solid though. Why it wasn't always so I'll never understand. This is one set that will potentially be brought out annually for years, so why not make it all solid from the get go?

I do like the palm tree.

Summary: I'll get the new Nativity and mix and match to produce a set that I put out. The new Magi? Not sure yet. Maybe get them as regents of satrapies for my Roman Empirette.

She's expecting important visitors, give the woman a break   :P

Do you really prefer the newest baby Jesus? It looks so weird.

I do love the new solid stable with the wooden boards in front of the window. Lots of possibilities for it in a wide range of themes!

It looks to me like there is an actual star in the new one too, rather than just a backdrop. Does anyone else think so? I agree this baby Jesus is better. Looks more like a newborn.

In the end, we will conserve only what we love. We will love only what we understand. We will understand only what we are taught.

I do and I already use that baby from the micronativity in the 2nd version nativity set when I put it out at Christmas. It's swaddled, as it should be. The giant baby is too big. If I used that one I'd have to have Mary passed out on the floor.

YES

It looks to me like there is an actual star in the new one too, rather than just a backdrop. Does anyone else think so?

The picture is a little ambiguous but I am confident that the star is plastic, as it should always have been. The only thing missing is a tiny ledge for the angel to stand on!

Sadly, I think the star is just part of the printed cardboard background.  I do appreciate the "real" stable though - a big improvement!   :)

I have to disagree. Examine the picture closely: http://www.playmobil.de/on/demandware.store/Sites-DE-Site/de_DE/Product-Show?pid=5588&showSpareParts=false&cgid=Weihnachten#cgid=Weihnachten&start=7 - there doesn't seem to be any cardboard background, the star looks 3D, and there is almost certainly a clear plastic support for the star.

Fair point

Sadly, I think the star is just part of the printed cardboard background.

It looks like cardboard printing (on the photo's in the brochure), but actually the pictures from the International Toy Fair show that the star has a shadow. So it isn't painted on the backdrop, at least. :hmm:  Whether the seperate star is made of plastic or cardboard, is very difficult to see. I'd agree with bonnie and say it's plastic. It's pretty thick and has carvings in it.
