Yeah, I don't actually know for sure, but I would think a metal pot would have been very expensive. They probably would have used clay vessels.

Note that not the giant plastic star or the girl angel flying around is a problem, but the cooking pot is

If I remember my Sunday school lessons correclty it wasn't exactly that they were poor. All the inns were full because everyone had travelled there for the king's census. They could have carried a metal pot from their home or something, carried by the donkey.

I'm rooting for the metal pot, because I liked it in the second version of the set  :)

As Vince Noir said, it's all about context.

I'd accept a metal pot but a smaller one. That one's big enough to feed a troop of Magi.

In my set up, I've always given the pot to the shepherd. It never occurred to me that Mary and Joseph would haul what appears to a massive cast iron cauldron all the way there.

I've done the same because the Shepherd would be in a stationary place (and thus the large pot would be good for them.)  I don't see Mary and Joseph carrying such a large pot with them.
I'm glad that I'm not the only one :)

But would the shepherds be in a stationary place? Figure they're out in the fields in the evening, pasturing their flock. Otherwise why are the animals with them? They wouldn't have dragged a big pot out. They'd have a small cold meal, bread and olives, maybe some cheese.

Agree

Since the set is just a bunch of great parts to me, I'd rather have the big caldron too.. not that I don't have them already  :-[, but they're so nice..   :)

He's bringing the animals back to the stables, where he already has a cauldron set up so he can get straight to making dinner once he gets there.  ;)

But the stable where Joseph and Mary were staying was not the shepherds' stable! They travelled to find it after being told about it by angels.

Angels and "Magic" stars are cool-no questions asked, but a big cookpot isn't?
