Painting klickie chainmail helmet
« on: July 01, 2013, 01:07:33 »
I want to paint one of the chainmail helmets to get the texture of it, but in black.  I want to get black hair in that texture for an ancient Persian scene I want to make.   Can anyone suggest or give me warnings about what would or would not work?

Thanks!
Ben

By helmet do you mean the chain mail coif (hair replacement piece) that an helmet would go on to show chainmail under an helmet?

If you want it in black you will have to paint the thing in black (that will be the low shadow areas) and dry-brush (google the technique if you're not familiar with it) a slightly lighter colour for highlights to create depth and show texture.

Then seal it with a top coat because hair pieces are polyethylene so the are flexible and do not break. This type of plastic also ensures paint will not adhere well. A mixture of water and white glue over (it will dry clear) may work the way you need it to.

Again, google painting polyethylene plastic / soft-plastic toy soldiers (as they are made of this type of plastic).

Hope this helps.

Try spraying it with a coat of plastic primer first to help adhesion.  Try it out first on a spare in case it damages the plastic, but I don't think it will.

I too am not sure if this is what you meant.
(for your info, there's a black version of this chainmail hairpiece already)

if you dont play with it...they'll hold forever...when you fit it on, press the top and try not to press the sides

Wesley: I do mean the the chain mail coif; and Cheng, that appears to be the piece.  Do you know which figure(s) come with that style hair piece in black?

Thank you.

You really mean black, not the darkmetal (anthracite) colour?
I bought most Surpise Figures but never saw chainmail-hair in black...  ???
One of the few that I didn't buy and has a helmet that masks the hairpiece was the black alien (Darth Vader-lookalike) Figure from series 2.... So maybe that one?

not too interested in Fi?ures so I searched all 5 series and even series 4 a few times for a 'darth vader' and came up with nothing...Hadoque, you might be right....perhaps I thought it was black all along....I noticed it back then because they were alway silver/light grey

Aliens don't fit the "normal" hairpieces, theirs is different, unfortunately...

I got all the figures and don't recall that in black..

in that case, sorry can't help you further bhellman75! but I'm sure I've seen the darker chainmail hairpiece somewhere not too long ago.
