maybe WM (WesleyMyers) knows what the samurai call these black arm/hand protectors....not much use against any katana's razor sharp blades ;)

Yes, I do (just read this post now).  They are kote (pronounced "kohtay").  Hand/forearm/wrist guard.  One of the key cuts in Kendo is kote (to cut the opponents hand off at the wrist).

If they lose their hand it is not easy to fight back.  It also leaves the person alive.  Whether that is a good thing or not could be debated through Western (Christian) ideals and/vs/or Budo ideals.

They look very good on the figure!

Kendo ones cover the hand in a mitten-like way to protect the fingers in practice.

Just reread the post and I see you mention about them not being good.  They would have been made out of steel plates so I would think they would be good defence or they would have changed them to be effective or gotten rid of them.

We focus on kote in Kendo because it is one of the hardest areas to actually cut (like the other target areas in Kendo). If you can cut the hardest areas easily then the easy to cut areas are no challenge.

thanks WM! I find this all very interesting bt I did scringe when thinking of those wrist cuts. Jaseon period archers seem to wear some sort of kote too (western archers wear wrist guards that dont extend over the back of their palms right?) I suppose it also helps during winter

I cringe at thinking about the doh cut (across the belly from attacker's from attackers left to right) with an unarmoured opponent.

Those archery wrist guards are so the bow string does not cut your forearm up as you release the arrow. It can sting pretty good even with them on.

According to Age Of Empires :-[ , archers wrist guards protect the wrist from the arrow fletching when shooting, so it doesn't tear the wrist open...
