Big sets, Big price, Big value
« on: December 13, 2012, 17:27:48 »
I had recently purchased some playmo sets at Costco. Costco is a very shrewed tightly run company that brings great values to the market. When ever I hear Costco is stocking playmobil my ears perk up and I have to seriously consider the purchase. There were two sets that hit the pre-Christmas market that were decent deals but to me they were more of a warehouse cleaning set than anything else. The value was not to my standards as well so I passed on them both.

Then a week ago a member brought it to our attention that Costco had acquired some super sets, super....now we are talking. Indeed they were super, some of the bigest boxes we now have. At first the price was $100 and even that was a decent deal but it got better. Apparently they felt the need to cut $30 off and put them up for $70 w/free shipping, how could I resist, well I didn't. Both sets are now happily piled into our MISB horded pile awaiting the day they get opened.

What I wanted to know from other members is how you view these big sets. If Geobra would make more super sets would you be inclined to purchase such sets? To me they are a great value if you priced out the individual set that they are made up from the SRP price is easily twice the super price. If Geobra would make a super set for say Medieval where it came with a stecks castle, soldiers, a Tudor house, horse drawn carts and a half dozen interesting klickies would you be interested in purchasing it even if it had a big price. It may be a big price but its a huge value again if you were to price out the individual elements.

I also purchased the FAO super set that not only had the mini 5300 but also the green car, a wagon, klickies and the park fence for $70.

I know I would rather spend more on individual sets but each set had more to it. If I could buy an entire theme in one box that had a great price I would be all over it.

Which sets were these?

I was just at costco yesterday and they had a forest set and the 5207 AC(?) travel insurance set.

They are on the pallet in store for $94.99 and are marked as assortment 987891 "transport set and forest set".

Sorry, I didn't get the forest box number.

*edit - it's 5004*

I'll definitely save up for super sets within my theme for myself. However, I wouldn't buy them as gifts; I'm not going to spend $50+ on someone else's kid.

I don't know what their turnover rate is like nowadays, but I do think more expensive sets need to be available for a longer period of time than small sets because they aren't an impulse buy (well, for most of us).

Well at present being only an unemployed volunteer I woudln't be able to afford it, I've only seen one superset I think and I don't knwo what the prices you're suggesting would translate to in £ but, I'm generallly quite tight and won't spend large amounts of money in one go so it would probably have to be something which really appealed to me and I wantred enough to justify buying it, not to say that it wouldn't be good value for money necessarily  :).

for a medieval set it depends on the factions the soldiers belong to. I gues some random knights can be usefull for individual stories, but for soldiers I'd prefer to add to the factions I already have.

Greatest thing would be a medieval civilian set with maybe a house, some trees, a cart and lots of villagers with equipment.

I would love to get a Napoleonic set (or else a tricorne period set) with about 100 soldiers, plenty of cannons and horses...our how about a trimaster frigate including crew? I would be all in...
I just hate getting large sets with recycled parts I can get by buying smaller sets...

Cheers,

Yes I too would love a set like that. One thing I noticed with a costco set is that if you priced out the set individually it would break down in the following ...I am not even going to go through pricing out the huge forest set, there was so much in there it was shockingly wonderful

Plane- $30
Car- $20
Towtruck -$30
Emergency car-$20
total= $100 and this just happened to be the SRP

but then the sale and it went to $70
so the plane became $20, car $15, tow $20, emergency $15

Now if I could buy 100 soldiers that ended up costing $2 each and a tudor house that was $25 I would be interested in it and perhaps a few times

Unless it's a house, I'm usually reluctant to buy large (= expensive) sets. Even if I end up paying the same amount for several smaller boxes together. I guess it's psychological.

But the good thing about huge sets is that if there's a discount, it really pays off  :)
I got the enormous farm set (with three big vehicles, a house, furniture, animals...) at 50% off. That was a fine day  :cloud9:
