Heroes and Villains of history.
« on: May 08, 2012, 13:30:56 »
As part of an educational project, I'd suggest Geobra to release a selection of specials or special plus sets that help with teaching children history.

As such each package does not only come with a clicky and accesoires, but also a little book that tells the story of the person with the help of pictures or through a comic, featuring the clicky version thats included in the package.  A historical depiction could be shown on the back of the book, from a painting, drawing, photograph or statue.

The persons should make for interesting clickies, and they should of course not be too controversial. The clicky also needs to appeal to children.
So no Hitler clickies.

Heres my suggestions for such a small theme, wouldnt need to be all of them, just throwing some possibilities out there:

-Socrates.
-Alexander the great.
-Hannibal.
-Sun Tsu.
-Julius Caesar.
-George Washington.
-Joan of Arc.
-Queen Elisabeth I.
-Frederick the Great.
-Albert Einstein.
-El Cid.
-Richard Lionheart.
-Salladin.
-Charlemange.
-Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
-Napoleon Bonaparte.
-Geronimo.
-Atilla the Hun.
-Ghengis Kahn.
-Queen Isabella of Spain.
-Maurice of Orange-Nassau.
-General Custer.
-General Lee.
-Marie Antoinette.
-Catherine the Great.

It would very much be possible to continue the theme for many years if it proves succesfull. Geobra could work together with schools to help education further.
And of course it would inspire children to replay history with playmobil, using these figures and the playmobil they have.

This is definitely a cool idea, Rhalius, but I think it probably would still be too controversial to release. :( Maybe we could add some "legends of history" that might have existed too, to make the list more appealing to some. But it's up to you, as it's your idea!

My list would have to be:

Militantly-Involved:
- Joan of Arc
- Charles Martel
- Richard the Linoheart
- Saladin
- El Cid
- Charlemagne
- Atilla
- Ghengis Kahn
- William Wallace
- Robert Bruce
- Erik the Red
- Edward, the Black Prince
- Llywelyn ap Gruffydd
- Henry Tudor

Non-Militantly-Involved:
- Geoffrey Chaucer
- William Shakespeare

Legends:
- Robin Hood (another one!)
- Sheriff of Nottingham
- Beowulf
- Tristan and Isolde
- King Arthur and his Knights
- Parzival

Sorry, I can only be of help to the Medieval, close-to-Medieval, or earlier times!

 I would love to see history done by Geobra. The part that bugs me is this "controversial" part. I am sure the people on the other end of these characters you listed would find them quite questionable. Everyone in history has skeletons in their closets so I do not see how one would choose. If you only want to choose people on "your" side it does not do anything for education, its lopsided and becomes propaganda  8} If you do history then represent it in its entirety, not edited to suit your needs. All or nothing  ;)
If you hear the sound of the bell which will tell you that Grigori has been killed, if it was your relations who have wrought my death, then no one in the family will remain alive. They will be killed by the Russian people. :prays:

I agree with you, Ras.  History needs to be studied not only for what we learn from it but also because it at least partly explains why the world is as it is now.  If there are categories of people or events that cannot be studied, then history is being rewritten.

any character can be studied of course, but especially considering Geobra being a german company, a Hitler clicky would be too controversial. Vlad the Impaler might also be a bit too gruesome.

These little comics that come with the clicky would just give basic information, pretty much to let the children know who the person was and what they where known for. It wouldnt be a deep biography since that would be boring to most children. The story of the person could be told in maybe ten pictures with a bit of text.

Mostly the intention of this history series would be to encourage children to ask their parents or teachers about these persons, and the older children could be inspired to look it up themselves. Just spark their interest a bit.

Whats controversial can definatly be a matter of opinion and where you live, that is why its important that these little stories stay with the facts and treat the historic figure with respect. Teach the children a bit about their mistakes as well.  Napoleon did bad things, but also did some good things for France. Children could learn a little about both.

Overall, these stories should be kept a bit light hearted just like playmobil. Don't forget that friendly clickies would be portraying it in the pictures. It would pretty much provide the most basic information and a fun fact. (Like Napoleon not being short but of average height.)

Great suggestions by the way, legends such as robin hood could be part of a different series though.  :)

And I just thought of pirates. There could be some real or legendary pirates in there too. ;)

And as for the controversy, I don't think that anyone would stop them from making these so long as they avoided the most terrible of historical times like you mentioned. And if the price was right, I'm sure they would sell a lot of these (maybe even in museum gift shops?). The only thing I can think of right now that would hurt sales is that you might not have a use for several Robin Hoods or Charlemagnes as opposed to several random knights or something. Though I certainly would!

heh well it wouldnt be a figure, you would know what you get so I dont think it would hurt sales.  :)

I dont think they really think most kids would buy the same thing twice, the specials never seem to be really designed for that either aside from some soldiers. Can't buy the same pirate twice either unless you plan to take one apart.

Good call on the famous pirates though, would go great with the pirate theme to have Blackbeard there. Some of the clickies could still be used multible times, like any other special.

The randomness of those really is sort of uncool. If they were only themed like you suggested before or if this idea were made into an Historical theme, then I wouldn't mind just grabbing some and taking the gamble. But feeling them to find the good ones so I don't get stuck with an Uncle Sam or something is a bit annoying. Some of the figures are very nice though, so I suppose it's still alright! :)

And yes, some of them definitely could still be used multiple times. Copies of the same pirates and knights en masse can be fine. ;)
