The reason some of the OIC, & driver/operators are shown in their vehicles, is because when the stations are being displayed on the shelves, there isn't room for them to stand in the front of the vehicle .

I find no difficulty in believing that.

can always put the drivers on top of the roof, but it would be rather embarassing if your firemen get burned when sunbathing.

I remember one time at a rescue team competition when it was 100 degrees outside. We were required to be in full turn out gear while waiting for our turn to compete. After waiting an hour, my fire boots were filled at the bottom with sweat. When it was my teams turn, I climbed up into the tree that we were to perform our procedure, got to the dummy, rescued it, but passed out with heat exhaustion. I then became a patient in real life. It scared the judges so badly that the next day teams were allowed to wait their turn without turnout gear on, & dress into it when their turn came.

Well, it sounds like you made an impression on the judges. Maybe not quite the way you had hoped, but....

But I did. My team was required to extricate me from 25 feet up in the tree, so we were judged for an actual rescue, but disqualified. They got me down, put me in a stokes basket, then some bystanders ripped open my turnout gear & jump suit, & poured ice water out of a big cooler on me . My temp was so high that I wasn't even sweating anymore, & breathing had become labored. My girlfriend told me all of this, because I didn't remember what happened.

  You were lucky to live through that. Apart from losing consciousness 25 feet off the ground, heat exhaustion is serious stuff. I have suffered from it once, though I never actually lost consciousness. What I remember was that I got to a point where I suddenly started to feel very cold and chilled even though I was standing in the sun and it was well over 100 degrees. That was when I knew I was in trouble.

Btw, couldn't throwing ice on you when your temperature was that high have stopped your heart?

Most of the time it would, but luckily instead it only put me into shock, & unconsiousness again. The paramedics that were there, freaked out when they saw what had happened. I puked alot during that time too. It wasn't a good day.

Yeah, I didn't think that was the thing to do when someone was in that situation. You have to bring the temperature down slowly. Well, slower than that anyway. They meant well, though.
