Playmobil France stopped supplying Supermarket
« on: February 07, 2012, 11:41:02 »
Something weird with Playmobil France. They did stop to provide their toys to Carrefour store,  because Carrefour did refuse to increase the price of the toys. This is a one-sided decision from Playmobil  ??? . It's too bad  :'(

Thats business for you and you have to read the fine print. If your provider wants to raise the price of one of the items you do to or you will in a way become competition to the very supplier that makes the item which is very much frowned upon.

It a easier to say and understand since I've worked retail for a long time.

I just spoke with a store owner in Tennessee (here in the USA) who just abruptly shut down his store. He had an extensive website, a large presence on Amazon.com, and a storefront, but due to the hard times he had to close shop abruptly without much notice. He mentioned Playmobil doesn't allow online-only shops (there must be a storefront of some sort in place). It's really sad since they've been in business since 1988.

Competition law doesn't allow a supplier to stop selling to a retailer just because they are selling goods at cut price except in certain circumstances.  I suspect Carrefour has been selling at less than they buy for from Playmobil and that would allow Playmobil to stop supplying them.

It also has to do with franchise agreements. Small stores don't have the muscle to do what big chain stores do. If Playmobil sees small stores competing against their on line sales, it may be considered conflict of interest.

No cut prices of playmobil sets are allowed by retailers in the greek market. if they do cut the prices, playmobil does immediately cease providing them with merchandise. Only shops that are closing down, and wont conduct business with playmobil again, have the liberty to sell the remaining merchandise they have at a cheaper price.

No, Carrefour doesn't want to increase the price of the Playmobil toys, even the price in this store is rather expensive. So because of that Playmobil company stopped supplying Carrefour.

Well, Carrefour makes PM look like they're the bad guys here. Doesn't mean they're angels either. From what I read, Carrefour won't sell PM for the time being, which doesn't mean PM refuses to sell them stock. Who knows Carrefour didn't ask for a bigger scope and are now putting the pressure on PM??? As Chris said, you betterread the small print.
