So, you're thinking of come over, cheng?  We have a castle at Scarborough too!  There's been some sort of fortification there from at least Roman times, a signal station, and maybe earlier.  And I'm a direct descendant of one of the last, maybe the last, person to be responsible for the castle at times of hostilities.

reminds me of that line, "are you going to scarborough fair? parsely, sage...."
and dear Gordon, I shall need your help to find something for my wife to do other than visiting castles and war relics  :P
....btw does the last person responsible for a castle during hostilities leave it last too? (like a captain of a sinking ship) ..you're probably blessed with a lucky lineage   ;D)

No, I'm afraid the castle isn't mine

The site of Scarborough has been used for military purposes since at least Roman times when there was a signalling station there.  During the English Civil War, it was held by the Royalists for King Charles I and was besieged by the Parliamentary army who reduced it to its present state.  In the First World War it was used by the army and in the Second World War it was used by the RAF as part of their measures against air attacks on the UK.  That's where my ancestor (my late father) comes in.  He was one of the early members of the RAF's 80 Wing (the "Beambenders") and for some time was in charge of an area in the north east which included Scarborough castle.  (I intend to get his war record to check the exact dates.)  Of course, if I mention that I'm a direct descendant of one of the last people to be in charge of Scarborough castle in war time, few people think of the 1935-1945 war and assume it was the English Civil War of 1642-51!  "Say, that man over there is a direct descendant of the English King Charles the First!"

yes indeed Gordon!
(though I started as a WWII military collector, my years of playmobiling-conditioning has shut off almost all connections/interest in WW1 or 2  :P )
