4670 Crusader Special - new style sword
« on: April 24, 2010, 14:24:14 »
I recently got a 4670 Crusader (oddly called King's Knight by Playmobil), purely to get a 15% off voucher at my local Learning Palace Store, so I didn't open him until yesterday when I wanted a St.George figure.

I discovered that his sword is the new style without the curved-back guard, that has been spotted in other recent sets including Dragon World sets. It's a small change, but does make the sword fit better in the figure has a wrist item like a cuff or glove.

The box artwork hasn't changed.

Its the 2010 style for all playmobil swords of that design...It is better as Martin points out, as it makes it easier to move on the klicky's hand...I 've met it in all the new sets i bought!

Thanks for the information, Martin  I bought one of these Specials when they first came out and it had the older style sword.  I haven't bought much Playmobil lately, so the only sets I've received these new swords in have been the red knight eggs.  I prefer these new swords to the older ones, as they're more realistic.  I wonder if the old style swords will go the way of the dodo?

Hi,

Yes, I noticed the same in examples of the 'crusaders' pair blister pack I acquired recently: they have the 'new' sword, but the package artwork still shows the old one with the downward-curving quillons.

I get the same impression as others: Playmobil is now using this version as the standard, and I suspect the older version will be phased out. It does make the sword far easier for a Klicky with cuffs or armour to hold.

I wonder, though: what made them decide to change? Complaints from customers, or someone in the design team finally noticing?

Cheers,

AndrewL

Justin and Andrew, I totally agree, the old style is now a thing of the past. It confers no advantage over the new style, and uses a teensy bit more plastic, so there's no reason for Playmobil to continue producing it.

I had noticed it recently, in taking a look in the to be launched medieval items. I didn't pay that much attention at the pictures of the drachenland collection ... Thought these swords were new in this upcoming collection.
