Basically it is a sign that PM is looking to develop "media properties". They have seen the runaway success of some of the L*go themes (Ninjago was apparently a smash hit) and they want a piece of that sweet multimedia multiplatform licensing dosh. So they will just keep throwing stuff at the wall until something sticks. Asian dragons? No? How about Fire and Ice Fighters? No? etc.
To the degree that it will increase playmopresence in the world and especially in the US, I agree with Tiermann. But I question how much of the Playmobil we love will remain. This is a step away from the careful creation of tasteful medieval or Victorian or Eskimo miniworlds. This is modern media marketting. And it doesn't appeal to me.
Birdie and I will sit in the refuseniks' corner and sulk.
