I think perhaps just 1, or if more then probably about 6 (5 soldiers and an officer).
Just because they look nice and also because the belgian Royal Guard wears such bearskin-hats, like in Great Britain.
Such hats were worn in the 19th century and later, so they fall outside the era I collect soldiers for (ca. AD 1492 - 1815).

The French were wearing bearskins during the Napoleonic wars (the Old Guard I think). Even if they don't work with pirates, I'll be getting as many as I can.

Yeah, I've seen people using them in diorama's but I wasn't sure weither or not it is historically correct. I should look it up, the Napoleonic Era is not my field of expertise...

If my recollections are correct (and as I get older they are less trustworthy) the English started wearing the bearskins because they managed to repulse the Old Guard at Waterloo. I think this was the first time an opposing force had accomplished this so the English coopted the hats to commemorate the occasion.

Here is a picture of a French Grenadier from 1813.

It would appear that the french did use bearskin hats.
