Well, be careful what you use. A lot of cleaning products are abbrasive.
I think a company called Haggerty makes products that are reasonably safe. The make products that just clean and reverse the oxidation proces.

To be honest, I'm not sure yet. I was thinking of painting them gloss black for some custom. But I could use other parts of armour for that.
