Does it actually fly? (Just curios, I really doubt it…)

Of course not. The envelope is much too small. Compare it to a hot air balloon and its basket. Or an zeppelin and its gondola.

I had no idea what steampunk is...I like the historical sci-fi aspect of it.

I loved this!  I wonder what the ballon is made out of?  It looks like vinyl...and is it sewn?
I really liked the googles, too, and how the maker mounted the compass on a hand sign.  I'm starting to look at my spare parts bin in an entirely different light!

My only (minor) change would be to give the captain a dog, not pirate.  I think that would fit the "steampunk" idea better.

From Wikipedia:

Steampunk is a sub-genre of science fiction and speculative fiction, that came into prominence during the 1980s and early 1990s. The term denotes fictional works set in an era or world where steam power is still widely used — usually the 19th century, and often Victorian era Britain — but with prominent elements of either science fiction or fantasy, often featuring futuristic technology as the people of this historical period would have envisioned it to look like, i.e. based on a Victorian perspective on fashion, culture, architectural style, art, etc. This technology may include fictional machines like those found in the works of H. G. Wells and Jules Verne, or real technological developments like the computer, but occurring at an earlier date.

I agree, a dog would have been cool.

Read `the difference engine`, if youre interested in steampunt. It´s a great book. I read it before I knew what steampunk was, by the way.

I think the balloon was originally a ball of some kind. Could it have been some sort of American footballball?
