Fire fighting theme SCBA air cylinder differences.
« on: March 01, 2009, 01:57:30 »
I'm sorry to report that the old style SCBA air cylinders with the rounded tops are discontinued from Playmobil! They are substituting them with the yellow scuba diver tanks with the flat tops which are longer, & need to be modified to make the rubber regulator hose able to stay attached to the grey harness bracket.

Bill,

Do you have a picture or part number for the old and new tanks, I will watch for them when miscellaneous items float by, otherwise they are just chaff.

Hi Gepetto!
These are the pictures showing the difference between the SCBA air cylinders.

The firefighter wearing the yellow air cylinder on the left is the original one that Playmobil has discontinued, that was offered for years in the firefighting theme sets since 1996. The one on the right is the current one that is being substituted for the discontinued one. When it is used in the grey frame, it is too long, & the rubber regulator air line keeps constantly falling out of the mounting hole on the right side of the light grey harness frame without gluing it in position because the rubber air line has too much strain on it due to the wrong length of the air cylinder from the factory.

This is a comparison showing the difference between the air cylinders again. The one in the far left again is the one we like that has been discontinued, the one in the middle is the new substitution, & the one on the far right is one that I modified to work out of desperation after receiving 40 of them when I ordered the old part number, but wasn't told by Playmobil DS that they had superseded the old one! I personally DO NOT like the new style air tank! It is the air tank that is used in the scuba diving theme, but doesn't work well with the firefighting theme, & looks totally out of place in my opinion! Gepetto if you can find me any of the old style like on the far left side, let me know, & I'd greatly appreciate it!

On this photograph three different airs sets

Entirely left own cylinder customised me self (twisted)
In the middle a new cylinder from the dive set
Whole Right the original cylinder

Make the smal block on grey frame narrower and the new dive cylinder is appropriate with the tap to on good site on girds himself
The difference is that a diver the cylinder carries with the clincher up Right And that a fire fighter carries the cylinder with the clincher to under
the imposable wy do direct
wonders take some time

Thank you Peter! I'll look into this modification, although I am disappointed that Playmobil would substitute something that is not what I consider up to their regular standards to be produced for this replacement purpose when it originally doesn't fit properly! I just tried this modification on an old harness frame, & found the draw back to modifying the grey frames to work with the new style air cylinders is the old style air tanks fit too loose in the modified grey harness frames, so they can not be interchanged once they are modified unless fit is not important.

Bill,

Maybe the new firefighters have a new system which does fit with the new cylinder.

In changing the cylinder, Playmobil are reflecting changed design in fire equipment in Germany.

Peter,

I see that you have put a cover on the left hand cylinder in your first photo.  Nice eye for detail and it looks good.
