need help for a dio
« on: December 18, 2008, 16:01:36 »
hi, its might be a stupid question but after 1 day of google and no real success i need to ask here. iam looking for a polysterene or polystyrodur sheet with the thickness of 140mm ( steck castle wand hight) as i plan to build a big building with an underground tunnel..

i cant find anything here in the uk.. someone offert me 1 sheet for like 20 quid but thats way to much ..

preferable i need   1m x 1m x 0.14 m

any help or pointing in a direction would be great

mike

With sizes like that I think you need to be looking at bulk suppliers rather than retail suppliers, e.g. hobby shops.  Bulk suppliers like to deal in bulk, so they may well have a minimum charge irrespective of the actual cost of what you want to buy if you're only buying one sheet.

If you do go the retail route, then you're almost certainly going to have to buy smaller sheets and then glue them.  Possibly, a retailer could get you the large size you want from their suppliers.

hi, thx for the answer, but the problem is.. when i go for a bulk seller he want 20 quid plus 10 quid postage for 1 sheet.. thats a  lot for it..

i have no problem to glue that stuff together, but i cant find a 140m thickness.. 150mm is to large, i use it atm but i have to make holes in it. its ok aslong i dont use any grass or other carpets to make it like a real diorama.. wouldnt look gud..

i only see on ebay like 25mm 50mm 100mm and 75mm.. so its not the right hights possible..

its a shame as u can buy it in germany in every dye shop!

have you tried a construction/bricolage store?  ???
polysterene is a common insulation material and it comes in 2 "ways":  :yup:
- expanded, usually white, made from millions of small little balls (4mm diam.) pressed together;
- extruded, looking like a very dense "mousse" but also very light.
thicknesses from 10 mm to 60 mm (in 5 mm intervals) are common and you have to glue them together with the right glue (otherwise they will melt).
both materials (specially the 2nd one) can be cut and sanded to whatever shape you desire.

That may have to be the answer.

Well, as they say, you pays your money and you takes your pick, and if you really want something then you're willing to pay for it.
