Pith helmets
« on: August 09, 2020, 15:14:49 »
Apologies if this has been discussed before, but I tried running a searching and nothing came up.

I often see, on Instagram, collectors making customs of Victorian-era redcoats wearing Zulu Dawn style pith helmets. I’m almost sure they were originally the helmet used on the English bobby and someone made casts of them, but does anyone have any idea on where to find them?

I tried Ebay but found nothing. Any kind soul can help?

Do you have a picture? Are they not the 'Bobby' hat painted?

No idea what Zulu Dawn style is, but I suppose you mean the older english "bobby"?

Cause the most recent one was a LOT shorter...

I’m hopeless at posting pics on this kind of forum (so much easier on FB  ;D ). Just ran a picture search, and it’s the hat from the ancient ancient set 1728.

1728/2 is the Playpeople British Bobby set. The helmet is also found in 1720/1 and 1758/1, which are also Playpeople sets released in the UK in the 1970s. These sets always fetch high prices on eBay.uk. The Bobby's helmet crops up occasionally on eBay.uk. either with the Bobby for about £12 or on its own for about £5. It would be an expensive and time-consuming option to buy Bobby helmets on eBay if you want more than 1 or 2.

I think 3D printing might be a good option for getting hold of these helmets in any number. Perhaps that is what the customisers on Instagram have done?

At that moment the ship suddenly stopped rocking and swaying, the engine pitch settled down to a gentle hum. 'Hey Ford.' said Zaphod, 'that sounds good. Have you worked out the controls on this boat?' 'No,' said Ford, 'I just stopped fiddling with them.' (With thanks to Douglas Adams)

Yes, I think so. I asked in the hope that someone knew of any sellers who have some, since a search on ebay yielded nothing.

The Man Who Would Be King and the Zulu films are among my favourites - I always loved that look.
