It's not happening at the zoo.
« on: April 21, 2013, 15:17:33 »
Okay, maybe this isn't news, but I was just at the St. Louis Zoo a few days ago and wandered into the gift shop. They had tons of neat zoo related toys for kids, and not one Playmobil set.   An awful lot of the items they had were very nice, and many were not cheap.  How Playmobil missed this market is beyound me.  Either they didn't market it strong enough to the zoo, or the zoo felt the wholesale price was not good enough for a mark-up, but whatever reason. PMB sure is missing a good location.
Btw, this zoo is often rated as one of the top 3, if not the top 1, in the US.

Yes, this has bugged me for a long time, too. It seems to me that theme should be strongly marketed to zoos. I have been to six or seven different zoos, and the only playmobil set I have ever seen was an animal clinic set in the enormous Audubon Zoo (New Orleans) gift shop, up on a top shelf where kids wouldn't even be able to see it. They're missing out on a real opportunity to introduce kids tp playmobil who may never have seen it before.

Not only that, but it seems that many museum gift shops would be good places for Playmobil. There's a museum in my city that has a permanent Egypt exhibit. You walk down this dimly lit tunnel and feel like you're entering a pyramid, and there is a eral mummy on display, and artifacts and all that. The gift shop there really should have carried the Egypt theme! I don't know why PM doesn't work harder on marketing to get their toys into the hands of new customers.

Is that a Paul Simon reference in the title?
On a related note, I would like to see a klicky with Garfunkel haircut.

Yes, and what about the 'mad scientist' or rocker?

Would probably be neat if Playmobil would release specific themes to gift shops and such that are related to it.

They could sell medieval stuff in giftshops at castles, House interiour sets at furniture stores, farm and garden sets at gardening centra, Pirates at museums that are about ships of the period and pirates, etc.

As far as pirates, they've had those at DisneyWorld in the gift shop at Pirates of the Caribean.  But, yeah, their marketing leaves very much to be desired.

That's cool to know they even have it there, though!
