Well, I've been working since Monday on setting up my zoo in my parents' dining room! It covers three 6-foot tables, and I didn't have room for the playground, petting zoo, water fowl lake, restaurant, and a few of my animal exhibits. But I'm still very pleased with how it has turned out. I'm just so excited to finally set it up! :woohoo: So I took LOTS of pics. ;D
I'll start with a couple of overview shots and the entryway:

HOORAY!! A ZOO... makes me want to set up mine again .... ;D
-
REALLY nice zoo! I love all the details, the zoo visitors, and how you set it up according to continents! Thanks for sharing the pics.
-
Oh my goodness! It is fantastic, bb!!!!! I love it so much  It is so creative, every exhibit is lovely, and the layout is so realistic!!! Thank you so much for finally setting it up and sharing the pics :confetti: :confetti: :confetti: :thanks: :thanks:
-
Thanks so much, everyone! I've had so much fun setting it up over the last five days, I'm almost sorry it's finished!
-
bb: Wow! You have a serious case of aminals as we call them in our house!
Very lovely shots of giraffes feeding, rosemary and other plants for the pandas, new "Nigerian Lady" in long orange dress from the train platform set, and African-American family in the stands!
That is an extremely cool gift shop....can we all go shopping there? Everything is so adorable!!!
Very cool setup of the zoo folks and African sets. Thanks for the photos, Pgal
-
Amazing! I had no idea that PM made so many different animals. This was very well thought out and showcased bb. Love the kids feeding the giraffes! Thanks so much for the wonderful photos.

AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I love it all!!! specially the waterfall with the bear. I had never seen that before.
The water efect is also great.... could we have a step by step how-to? ;D ;D
I guess putting all this away again must be hard work and almost painfull :(
-
Yeah, I wish I could leave it out forever. :( But then again, it would be very hard to dust! So it's just as well. :) Then I can have the fun of setting it up again. But it will take me forever to put everything away properly!
Thanks for the kind comments everyone!
-
Very nice indeed. But, a million camels in Australia? :o
-
WOW WOW WOW WOW WOW!!!! :yippee:
Its soooo beautiful bonnie!!! I love every little detail of it!! I did not realise you made so many souvenirs for your gif shop! And I've never noticed these new waterfalls (like the one where the rhino drinks water), they are so awesome, and your water effect is so awesome!! Brilliant use of the jungle temple !! So many great things happening in your zoo!! Thanks for setting and sharing with us!!!!
-
Looks really great Bonnie, and your custom souvineer items look great in the shop :)9
What did you use for the bamboo in the Panda enclosure?
Damo :)
-
I really love it as well. And I too love the use of the old temple.
How did you get all those animal prints on the items in the gift shop?
-
This is a beautiful zoo. The gift shop is my favourite, and all the different animals. Well done.
-
Thanks so much everybody!
@Damo: I really don't know exactly what that stuff is. My mom was throwing away some greenery a few years back and asked me if I could use any of it for playmobil. I spotted the potential of that stuff to look like bamboo and shaped it like that.
@Saskia: All of the prints are hand-drawn with a fine-tip permanent marker.
-
Amazing! I had no idea that PM made so many different animals.
(Me too ... There were one and another I really thought they hadn't done yet! ;D )
Hello @bonniebeth
I enjoyed it really much! Felt like I was visiting the Zoo! :)
(The shop is really awsome too ;) )
However :-[
~Shouldn't people be forbiden of feeding the animals? :hmm:
& ~In some places I felt there should be better protection between people & animals :o
It's a fantastic work, thanks for sharing! :) I guess most of us were longing for it for quite a while :yup:

They are only allowed to feed the giraffes, not the other animals, and they can only give them the lettuce leaves and specially formulated pelleted diet they buy there at the feeding station. ;) There's a keeper sitting there watching to make sure they don't feed them anything else. Giraffe-feeding stations are very common in zoos.
And yeah, I know.... some of the fences don't look like they'll hold the animals! Like the rhinos and jaguars. But most of the exhibits have invisible trenches that we can't see. :P
-
Impressive! (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/luwerner/gif/notworthy.gif)
It's awesome to see such a large setup like this (my boy will go bonkers when I show him these pics :woohoo:!), but since it's in your parents dinning room, I magine you won't keep it up too long, will you? That's a problem when you start to get your themes too big, an issue that has giving me a lot to think about :-\.
-
Wow! It's amazing.
I especially like the way you have incorporated lots of different sets like the temple and the conservatory and I love the cameras and binoculars all lined up in the gift shop.

-
@ Luciano: Thanks! Yeah, I can only keep it up for two weeks. But setting it up is the fun part, anyway! So I'll get to do it again differently next time. ;D And I have a really really organized system of storing things, so that makes setting it up a lot easier.
@ Verity: Thank you! I have a lot of fun looking at all different themes to spot things I can use in my zoo. 8-)
-
It's an amazing set-up, Bonnie, truly impressive. The polar bears caught my eye most.
-
Wow. That's GREAT!
Is that a brown elephant?
LOVED the vegetation near the pandas...
-
Is that a brown elephant?
Yes, it's painted to be a bronze statue. I need to find something to use for a pedestal for it.
-

Okay ... (Did you make it up, or have you actually seen it in a zoo? :P )
As for trenches (that's the word I was trying to remember), I guess they wouldn't be easy to do on a table diorama :-[

 Exactly.
Okay ... (Did you make it up, or have you actually seen it in a zoo? :P )
No seriously, it's becoming common at zoos around here. The beautiful beautiful beautiful BEAUTIFUL new african exhibit at the Dallas Zoo (seriously it's AWESOME) has a giraffe feeding station similar to this one where you can buy romaine lettuce leaves to feed the giraffes... for $4! :o And the Houston Zoo also has a giraffe feeding station. It's a nice way to interact with them up close. And they are such peaceful, gentle animals, with long eyelashes and beautiful long purple tongues that they wrap around the leaves. I've fed giraffes pellets out of my hand before, and their soft little lips tickle your hand. I love giraffes... :cloud9:
-

Ah, you scared me - I was thinking I'd have to start an ebay hunt for him! ;)

:) That's a good idea... And I suppose the stupid prices are at least this time put to good use. ;D
-
Yes, most zoos are non-profit, so the prices of that and gifts and concessions all goes towards better care for the animals. That makes it a little easier to put up with the ridiculous prices of food and drinks!
-
Well, I'm not much into Playmo's modern themes but I must say this is an impressive setup with lots of details!
-
Thank you, Gordon, Tahra, and Hadoque!
-
:o  :o
(got here through your PM ;))
I'm speechless! :omg: :wow:
Bonnie, I love it - I particularly liked the gift shop! and the ape enclosures!
the idea of the balcony where visitors can feed the giraffes is very cool :D I'd thought about that myself but it never ocurred to me to use the safari station, very clever and realistic :)9
bravo
-
Thanks, Luis! Glad you like it. ;D
I've added a video of the diorama here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E-0grq9acog
Sorry for the poor quality in some places, especially at the end. All that noise in the background is my finches.
-
that's a great video - what's with the indian/latino baby at 0:11? ;D
as for the noise - sounds like parrots! :D it adds realism to the scene :P
-
That baby came with my first playmobil set, http://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showinv.pl?setnum=3733
Yeah, I kind of thought the birds added to the ambience, too.
-
great video bb!!!!
if the noise bothers you there is a way to edit it and add some music or jungle noises ;D
what is finches btw?
-
Yeah, i did think about adding jungle sounds! But after I listened to the video, I decided the finches did the job. Finches are little birds.
-

Yeah, I kind of thought the birds added to the ambience, too.
That was your first set? That was a big start! My sister is the one who fell for those "new indians"... I went all over downtown Lisbon with someone who had a "resale card" at the time to hunt it. But I did hunt it. And all the others on our shopping list (oh, there was so many playmo in the stores back then... and it wasn't so easy to get, pre-net).
By now I think we have all of them...
-
That baby came with my first playmobil set, http://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showinv.pl?setnum=3733
yeah but why is he tied to some sort of black rope? ???
-
Oh, that! it's a baby harness! It's like a leash for a toddler to keep from getting separated in a crowd.
-
Really impressive , especially the attention to detail. Well done !!!!!!! :) :) :) :)
-
This is fantastic Bonnie
Only had time for a few quick looks so far, but I keep coming back to see more and notice something new each time.
Love the shop and all the exciting things in it, and the monkey in the hammock, and the giraffes feeding....
It has inspired me to change my idea of a wildlife park to a zoo - maybe for Kirkbean next year. ;)
Elaine (http://www.anchoredbygrace.com/smileys/mgqueen.gif)
-
oooh, that would be awesome, elaine! If there's ever an exhibition in my area of the world, I would just love to get to set up a zoo diorama.
-
Fantastic zoo Bonnie. Some very creative parts use in the enclosures. I really like using the Torii gate with a window.
Space is always a difficulty with themes like this. You've done beautifully with such a small space
-
Thanks so much, tim! ;D I must admit the Tori gate window is my favorite single thing in the whole zoo. I couldn't believe that window just happened to fit it perfectly!
-
YAY!!!
Such a great setup Bonnie, really need to take my time to go over the picture at least an additional 3 times. Will def show this to my wife tonight :-)
So many great ideas and original set ups.
-
Boy, we waited for this one for a long time! Excellent est ups and details, Bonnie!
Now, gis still owes us a zoo too, I reckon!
Best,
Arnaud
-
Thanks Gis and Arnaud! Yes, Gis we wanna see your zoo now!
-
Yes, Gis we wanna see your zoo now!
What can I say there is really no progress yet I think we're still stuck in the planning phase :(
Someday...
-
I was in the planning phase for about two years, so I understand. In some ways I'm still iin the planning phase... this was a temporary setup but one day I'd like to have a permanent place to set up all this and SOOOO much more. This was three tables, I could easily fill six, maybe eight!
-
Glad I didn't have to wait long to see (a part of) Bonniebeth's zoo <:>
It was a place of wonders in my mind - and the photo's don't dissapoint at all!!
I love every inch of it. Every animal has its own little habitat. Like the grizzly bear, his enclosure looks even better than the one in the real-life Antwerp zoo, which is saying something ;D
It all just looks.. gorgeous!!!  Simply beautiful, this zoo does deserve its own room ;)
(Every time I go into a toy store I have to restrain myself from buying my first zoo-set, because I know it will get out of hand, fast  )
-
Ouuh, Bonnie, I LOVE IT!
Back from my holidays, I am really busy, reading all the threads, I´ve missed.
But this is a wonderful one, really!
I always love to go to zoos, wherever I am, it´s always a charming experience.
And I am sure, I will visit you Zoo much more times! :D
All thumbs up!
Daniela
By the way, my favorite is the shop, too! I would love to buy one of the chairs. ;)
-
Just had yet another look :lens:
Love the bronze elephant...
and I think I'm there too :yippee: - is that my avatar stood under the thatched roof, looking at the gorillas? :)
Elaine (http://www.anchoredbygrace.com/smileys/mgqueen.gif)
-
@Birdie: THanks! I have seen pics of the antwerp zoo and it looks pretty awesome! I would say you should definitely get a zoo set, but it is a slippery slope for sure. Before you know it you're searching ebay for every animal playmobil ever made. 8}
@Daniela: Thanks so much! I'm glad you have enjoyed it! I also go to zoos everywhere that I travel. I just love seeing the way they do things different places.
@Elaine: Yep, that's you! I wondered if you'd notice yourself in there. You've been on a shelf along with a few other avatars, but that family needed you. ;D
-
Oh bonnie, i just recognized this thread today. This is an absolute awesome setup with so many cool ideas and lovely details. I love the giraffe-feeding-station, the souvenir-shop and the panda-enclosure with the torii.
I hope you'll have a separate room for your zoo one day and i hope i'll have one, too ;)
Wish you a nice weekend.
ZooKeeper
-
Thank you, zookeeper! ;D
I hope you get to set up your zoo sometime soon, too! We'd all love to see. :yup:
-
This is the 4th time i saw these pictures and set up. As i absolutely love animals ( cat shelter etc ) I can spmehow associate wityh some of the stories in these pictures where animals are happy and well looked after , something that int eh real world most people unfortunatrlly neglect . Anyways, lets see more pictures shall we ???? ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
-
Very nice zoo Bonnie!
-
Thank you, Elric!
George, I've showed about 80 pics; how many do you want?

Bonniebeth you are in trouble !!!!
BY popular demand you have tl post more pictures and perhaps a photostory with al these animals, etc etc ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
-
   Alright, alright! I guess I could take a few more pics and try to show some details and different angles that might have been missed. And I did make some slight changes so I'll show that. Also, don't miss the youtube link I posted with a video of the whole diorama.
As for a photostory.... I've been wanting to make one but seem to have writer's block. :-\ Unfortunately, I'm not very creative when it comes to photostory ideas. But I'll see what I can do. I have to take it all down Friday.
-
Wow, an amazing set up BB.  I haven't been around latetly because I was moving. I'm all settled now except for all my playmo in crates :-[
Speaking of zoos... I have moved to a suburb of Omaha, NE. Omaha has the Henry Doorly Zoo which is quite awesome. Can't wait to go!
-
Oh, wow! Yes you have to go see it! That's one of the zoos I really dream of getting to go see. :cloud9: With the geodesic desert dome and all. I'd love to go see that one, San Diego Zoo and Safari Park, and the Sedgwick County Zoo in Witchita. And the Memphis Zoo also.
-
I went to the San Diego zoo when I was a kid, I was pretty young but remember it being pretty amazing especially the white tigers!

That's the first zoo I ever saw where lions have their own car.
Must be some very wealthy lions :P.
-
 Yep, or they killed some people on safari! I've actually seen safari jeeps in the exhibit at two different zoos, one had a jeep in the lion exhibit and another had it partially in the cheetah exhibit and partially out, with a glass wall, so you could sit in the front seat and a cheetah could jump in the back and you could take a really great picture! I may try to reproduce that next time I set up the zoo.
-
Thanks for all the extra photos bb!! Great details!!!
-
George, I've showed about 80 pics; how many do you want?
Well, I'm a bit late (was away = EUROPE!) and I'm not George but... ALL OF THEM!
Great pics. Thanks for posting them! Your great setup makes me wanna buy all the zoo sets. But I have no space :(
-
I don't have space for them either, but it doesn't stop me!   They're just too great to pass up!
-
This is one fabulous zoo! There's so much to see! Too bad we didn't get to see the playground, petting zoo or restaurant. I'd have particularly loved to see the zoo themed restaurant. Maybe next time?
-
Looks like someone lost a bucket of chocolate ice cream in the giraffe exhibit :P

Yes, I'm thinking next time i have time to do a diorama, I'll skip the exhibits and set up the stuff I didn't do this time. I need to work on the zoo-themed restaurant. I haven't really given it a lot of thought yet, but I do have a few ideas. I need to put in a DS order for furniture, or start scouring ebay. I was thinking of more animal print chairs, and maybe maps of various continents on the table tops, showing kinds of animals found in that continent.... I'll need to work on it.

Did you see my playmomountains? REALLY no space.. Besides, I have the older zoos.. (I know, so what?) Though this latest one is by far the prettiest. But I'm trying hard to do that restraint thing..
I'd love to see the restaurant too.
-
These are great additions bb... I loved the baby harness and the daiper bag ;D ;D
btw is Gabriella at the zoo.... I don't think I saw her. oh! we could make a "where's wally?" kinda thing! ;D
-
Yes, Gabriella is in there, though of course she's with a babysitter since my avatar is at work. ;) She's pretty prominent in a few pics, really. If you look at the first set, she can be spotted. ;D Actually she can be seen in both sets.
-
oh ! yes I saw her feeding a jiraffe!
-
Yep! she looks excited about it too, doesn't she? ;D
-
Thanks for all the extra pictures, BonnieBeth. They are super and your layouts are so clever! There is so much to see, I just want to look at the scenes over and over again. :yup: I think one of my favorite snaps is of the lioness looking through the glass wall at the baby. That is so cute!
Joe
-
 Yes, I liked that one too! Thanks, Joe. Btw, do you recognize a few system x pieces and the counter in the gift shop? ;)
-
Btw, do you recognize a few system x pieces and the counter in the gift shop? ;)
They look stunning!
-
Yeah, they really stand apart from other system x parts, don't they? :P
But seriously, thanks for those! I couldn't have finished the gift shop without them! ;D
-
great new close up pics Bonnie!
that jeep inside the lions enclosure reminded me of a movie where a family has to stay inside an out-of-gas safari jeep because they were lost and with lions around... :o scary! (don't remember the name btw)
-
Had to have another look this morning, Bonnie. I am blown away by all the water ways running through the zoo! I think they are terrific and so well done. ;D
Joe
-
Thanks, Joe! One of the best zoos I've been to, the Fort Worth Zoo, has so much water everywhere, and that was to me very impressive that everywhere I looked there was beautiful clean, clear water flowing through the exhibits, forming waterfalls, wading pools, and huge pools for elephants to swim in. It makes a zoo so much prettier than just having a stagnant concrete pool here and there to barely meet the needs of the animals. So my inspiration came from there.
Sadly, I had to pick the zoo up and put it away yesterday. :( It took me all day to do it. But everything is now even more organized than before. I put everything needed for each individual exhibit in its own bag, so next time I can set up a lot quicker, minus the animals. They are still organized seperately so I can get them out for other uses more easily.
Now I'm going to start focusing on some customizing... I have fencing to paint, DS orders to send off, a restaurant to design and build, a custom animal to make ;D, some more gift shop items, and a couple of small custom surprises for next time. I also want to build a terrarium, and I have some ideas to tremendously improve the marine area of the zoo that I think could be totally awesome if I can muster the creativity to pull it off effectively.
-
Wow Bonie you really like animals. I think anyone can tell by what you have done here!
I love it has great pics and one thing i really love is that you took your time to do this great zoo!
I am impressed!! :)9  :yippee:

Emily  :woohoo:

Thank you Emily! Yes, I do like animals very much!
I'm glad you liked the pictures. :)

I think you're talking about "Prey" http://www.imdb.de/title/tt0468536/ (http://www.imdb.de/title/tt0468536/)
...one of those movies that seems to be really stupid at the beginning but gets better and better while you're watching them even without a high body count for an animal-horror-b-movie.
-
I hope you're happy, bonniebeth.. Partly thanks to your display, the zoos are now on my favorites list on playmobil. Meaning they're to buy. AGH.
Will get the zoo, the asian, and probably the petting zoo... though from there I only REALLY want the waterfall...
-
 Glad to know I could be a bad influence on a fellow playmo-addict. ;) You won't regret these sets, they're awesome! Yeah, the only things I used out of that petting zoo were the water fall and people, and surprisingly a use came up for that fencing. but the structure stinks.
Word of advice, though. You might as well go ahead and add at least one of these to your list now: http://store.playmobilusa.com/on/demandware.store/Sites-US-Site/en_US/Product-Show?pid=7476&cgid=Ds_Zaeune The exhibits are pathetically small the way they come. The poor elephants don't have room to move!
-
I thought of that, but it's another expense... We have a couple other zoos, and will have to use all the fencing (including western cow and sheep fencing)..
It is a shame about that waterfall... it's not on add ons, is it? We have the older petting zoo... and plenty of those animals anyways.
-
It's not an add-on yet, but I hope it will be. It's the most beautiful water base playmobil has ever produced, IMO, and most people don't even notice it, buried in a theme that doesn't interest them.
-

Exactly! And the set is SO big (read expensive)... And nothing else about it is really interesting.. The "hut" is.. bad. And we have all the rest. I mean, the black girl is cute, and so is the boy in sandals, but..
And I suppose it's not viable to get it from parts...
I think I'll start with the other two sets.... but not now, that I disgraced myself yesterday... :-[
-
It's really not that many parts to it, if you don't count the shrubbery and all.... but you might run into the thing where it's such a key part of the set they won't let you order it. ::)
-

Right... I will leave that for last.... maybe it'll show up in a more interesting set, or as an add on...
-
Thanks for posting these extra pics bb (and thanks George for asking). This is such a great project, I really love the amount of detail you can put in Zoo diorama's that make people instantly grasp what it is because it is something they have experienced already.
Looking forward to your next set-up :-)
-Gis
-
Thanks, Gis. Yes, I think setting up a zoo is just so much fun. nobody goes to a zoo if they don't like it, so it's easy to set up a diorama of a bunch of smiling people having a good time, and it's believable, since that's what you really see at a zoo. I can't wait until next time i get to set it up, especially since I'm working on some exciting new customs. ;D I hope you get to really set yours up sometime soon too! i'd love to see it.
-
impressive job remained stunned keep it up

Thanks, ryan!

Thank you Atto! ;D

Wonderfull Collection. So many nice animals - my son would go crazy when he would be in one room with them...great dio !
-
Thanks, skywalker!
-
impressive setup BB
but i have a question about the elephant,
what color is that
have you modify it?
-
Yes, I painted it to be a bronze statue. I need to get a pedestal for it to stand on, and try to repose it. The joints are extremely stiff, and when I finally move them, I may need to touch up the paint. There was a thread about it back when I first painted it, here: http://www.playmofriends.com/forum/index.php?topic=6347.0
-
WOW!!!! It looks really cool like that BB!
I also loved the color you painted it! THANKS :thanks: :thanks:

This zoo is very impressive !!!!! i always thought many circus sets would suit a massive zoo nicely btw :)

I can't believe I just found this! It's amazing!

Thank you for your very nice comments everyone! ;D
You're making me get the itch to set things up again! I may set up a few exhibits to make a photo story or something. i also need to post pics of my improved gift shop that I've been working on.

You're right beacuse the internet shop (http://www.webgigant.eu/Playmobil/Boswachter-of-Avontuur/5004-Boswachtershuis-Mega-Set (http://www.webgigant.eu/Playmobil/Boswachter-of-Avontuur/5004-Boswachtershuis-Mega-Set)) who offers this set get there PM from america.
When I placed an order by webgigant a couple of months ago and decided to pick up the order at the magazine instead of paying delevering costs the woman behind the counter told me they got their PM from there. That way I could buy a lot of romans. They even had the gauls on their site (but they couldn't deliver them anymore :()
So yes it could be an US special. :)

I love so many details, like the use of the Jungle Ruin (3015), the huge polar landscape for the polar bears (from 3184), and your gift shop is utterly AMAZING!!! :woohoo:
I'm so glad to finally see this. :confetti:
Thanks so much, Robbie! Glad you like my masterpiece. 8-) I was just looking at the video of the diorama this morning and wanting to set it all up again. Or at least set up the "other half." And then I get up this morning to find this thread resurrected... maybe I should get to work! ;D
-
maybe I should get to work! ;D
yeah .. and with woopeckers this time also ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
-
 Yeah, I need to get some woodpeckers! I still don't have any, or the light green birds either.
-
The playmo animals are sooo cool , next time i am at the den i will take some pictures of the animals in my small pine and oak forrest ... :)
-
I always tried to refrain myself from buying anything zoo-related because I wouldn't be able to stop.
But I got the Asian zoo for my birthday in November. And the beast is unleashed now :-[
-
A bit late but, great display. :)
I only have forest animals myself and some dogs and horses, still planning to get a monkey in the old style though to be used for the pirate theme. They just look so funny, and they really seem to enjoy that hammock in your zoo. ;)

Thank you, Rhalius. :)
Birdie, welcome aboard! ;D

This is amazing. :)9 :)9 :)9 :)9 :)9 :)9
You have done a great work with very nice ideas and all the scenes with all these small details are fantastic.
Congratulations!!!
George.

Thanks so much! That means a lot coming from someone who does such beautiful dioramas. :)
-
Have you ever considered doing a little story in this zoo? like an escaped monkey causing mischief or a kid getting into trouble? :)

Oh yes, definitely, I have a few in mind. However, it's difficult to do a story when the whole thing is set up as such a tightly packed diorama, just like trying to film a movie in a real house. It works better to set up "movie sets" for a photo story. So I have plans to set up something like that when I have the time, just a few exhibits and the stuff I need for the story.
-
sounds great, looking forward to it. :)
-
What an amazing set up ! and that's only half of it? :omg: can't wait to see the other half, I dread to think what the set up time for the whole lot would be, anyway, well done ! :)9 and :thanks: for sharing it with us. It really is amazing, now desperately trying to not start collecting yet another theme here, I've spent a couple of nights sat up late just looking through the photo's,
Now for the evil part >:D :loco: :giggle: :evilplan: :giggle: We have a local zoo here that's built around a ruined castle, so start stockpiling the steck ! ;D ;) Oh yeah, and they did have a large dinosaur exhibit at one point too, now what other themes can we work into this ? Well, the ambulance, police & fire stations, followed by the town centre used to be at the end of the road from the back gate and the hospital and sports field was just across the fields & railway yard off to one side. ::) :hmm:
-
Thanks so much! A zoo built around an old castle sounds AWESOME!!! What zoo is that?
I do plan to have a dino exhibit. ;D I'm also going to incorporate several other themes into a little children's village... a teepee kids can go in, a roman chariot they can get on, a pyramid with a maze in it that kids can go through ;) ... all sorts of stuff like that.

It's Dudley Zoo, not the best zoo in the world I have to admit, they're pretty much hemmed in & unable to expand, the polar bears and elephants have now gone. Years ago they had an orca in an unbelievably small pool, sadly it didn't live for long. The castle has played host to archers and dark ages re-enactors, there was once a 15 inch gauge miniature railway in the grounds, if you want to include a film crew, some of the TV series "one by one" was filmed there. The carpark and scrubland to one side of the zoo has played host to a travelling fair and the circus, when the circus was in town nobody living near the zoo got much sleep, both sets of animals having a howl & growl session at eachother long into the night. Birdwatchers in the woods to the rear of the zoo got a surprise one Sunday when a penguin came waddling down the track, a warthog managed to get loose in the zoo grounds, a local policeman got a surprise early one morning when he came face to face with a camel in the marketplace, a Marabou Stork got loose while having its wings clipped and managed to land on the roof of the hospital, a bird well over 4 feet tall with a beak like a pair of garden shears, the hospital porters decided to capture it & it cornered 3 of them! When they had the dino exhibit somebody stole one of the caveman figures and put it in the old mineworkings under the castle, guess who just happened to be amongst the group of people exploring the workings and came face to face with the "caveman" :0 According to the old crews from the fire station a baboon escaped one morning, came down the back driveway, across the road and up Tower Street, it came through the fire station yard and went into the back of the police station, they say it caused all sorts of trouble, it'd passed it's sergeants exam before anybody noticed ;D ::) The castle owes its ruin status as much to a fire and victorian vandals as to the English Civil War. Given some thought a lot of themes could be worked in around it, the main problems as always being time and available space to set it up (not to mention the finance for it all) but from what we've seen so far you're more than inventive enough to work it all out, still going back and looking at the pics over & over again. Well done ! :)

Wow, wonderful zoo BB! Didn't see it until now... Knew you're a zoo architect but had no idea how big your collection was. Great eye for detail, I love every part of your zoo! Thanks for sharing
-
Wow, that zoo sounds like it has a lot of issues! Cool concept, but I'm not for keeping animals in small enclosures to be able to stick with a theme like that. And I don't approve of keeping orcas in captivity. Funny story about the baboon!

Thank you so much, Lynx!

I share your views on small enclosures, the place actually got picketted by the Born Free Foundation at one point, I wont say publically what Virginia McKenna called the zoo but I'm afraid I have to agree with it, the animals in your zoo look far more happy, a lot of the enclosures are art deco concrete constructions which have now become listed buildings and can't be altered, even as a kid I was dumbstruck by the size of the pool that the Orca was put into. As far as I remember the path from the old castle courtyard passes out of one of the original gateways and across a bridge over the sealion pool. We're supposed to be taking Mini-Chief on there this summer though I'm still not keen on the place. I used to get in for free, but that was only because I was one of the nutcases getting battered with swords & axes in the courtyard, I gave that up when I finished up with 3 arrows stuck in my shield and a blazing arrow in the ground by my foot, I hope the safety side has improved since then. There used to be elephant and camel rides, I seem to remember kids riding on the back of the giant tortoises too. The old crews from the fire station had a long list of wisecracks about zoo escapees & the police station, inter-service rivalry was rather "healthy" when I was a kid, the police had the same sort of wisecracks about the fire station but I never got to hear those, my uncle was based at the fire station. Oh yeah, here's another theme you could work in, there was a small dry ski slope and toboggan run just by the miniature railway, if it wasn't for the zoo having been there first I'd say it was starting to sound like it was laid out by a playmo designer  I'd love to see the castle restored but that'll never happen. Keep up the good work with your zoo, looking forward to seeing the other side :)

This is AWESOME! Gives me a lot of ideas... and means I need to get A LOT more pieces ;) Love it!

Thanks!

Just visited your zoo again, bb! I love coming back here now and then just strolling around in this lively diorama! I feel like I am a klicky too, having a great and relaxing time observing the animals, siting at a bench and looking around... its so much fun and too relaxing!! Thanks again for this work!!!
-
 Really glad you enjoy it so much. :) I come back here sometimes too, and just gaze longingly at it all. I want so bad to set it all up again. :cloud9:
-
I want to see it all set again too and perhaps some stories from it , like some animals staging a big escape etc ( though I am sure and they look very happy in that lovely zoo with all all their cartakers pampering them etc ) ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D.. perhaps in the story they make an escape then then go back etc ;D
Set it again !!

I do have some different zoo stories planned, but I find it's actually easier to make photo stories only setting up what I need for the story. It's too hard to maneuver around a whole diorama which can get very crowded. Still, if I do manage to set it all up, I may try to do a simple story while its set up.

Wow that zoo is really amazing so beautiful really love some of the visitors interactions and the scenery in the animal habitats and I like the use of the little real stones with the waterfall I think it was I've got several birth stones I think they're called and the look and feel of them is just beautiful. Do you know anything about the 2 keepers in with what look like reindeers, they look like they might be a good base for me to create a good gardener figure from thanks :)
-
Wow! Love all the detail    nice "water" paper! Looks great!
-
Thanks!

Show us more, shoe us more please please bb and with that tooting sound in the background this is do so cool I keep watching your zoo vid! Perhaps some new wing and stuff ! Your zoo is awesome btw do you have it still all set ?
-
No, it was only up for three weeks as this was my mom's dining room where it was set up, meaning the table had to be in the middle of the living room! But I do hope to set up another zoo set-up soon. I'm currently working on a western one.

Cool ! We will get to see some buffalo then ? What a lovely playmobil animal this is ! It's coming back right btw?
