Title: Target Fall 2010
Post by: Tiermann on August 12, 2010, 17:29:44
As reported in the 'is Target discontinuing Playmobil' threads new sets have started showing up.
At my local Target this morning (Springfield OR) they had:

5903 - Lions - male, female, baby lion with cow skeleton ribcage and dog-bone and small Acacia $7.99

5904 - Jeep from African series and rhino - no trailer $14.99

5905 - Zebra and baby with gazelle and leopard on a stream base with Acacia $12.99

5906 - Giraffe, elephant, flamingos and a pelican on a double stream base with larger acacia $19.99

5907 -  Top floor of African building (System X) with 2 figures, baby elephant, baby giraffe, baby rhino and baby leopards, male ostrich, chimpanzee and baby monkey and assorted accessories $29.99

5915 - Police Car with two figures

5916 - Police mini-helicopter

5917 - Police Station To Go set with yet another new print motorcycle. This has been talked about elsewhere and it looks great in person but is $39.95

also on the shelf are the last firetruck and the mermaid large blister set. The Knights blister will probably also show up based on the shelf tag, and there are tags for the carry sets but they weren't there yet.

The full size elephant shown on the box has it's trunk pointing towards itself like the old one but the one inside is the new one with the trunk pointing away from the body. The baby is the newer one too - I consider both of these to represent Asian elephants rather than African like the old ones did. I'm sure they were included because that was what's in production right now, and it is a vague enough difference to not be too big of a deal.

I got all of the African sets, box pics to follow this evening after work.

Just went by Target and picked up the 5917 police station and the 5916 police copter. Thanks for the headsup.

On a side note I saw the big playmobil size lego flashlight thing that Richard was talking about in another thread. Its a headlamp.

I bought 5904 and 5907 at the Springfield Target today, but dropping in at the Eugene store on my way home from work this evening they still had nothing.

I'm wondering if the carry cases, when they arrive, will be new ones. An African Safari carry case might be in order.

Thanks for the pics. Hope they could import these target sets to Hong Kong. I am curious, do people from other market able to buy the two klickies themed carry case? The importer in Hong Kong only imported those, but not other cool target exclusive sets, like the whale watcher and deer plus SUV sets. :hmm:

Is the klicky in 5904 the first fatty with a gun holster?

It's a shame they didn't give the second guy in 5907 a holster too.

Thanks for posting this!  I'm excited and will go to my local Target asap.

I don't like 5904, though.  The Klicky looks too much like a poacher (poachers are bad, bad people ), although he probably isn't since he's driving an official looking jeep.  Still...

Hi Tiermann,

Great pictures of some nice sets. Not a theme I'm much interested in, but good to see the sets nonetheless. Being in the UK, the US Target exclusivity is somewhat aggravating  :hmm:

I think he's going to have real trouble getting the rhino to jump through that little hoop...

Just one thing: I always understood the thing the Klicky holds to be a coiled whip, rather than a hoop to jump through. Either way, I think trying to make a rhino do anything is a a really dumb idea!

Cheers,

At the Kruger park they have a big board with photos of examples what not to do. As a deterent. I remember pics of a completely smashed 4 wheel drive. Some people actually stepped out to take pictures of a rhino up close. The rhino was not amused.

I would drive past a rhino waving from an open 4WD. Let alone change a tire near one.

I think the hoop is a coiled whip too.

About the holster, it is a painted on / clip on holster. It is not a belt that can be taken off.

I notice the 5904 jeep doesn't have a windshield like my 4832 jeep has. Strange they would leave that off. seems like a small and inexpensive part.

Tim was joking.

About the holster, it is a painted on / clip on holster. It is not a belt that can be taken off.

I know it's a clip-on holster, like many modern Police figures have. I have the figure in front of me. I think he may be the first fatty with a holster (notice I said holster, not gunbelt), unless someone knows of a previous one.

I think he was a poacher in a previous existance. I agree that poachers are the scum of the Earth, but they exist, and Playmobil does not shy away from depicting evil people such as thieves and burglars, as long as they get their just desserts.

His angry eyebrows, stubble, and shark-tooth necklace all imply an attitude not suited to serving as a Park Ranger. I think they wanted an official Park jeep in this "mini-series", so he gets to drive it.

It actually does have a windscreen, but you're absoultely right Bonniebeth, in the box pictures it doesn't, and they've even photoshopped out the holes where it would fit on the front page. The windscreen frame is silver to match the fenders and bars. Strange to go to such lengths to hide a part that might result in someone not buying the set.

I have several jeeps from different sets, and this is the first I've got to have four seats. Having sat in the back of a jeep I know it's not the most comfortable ride, but for spotting animals on the plains it's useful, and the backseat part 30 20 0552 can clip into any jeep.

Rumor has it that there is a possibility that maybe only about half of the Target stores might be stocking Playmobil. However, this is NOT a confirmed rumor!

Tim, your images of the new sets are fantastic! Heather should be thrilled !!!

Agreed !!!

That's what makes this a great set, because you could have the Klicky police arrest him ...

Hi

Last night I went to our two local Targets and neither of them had anything. I asked around and finally got an answer. Our two stores recently decided to add a large food area. Not prepared food but grocery items such as milk, vegetables etc..... With having to fit this in a lot of other departments needed to be thinned out. The toy department lost up to 25% of it space.  Now I guess what I was upset about is that it looks like the Lego area got bigger but at the expense of Playmobil. I really hope I am wrong and the Playmobil has yet to get to our stores but I really do not see any room for it  :'(

yes, I was joking about the coiled rope/whip being a hoop

The figure in the jeep set is the same one that's in the Warthog set from the regular African series. I also misspoke about the animals - the sets don't have the Hyena either. The trunk on the elephant can be taken out and flipped around, which I did on mine. It is most definitely the new Elephant from the zoo sets that haven't been released here yet.

That's interesting Ras and Richard. Having worked in the Dry Grocery department at Wal*Mart, I can see how much more work it is dealing with fresh produce (and also chilled and frozen foods). Are they competing with other chains nearby, and is this a good idea? It could spark a price war on fresh produce, and they could end up losing.

In Springfield/Eugene we have two Targets and three Wal*Marts, the Wal*Mart I work in being a Superstore (huge and open 24 hours), and also across the road from one of the Target stores, so that's the Target I usually go to. Tim found these sets in the other Target in Springfield, which looks about the same size to me, but also acts as a anchor store for the Gateway Mall.

I wonder if the Springfield Wal*Mart will be carrying Playmobil and the Eugene one not? I've seen no evidence of the food area expanding, and as you say, it looks like Playmobil just lost its shelf space to Lego. In Tim's store Lego took up a whole aisle, and Playmobil had been moved to the next ailse along. If Tim hadn't already told me it was there, I'd have left the store without seeing it.

Oh, that's really good to know. I may hafta get some so I can have more families on safari. Very strange they would hide it.

I know this thread is about Target but the local TRU has some new sets. They have the new zoo sets, the jungle temple and a single temple guardian klicky. I also saw a new ghost pirate ship. Its a 4444 cannon boat with two ghost pirates. These are different ghosts. They have red eyes. They had some 5910 dragon knight crossbow sets also. The temple set looks great but at 70 bucks I passed on it this time.

You could start a new TRU thread, Elric.

I popped into our nearest TRU yesterday after going to Target and there was nothing new there, but clearly mid-August seems to be a time for rearranging shelves, so hopefully we'll get those new sets soon too. $70 for the new jungle temple is definitely one to think about for a while before buying.

I just went to a Target today, and they had no Playmobil!   :hissyfit:

To be fair, this Target is undergoing some major renovations.  I think they are expanding the food area.  I was quite surprised, disoriented and taken aback when after entering the store, instead of the usual greeting cards, there were bras and panties.  I don't know if this is a temporary placement or if they decided that it's a good idea to have racks of bras staring at customers as they enter the store... 8}

The one with the Elephant and the one with the Zebra's are definitely priced very good. We are considering getting 3 each or so at least if my connections in the US work out *wink*

The price for these sets is really nice IMO compared to the original price, and most people will not even know the European sets exist so I imagine their ignorance is bliss :-)

I like the hut without the ground floor. That floor more than doubles the prive for the American market. I was considering this building for possible use as a Western homestead, but with the metal cage underneath it just wasn't go to work. Without it it'll do as a small log cabin.

There's a history of these cut-down sets being released in North America (e.g. the 5837 Roman "arena").  Like them personally or not, there must be a reason, and as they're still doing them they must presumably be selling.

I've heard that the American public don't like spending more than $20-30 on a single toy, so Playmobil are pitching more sets into that lower price range. If I were them I'd be creating even more unique sets in the $5-15 range.

Hi

It would be nice if there was a way to find out which stores are going to continue carrying it stores. I travel to visit my Father over 100 and must pass at least  a dozen stores. I do not want to stop at each one and when you call the clerks never seem to know what the heck Playmobil even is. There is the "Find It In a Store" option on the web site but it is not updated . The only item with this link is the Chinese fire truck and that is out of stock up to 50 miles away.

If you look up all the stores on your route you could call them to ask. If they say they do not carry Playmobil anymore you can say "Thank you, then I need never visit your store again."

AT the store here the Playmobil was not in the LEGO aisle any more it was around the corner in the next aisle over. So be sure to check all of the toy aisles when you stop in just to be sure.

Hi

Thanks for the tips Martin & Tim. I like the idea of the call it would be great if it had a little more bite to it rater than just falling on deaf/insignificant ears. If it was logged into a central database or maybe if I write a letter. I hear that if a person takes the time, effort, expense & commitment to write one large companies actually try to read them as apposed to emails .

I did not like the year they put all the Playmobil with the really cheep Chinese disposable toys that one year. When they did move the sets to Legos area I was skeptical if this was a good choice. They seem to attract different clients (in my opinion) and would not stand out for whom they are marketed to.

No Playmobil at my second choice store either.   :(
The only Playmobil item that she had in her "inventory checker" was a fire helicopter and it showed that it was discontinued and none in stock.
She also said that all the Target stores in the Puget Sound area are getting the new grocery section.  I wonder if that means that all of the "local" stores have discontinued carrying Playmobil.
