Title: So, what do your family/friends/colleagues think about your hobby?
Post by: Lindama on May 20, 2010, 22:26:38
Tell me, what does everyone who knows about your love of Playmobil think about this strange obsession?

I announced at work that I planned on collecting Sid Dickens Memory Blocks and Playmobil and got a few odd looks. A bit of an odd combo I suppose  ;D

Whist I have lots of Playmobil I only have 2 memory blocks...look which item won!

My husband thinks I am mad and hates all the little bits all over the place.

Some of our close friends know but then again we've been doing it for so long they accept it. We both haven't told work yet. Who knows if we will or not.

Eventually now that we have decided to GO for it. It will naturally spread more but we are not going to push it.

with mixed feelings but most of the times they like it.  :hmm:
my wife just gets mad sometimes that there are still alot of cardboard boxes going around the house (i can't just find enough time to finish painting my custom-made-playmo-only cabinet).
my step-son tends to ignore the subject (he's now 12 and decided that computers is the thing for him).
my baby-son (10 months) loves them and tries to grab all the samll pirates lying around in shelves whenever he can (he started to crawl a week ago).
for the rest of the people, most of them have no courage to ask me why i collect playmo-pirates and i never felt that i should explain (maybe actually i can't).

I think they want to know when I'll grow up ,....never I say ! My wife doesn't like the funding I dedicate to my obsession :hissyfit:, or the multiples of particular items :-\!

:yup: :yup: :yup:   Then I remind her she started it and things settle down for a bit. I told a Warhammer associate who said "Aren't they for little kids?" and went back to painting his bloodletter of Khorne figures.  ???

Hmm, almost everyone knows...
...but then again I am a computer guy by training, so maybe they are happy that I am not obsessive with other socially more disturbing things. ;)
 :bunny:

On the other hand, I do know some serious collectors that hide their whole collection.  :-\
I think, I am happy that I do not have the pressure to hide my collection (what would not be possible anyway).
 :hmm:

Ohh, and most friends of my son are purely amazed and think, we must be unbelievably rich...
...because their parents always say: "No, we can't get this box, it's too expensive, we don't have this money!"
 :P

best,

Well, my parents think I have serious psychological issues and try to find out what went wrong with my childhood....
My girlfriend loves playmobil, and shares my passion, but she does not agree with spending so much money on playmobil...
My brother is furious (I work for him) because he sees almost all the money he pays me for doing my job as his money being thrown away in toys...
My friends are happy that I have a hobby like that and they would be interested to have a similar one just to get away from reality and everyday life...they also think that i have to draw a line somewhere...
Finally my colleagues are openminded and keep giving me ideas of new creations but also keep telling me that I have to do something professionaly with playmobil...only trouble is...what???

I have not much trouble with my collecting. FORTUNATELY!

My husband loves it! He is a collecter himself (tin figures, most toysoldiers)
My family is shaking heads and worries about my money, but when I am shown with my collection in the newspapers or on TV or exhibition, the are very proud.
My friends can´t stop coming and looking at the new dioramas, I am working on.
My little nephews come to play, when ever they can.
And at work is a little head shaking, too, but they are all girls and in the end they mean, it´s all so sweeeeet.

I am talking about my collection, whenever I want and most times feedback is positive.
So don´t care and go on!

Best wishes,
Daniela

You are so right, Michael!  There are so few "collectibles" which inspire so much creativity as well as being a satisfying hobby while the objects themselves still retain a lot of monetary value (sometimes even increasing in value.)   :)

To parents it's as natural to them as it is to me. (As I returned to collect, in 2008, they took it very easily ... They like playmobil, maybe they'd collect themselves, if they were more childlike people.) And they like my work with photostories (a little stopped, now :-[ -- will "soon" be back in business, as soon as I get a job ...).
(It's a good way to "educate" my mom, in order to give her limits in giving me money. As an only child, they, specially her, tend to wish to give me everything, and, as I got without a job, she helps me with my bills -- not too many, once I live with them. I found out that she has a good sense of limits, and understands that I am not supposed to spend money with playmobil while I'm without a job. Whenever she wishes to give me more money than I actually need, I tell her "if you give me, I'll spend all the extra in playmobil"[, which I eventually did, twice], and she [now] understands I [(really)] mean "don't give me more than I need", and she keeps to the amounts I say I need ...)

Two of my closest friends always thought it funny in a good way (never made any weird faces, rather admiration, and "wow, this looks really interesting" as much as I respect their own pastimes (one of them is football fan ... a real fan ... that's okay, not for me, but it's something he likes, and that makes him happy).

I think I can remind _one_ girl who gave a weird look, as though she was thinking "whoa! ... this is one sick fellow!", but maybe it was a judgement of the way she looked at my stuff, once I showed everyone a few bits in a pub -- I always have playmo with me ... not only the klicky Godfrey Playperson (http://twitter.com/klicky1) but a list of bits as well, in a box (for glasses, with a zipper).

Nobody ever (dared :hmm: ) say anything negative, up to this day.

This is an interesting question, by the way ... :) (Makes us think ...)

Well, I guess nearly everyone knows it by now. it's rather hard to miss though - there's an entire shelf dedicated to it in our living room and a display cabinet as well with all the specials. I've got about 10 klickies on top of my desktop at the office and about 6 keychains as well.
Hard to miss ...

Most of them are interested - and have fond memories of playing with it.
Or tell that they preferred to play with Lego.

I never once had a negative reaction ...

Great question Lindama,

Firstly my parents think it's crazy the amount of money I spend on certain items but overall are supportive as it was them that started it all by buying me a few sets when I was a kid

My Husband is very chilled about the 1200+ sets in my favourite room...I had the collection before I met him  so he knows he'd be wasting his time trying to change me.

My friends have seen my collection when they've been at the house and mostly it reminds them of their own childhood when they too had Playmobil...then they wish they'd kept it when they hear some of the values of sets.

My colleagues are fascinated by it. A couple of them have been to the house and one has admitted he wishes my collection was his. I've taken photos into work for the others and they are amazed...mostly they had underestimated the size of it all...I think when they heard Playmobil room they thought of a small room with the odd Playmobil figure, which is not the case 8}

Often I am asked why I collect and I can't give an answer except to say that I don't want to stop. I cannot envisage ever selling any of it so they wonder what the point is. I don't want children so it's not an heirloom. The fact is my collection makes me happy and so that is reason enough for my friends and family to accept. ;)

Well.....

My family thinks I'm crazy,
My Mom thinks I am just being me and there is nothing she can do,
but never seems to want to talk with me about them... :P

My Dad is not that big on them, but gave up on trying to "detox" me from them when he saw just how hooked I was and that mom was on my side! ;D

My 1st sister thinks I am nuts, and would destroy them if she could, but knows that I would wreak the most disasterus punishment upon her if I found any of my Playmo missing... >:D

My 2nd sister likes them and was set on collecting a few of them...
But her collection never really came to be and I mostly sucked all of her Playmo into my collection.
(Except the modern stuff...)

My friends are split on the matter...
One of my friends agrees with my 1st sister, she hates them till the end of time! :(

But my other two friends (I have so many... ) Are in total agreement with me.
One is an avid collector himself,
And the other is trying to jumpstart his collection.
We all love Wargaming with eachother,
(Though the avid collector has grown into collecting more rather then playing)
And one time when I first started recollecting Playmobil we had all three play in a big battle where their larger force assaulted my castle.

My friend and I are engaged in a battle at the moment,
Though we have left it for several days we will meet soon and finish it. (I will upload the images soon... :) )

And that is what people think of my collection. ;D

My husband has always been very supportive, because being a lego collector, he understands me. But just today, he has decided to start collecting playmobil himself.

my mom got me started on playmmobil, and has always liked it. She's into history and wants to collect the romans and egyptians herself.

My dad secretly thinks I'm a little crazy, I think, but he used to do miniature trains in his adult life, so he does understand.

My brother loved playmobil western stuff as a kid, and he still plays with my stuff when he comes over, but he doesn't spend much time thinking about it himself. my sister-in-law thinks its cool.

My friends mostly don't know, but the few that do think I'm crazy.

Hello

Interesting responses to how people react

It is easy for me as my parents & friends knew from an early point that I collect things in great amounts. I had thousands of matchbox cars @ pre teen, then dozens of for sale lawnmowers that I acquired through trading cigarettes for @ early teens, then I had a huge collection of n scale trains, then I moved onto cars @ 16. Now I have (I think) 7 cars, 9 trucks, 3 tractors and who knows how much small equipment  :-[.

So as you can see my ridiculously large collection of Playmobil is easy to swallow for everybody who I associate with . The fun part was watching their reaction when they would come into my old office and see it all on display   I can not wait till I am done with our new location.

My wife knows better than to criticize me and after all she is mostly German. She knows that Germany makes the best stuff ;)

Some of my friends made movies with my collection for contests at Pixar where they work  8-)

As far as colleagues go, well I am the boss so if they say anything insulting they just get demoted to ditch digger   :whip:

Well, my better half is totally supportive of my collecting and he is often the one admiring my financial restraint or even encouraging me to buy that special item for myself. He has to be supportive because he has an ever expanding book collection of his own.

Most of my friends think it's pretty cool and really enjoy the humor I put into my displays. My immediate family are mostly unaware of the size of the collection because I never keep all of it out at once. I just rotate displays and since they barely gave it any thought the last time they were over, they don't even notice the display is totally different. But that's because it's no big deal, we all have odd hobbies.

One evening recently a bunch of family and friends (young and old) got into a discussion about "What do you spend money on that most other people would think was crazy. Of course you all know my answer, but I was so pleased to hear about all the crazy things people collect or spend money on: comics, porcelain dolls, action figures, old clocks, DVDs etc. It seemed that everyone had something "crazy" they were into that most people wouldn't ever spend money on. I suddenly felt very normal. :)

I must admit that I wondered what people would think about my collecting Playmobil when I said I would do the Kirkbean exhibition   :-[  but both at the exhibition and since then, people have been surprised but also very impressed that I collect Playmobil.  :D
I have just been to a shop in a nearby village and an elderly lady who had visited the exhibition during the time when I had to go home for something recognised my son and came over to say how wonderful she thought it was that I had such a collection.
Many people seemed jealous of what we had, the only thing many people seemed to worry about was where we stored it all!  8}
I did explain that mine is only a small collection and that some people have much much more than me!

My girlfriend likes it, she thinks it cozy, she only hates it when she has to watch her step not to break anything.
She prefers my LEGO collection. Still she is going to the Luxoplaymodays with me!

My other friends don't mind and my parents and sisters think it is easy to give me a present. (you can always give me LEGO or Playmobil!)

As I wanted to have a source for Playmobil in Germany I contacted one of my colleagues from our German office who also regularly visits our offfice.

First he fully understood my love for Playmobil. He has huge collections of other stuff as well at home so understands collecting and he likes Playmobil a lot. So much infact that he gave me the following quote, which I just had to share:

"The mysterious smile of a Playmobil figure is only rivalled by the Mona Lisa"

He then went on how he used to make stop action movies with his childhood Playmobil. How he KNOWS someone at Playmobil and that if I send him my wishlist he will see what he can do. Also he will happily receive all my packets from Germany as the people in the German office are used to him getting weird packets.

I guess sometimes you get a very different reaction then you expect!
