Title: North African and Middle Eastern Soft Customs
Post by: Justindo on March 15, 2010, 02:03:23
Here are some soft customs I've created to be allies and/or enemies of my Romans, Egyptians, and Crusaders.  Each faction consists of a king, queen, a standard bearer, a signaler, and two soldiers.  I have 40 of each soldier type (except I only have 20 of the brown clothed faction), but didn’t want to set them all up at this time.  The various factions aren’t supposed to be from any specific group, but could be from any number of groups in North Africa and/or the Middle East.

First are some soft customs that I previously posted in another thread.  They are variations on the Roman Legionary Special, one of the wise men, and a female from a Magic Castle Theme set.  The cataphract could be Parthian, Sassanid, or Armenian, while the others could be any of those or Hatrene, Palmyrene, Persian, Assyrian, Hittite, Mitanni, or something else.

Second are some soft customs based on the Centurion and Cleopatra Specials.  Like the above customs, they could be Parthian, Sassanid, Armenian, Hatrene, Palmyrene, Persian, Assyrian, Hittite, Mitanni, or something else.

Third are some soft customs based on the Arab Warrior Specials and one of the wise men.  They could be anything Arabian, or North African, like Garamantes.

Fourth are some soft customs based on the Palace Guard Special, one of the wise men, and a contemporary female.  They could be Ethiopians or something else.

Fifth are some soft customs based on the Zulu Warrior Special and the woman from the new African Add On sets.  Based upon their animal skin shields and attire and lack of armor and fine cloth, they appear to be more primitive than the other cultures represented.  They could be Nubians or something else.

Sixth are some soft customs based upon the recent Egyptian bandits and the Arab Special.  They could be Moorish or Middle Eastern.

Finally, here are some soft customs based upon various pieces from various themes.  They are supposed to be North African and/or Middle Eastern traders.

Excellent customs Justin, but what does "soft" custom mean?

I like the Ethiopians best, maybe because black klickies are still a minority in the Klicky world. I'd like to see a whole theme dedicated to an ancient black culture like the Zulus or the Masai.

Beautiful customs Justindo!!! :wow:
I really love your Worrior groups, my favorites are the first and second groups,
though I really love your merchants, and the rest are all great aswell!

Soft customising means you didnt switch their legs or arms right?
Just weapons and hair.

Thanks for the positive comments, all.

My understanding of "soft custom" comes from Garden Wargaming.  Basically, it is that klickies don't have any custom painting, printing, moulding, etc. on them and that one uses only Playmobil parts with no modifications.  Perhaps, however, I'm mistaken and using this term incorrectly?

The kings, queens, standard bearers, signalers, and traders have all been disassembled and are not completely original, but most figures feature their original torso and legs.  I've only modified small items, such as weapons, belts, cloaks, facial hair, headgear, arm accessories, etc.  Although these are relatively small changes, I think they make a difference, which is why a former Roman is now, say, a Parthian.  That's what I love about Playmobil!  I've put a lot of thought into these, and although they aren't revolutionary, I think the result is pleasing.

Very pleasing!

I'm sure you're correct in the use of the term soft custom, I just hadn't encountered it before. Now I have I shall use it myself, since I rarely do any painting, cutting, bending, tweaking or other mutilation of a klicky to do a custom that would prevent restoration of the original figures if that were desired. I don't usually cut accessories either, unless they have already been damaged in some way.

I much prefer soft customisation, as it shows how flexible Playmobil is.

I rarely do anything but soft customising either.
Your creations are great Justindo!
And the way you make them all fit together is superb.

You are absolutely correct, Justindo!
(All of Ralf Gamein's customs are "soft customs".)

Very pleasing indeed!

That's what I love about Playmobil!

i really enjoyed looking at your new customs, and until now i was not familiar with the term "soft customs".  my favorite is the ethiopian grouping, although i like your choices of colors for all of the groups.  i agree with the others, your klickies look like they came direct from a real set.
