Title: BEHIND the SCENES
Post by: Richard on March 03, 2010, 16:32:23

BEHIND the SCENES at ...

Thornrose Castle (http://www.playmofriends.com/forum/index.php?topic=4207.0)

For those PlaymoFriends who have visited Thornrose Castle (http://www.playmofriends.com/forum/index.php?topic=4207.0), we thought that you might enjoy some "behind the scenes" photos. If you still haven't taken the "tour" through Thornrose Castle, click HERE (http://www.playmofriends.com/forum/index.php?topic=4207.0)!

The first two pictures show a close-up of Roger and Alice's nest home!
(Oh, yes! That is indeed David "fiddling about" in the background!) ...

These two photos may show a bit more detail of Thornrose Castle then perhaps some of the images did in our original "tour" topic.

Sometimes it's interesting to see the "scale" of things.

In these three pictures, that show David snapping away with his camera, everyone should be able to get some idea of the size of Thornrose Castle.

Thornrose Castle was built as a "romantic" castle. And, attention to the esthetics of a fairy tale design was far more important to the creators, than building a massive war-time fortress!

Hi Richard

Unlimited amount of stecks? Do not get me wrong, I remember you saying you ran out of time but that is not what I expected. It is a beautiful castle and your collection and condition is unmatched but it just seems like you might need to have a new play-date with more time. I would put on the coffee pot extra strong or pop open some fermented grape juice and lets see it all  I do like how you did not create one of those weird castles that went to the ceiling. Your floor space seems open enough, so what I am getting at is Please Richard oh please show us some day what can be created with what I assume to be a very large collection of pristine classic Playmobil Knights  :prays:

Holy moly, that castle is huge!!  :lens::(o):  Seeing how completely it fills a 4' x 8' sheet of plywood really brings home what you are up against when trying to build in this scale. Thank you Richard for the sobering photos.

I think when Georginetto gets up to full steam we are going to be 'paralyzed' by steck and knights.

Hi Richard

We must have been typing at the same time. Again your castle is stunning and like you said you were going for an esthetically correct and romantic design and you in my opinion you hit the nail on the head. From you original post I guess I got really excited to see some sprawling castle with all kinds of Playmobil treasures that I think you have. I wish I had a friend to come over and help me design a castle with my limited amount of stecks. Designing a castle is not as easy as it looks.

Thanks, Gepetto! ... Guess it's all in the "eye of the beholder" ... as Ras seems to have been hoping for something a bit larger ...

However as Ras also said,

Designing a castle is not as easy as it looks.

And, David and I found that out when we started putting together our "Sleeping Beauty" castle! Even though there's all the Steck that's needed, there's still the limitation of the Playmobil parts. So, the "castle design" is really restricted by the "design of the Playmobil parts" ...  It's a great challenge and a lot of fun, if you have a few free weeks!

All the best,
Richard

Haha! I could aim for it, but I'm not sure I have quite enough Steck parts yet  :-[

Richard, I think Thornrose Castle hit the nail on the head as a believeable real castle. There's an inner and outer bailey, the outer bailey being occupied by several houses forming a small adjoining town. Many English walled cities with castles grew like this, and as the whole structure is developed over decades if not centuries, it never stays a regular shape. I would be delighted if I could build something as believeable as this.

However my intention is to have several smaller castles and fortified towers, with perhaps one walled town with an adjoining castle, but probably not as big as Thornrose. Only six weeks now until our move, so not too long to wait to see how I can expand to fill the space available.

Yes, the comedian George Carlin once said of 'Stuff' (which surely includes Playmobil!), that stuff is actually a liquid: it expands to fill the space available.

But oh to have that much 'liquid', and that much space!

One of our family's favorite comedians. We really miss him!
However, wherever that irreverent fellow found his final resting place, he no doubt has them rolling in the aisles ... (http://www.gardenwargamer.com/images/breakmeup.gif)

It took up most of the 4' x 8' sheet of plywood that we used for a table. So, your 3' x 6' (1m x 2m) estimate is probably pretty close, Gus!

Designing a castle is not as easy as it looks.

Rasputin "The Mad Monk"

First let me repeat what i said in a prev thread that this castle set is fantastic .  :wow: :wow: :wow:. The shinny armour soldiers look impressive and the customization of the white gauntlets ( from the old union soldiers i assume ) fit very nicely for a ceremonial guard ... Very good quality pictures..

I have to agree with Rasputin about the design of a castle. WoT, it is not as easy as it looks.... I had a lot of problems building my plain and ugly mediaval city and it never got finished as it has to move .... To have enough toasts, fortifications, steck walls, windows and so many others bits is not as easy and very often i was limited to what i could do as I simply run out of parts ... The kings' quarters took me 4-5 hours to build and had to re design it a number of times to optimise stairs position, design, windows, balconies etc etc . Steck grand designs like the one pictured earlier need more than one experienced pair of hands. On the other hand steck is the only type you can build these great designs and not these horrid new types . Can't PM see that and bring back steck ?

In about 4 weeks i expect to have all the Playmobil mediaval moved and set in my storage room , on tables . I am waiting for another steck order and looking to buy a couple more houses on ebay. I will take time off to built all that as the one think above al, steck designs need not only lots of parts but also  plenty of time ...
Title: Re: BEHIND the SCENES

Hmmmm...
I still do not have a very hard time designing a castle...
But maybe it is because I have so few steck pieces. :P

I can see what you mean by having to redesign the Kings quarters several times.
I had to redesign my castle a few times,
and though it is not as big as your Kings quarters it took me 3 hours to finish. :-\

Guess I shouldn't be so quick to judge... :-[
and such a beautiful castle like that had to have taken a long time. :(o):

And thank you for the photo of the really huge castle built by Hannibal....amazing.  I love to see the whole playmobil system put to work (castle with medieval houses, trees/landscapes).

As a new member I have been looking through the various threads and have been amazed by many of the things I have seen.  I have to say that Thornrose Castle.  Is one of the more impressive things I have see.  There has been some serious collecting going on here.

I have a concern now where a 3666, Baron's Tower and Catapult Castle may lead.  I watch e-bay and see 3666 castles selling in the UK for around £70 sterling + postage, but I am interested in part sets as they seem to offer better value.  I plan to use what we have more as sets for some story telling.  I am thinking about seting up some comic style stories with my son.  Ideas already forming.

The other issue for collections of this size is the space to display.  Just where did you set this up?

Thornrose Castle was set up in the "pool room" of our summer home on Vancouver Island off the coast of British Columbia in Canada. Hannibal's gigantic castle was set up in a convention hall in Wolfsburg, Germany for a Playmonil convention.

It is true, a Playmobil castle does need some room to "grow" ...  ;D

And great to see some ultra shiny nuremberg guards in action , i really hope they bring them back as a special for collector's one day !!! . A steck castle needs a lot of room indeed,      ,  these pictures reminded me of my steck collection and how much i want to set it all up again and take pictures of it all and share with you all . Thank you playmofirth for digging up this old topic.

Richard & David: Thornrose Castle as a thing of Beauty. There are so many little details going on that I will definitely go back and revisit this thread!

On question I have to ask though, in picture 11 of Roscoes overview we see a balcony with a barrier, and a ruined wall piece. Is that another collapse that needs to be fixed by Anselm? Or was there something else there?

It was also nice to see all the comments made by people 6 months ago and to know how their collections/projects are shaping up :-)

I have those plus a few other basic add on sets. All put together they take up about 1/2 the floorspace on a 4 by 4 foot panel. I love working with Steck. Every time I build a new castle I come up with interesting new arrangements. Of course I also steal all sorts of god ideas form threads like this one.  ;)

Yes, Gaston!

There is a pool underneath the carpet and plywood.

The pool is all finished. It has a pump, filters, etc.

We did not plaster the pool because we are never there for a long enough time to use it.

The wood frame is not attached to the pool. It just sits inside the pool like a big wood table frame. The plywood is like a table top. It is only attached to the wood frame. If we wanted to make the pool ready for swimming, all we would have to do is remove the wood frame, plaster the pool and fill it with water.

And, if we filled it with water, it would be perfect for Playmobil Pirate Ships !!!

Here is how I would do it:

If you have an advanced enough camera, you can set it to take pictures after 10 seconds and then take say 50 picture in a very short time.

Start the process, get in place and as soon as you start to hear the camera go you throw the plane. then you just need to find the right one to use!
