Title: THORNROSE CASTLE
Post by: Richard on March 02, 2010, 01:05:31

Lately, there have been a lot of posts at Playmofriends about Steck. Particularly Steck Castles.

So, perhaps it's time to share ... Thornrose Castle  ... with everyone at Playmofriends.

Back in August of 2006, David Hamer (http://gardenwargaming.com/armies/dhamer/dhamer.html) flew from Germany to Canada to visit us for a few weeks at our summer home on Vancouver Island.

Thornrose Castle is the result of David's visit. David loves castles (http://gardenwargaming.com/armies/victorian/vonStunk.html). David had a great time in Canada. Maybe because he finally got to build a castle with an almost unlimited number of Steck castle parts.

So, whose castle is it? I guess it was sort of David's and mine. It's now all apart and put away in boxes.

David has since "retired" from Playmobil. Perhaps his dream of having enough Steck to build the Castle that he had always envisioned had been finally fulfilled.

In the first picture of Thornrose Castle we see the two North Gate guards, Frederick and Everard.

The two storks, Roger and Alice are two of Thornrose Castle's favorite resident "visitors"...

It took us two weeks to build Thornrose Castle, WoT ...  We didn't run out of Steck, we ran out of time!

In our next picture, Frederick and Everard have opened the North Gates. Looking through the arched entrance, it appears that we have somehow missed a parade. Maybe we can go inside?

Everard, the gate guard, seems to want us to look to the left. What does he want us to see?

Does Everard want us to look at the two farmers Otto and Warin or the young girl Gemma? Or. is there something else that he really wants us to see?

Aha ... That's what Everard wanted us to see. There seems to be something going on up there on the wall (and in the window) ...  :toot:

Hmmm ...  :hmm:
It appears that the Castle "Romeo" of the Rampart Guards is at it again ...  ::)
This time Guard Thibault appears to be trying to woo a young girl from the village named Sabella.

Poor Sabella. She seems to be somewhat interested in that bounder.
Perhaps we should report Thibault to the Captain of the Guard?

However, maybe Sabella isn't quite as naive as we first thought ...
Hopefully, that rascal, Thibault has more than met his match ...  :yippee:

Alice and Roger's nephew, Roscoe is going to give us a stork's-eye view of the village at Thornrose Castle.

Roscoe has us looking South from North Gate.

Roscoe has given us what amounts to almost a "map" of the Village at Thornrose Castle!

North Gate House is at the bottom (North side) of Roscoe's "map". It is also the Town Hall.

On the right (West side), the first house belongs to Ranulf the Captain of the Guard. He lives there with his wife Adelaide and their daughter Sabella.

The second house on the right is the home of Otto the Farmer and Carpenter and his wife Betta. They have a son Warin who is a farmer and a daughter Gemma who is sometimes a farmer.

The third house on the right is the home of Anselm the Stone Mason and his wife Juliana.

The fourth and final house on the right is the home of Gautelen the Engineer/Builder and his wife Emeline. Amaury, their son, is a Stone Mason Apprentice.

On the left (East side) the first building is the home of Dairyman and Blacksmith Turstin and his wife Ilaria.

The second and final building is the Bakery and home of Andreas the Baker, Confectioner and Grocer.

Castle Gate is at the top (South Side) of Roscoe's "map".  This is the entrance to Thornrose Castle!

Perhaps everyone doesn't appreciate the loud noise that the trumpets make ...  :shhhh:

Looks like Turstin the Blacksmith and his wife Iliria might have preferred a bit of quiet for their livestock!

While all our Playmofriends visitors are "imagining" the "gentle melodies" being played by Toly and Odo, here are some views of the East wall of Thornrose Castle.

One of the important features of the East wall is East Gate. East Gate leads directly beneath the Guard barracks into the Castle.
Another East wall feature is the livestock log palisade which is connected to the Dairy and Blacksmith.

The Royal Quarters can be seen by looking over toward the Southwest corner of the Castle.

Suddenly the drawbridge opens. Ooops ...  :(o):

"I thought I did, General. But, I don't hear anything now."

 That chromed armor sure looks nice when it is new.

Thank you, Gepetto!

This probably sounds ridiculous for a child's toy ... But, the only way that I've been able to keep the chrome looking new is to never touch it with my bare fingers. I guess the oil on our skin really tarnishes the chrome plated plastic. And, once it's tarnished, there doesn't seem to be any way to clean it.

Thanks again and all the best,
Richard

Perhaps Otto and Warin deserve another story. But, then again, maybe not ...  ;D

Thank you for your generous compliments, Ras!

Perhaps, Tim has discovered the "secret" for keeping Playmobil looking "new" ...

BTW ... this didn't start off as a "story" ... it started off by selecting more than forty pictures from a huge photo file that David and I took. It's interesting to look at forty pictures and wonder how they could all relate to each other. What makes it somewhat challenging is to know that no pictures can be added because the castle and the Klickys are in boxes more than four thousand miles away!

Thanks again, Ras ... And, all the best,
Richard

because real life often interfears ,health , no more space , other priorities etc ...

Richard thanks for sharing. Great set up and pictures . I love the old klickies especially the shinny armour ones , they are simply the best imo as far as mediaval soldiers are concerned. The castle design is outstanding ahd has given me some ideas for my dull castle. Great pictures also and the story lines are very nice. thanks for sharing all that . Are you familiar with DRG's "Canthábrica"?

It'll have to wait for a while Giorginetto...The knights are in a display case in my old room at my parents house...I might visit tomorrow....
Lucky you!!! Hours and hours of steck fun!!! I am waiting for a big lot of steck pieces and two 3666 castles.... Can't wait....
(and maybe we should transfer this discussion somewhere else, cause Richard will let the Thornrose castle guards loose on us for getting off the topic in his thread....)

The chrome plated knight was sold separately as an "Add-On" (set 7104). Later, the chrome plate was discontinued, but the silver colored knight was still offered as Add-On set 7104.

I like Gold too, but silver is best!
That beautiful chrome armor is soo cool!
I have no clue why they stopped producing it...
Maybe the kids didn't like it when it got dirty. ???

I don't know for sure, but it may be because it was too expensive.

I know the original chromed finish used to wear off in time thus diminishing the look of the items, and possibly there was worry about children ingesting the paint that wore off?

The 4434 Silver Knight was a 25th Anniversary item (I think), and the silver finish is different to the original chrome finish. I hope it doesn't rub off in time. The 4430 30th Anniversary Gold Knight is similar to the 4434 Silver Knight. Both weigh slightly more than a Klicky wearing the same armour and no shiny finish, so I believe there is actual metal in the coating.

Has there been a 35th Anniversary set? I haven't seen one, but it should surely have been released last year.

by diminishing  you mean that the whole attention would be on the silver parts and not on the other parts of the clicky-set??

Yes, I believe Martin is correct. After all, regulations for safety on toys took place in the 80's. So we must assume that that all chrome parts stopped being produced for that reason...

As I promised, i visited my parents house today and got a few pictures of my chrome plated knights....the pictures are a bit shaky...as I was in a hurry to leave quickly....

I also believe Martin is correct about the the anniversary knights having some kind of metal involved as they are quite cold to the touch...personally i think the silver one is greater looking than the golden one....

I have the Gold Knight,
And though the paint will not wear off, it will grow dull if you don't polish it!
And I am 100% sure there is metal in the armor of the aniversary knights.

We assume that the metal is in the paint... even in sound this armour sounds a bit...metalic...

The problem with silver plated armour  ( i know that for sure ) and pretty certain with gold plated armour is that they fade away after a few years especially if they are in direct sunlight. Saying that i have Nurerberg guards since 1979-1980 and their armour , helmets, swords and pikes are still shiny but they have been stored without light for 90% of the time since they were opened . Following Richard's meeting i have a feeling we might see the Nuremberg Guards   appearing in the Spares Catalogue and regardless of cost I am telling ya I will be getting 400 of them on a day without a shred of doubt , the best ever mediaval soldier ...

perhaps 500....  :-[ :-[ :-[.. I want the Nuremberg guards to replace my 250  or so black lion guards all together !!!  ;D ;D ;D ;D
