Title: Does anyone know the scale of PM vehicles?
Post by: flatcat on January 07, 2010, 11:28:51
Hi,
Probably a daft question, but I was just wondering if anyone could tell me what scale the vehicles (or indeed all Playmo) is, as I am trying to match up some items that I have seen for sale on ebay that I have in mind for a project, and I don't know whether they are going to be exactly to scale or not  :hmm:

Playmobil is 1:22.5 or 1:24, opinions vary.  The vehicles are of variable scale but are all designed to carry klicky figures.  For example, the 3181 4x4 fire is way to high compared with the figures and way to long compared with the 3880 fire engine as the are both approx the same length.

When it comes to incorporating other brand vehicles in to Playmobil scenes, 1:18 seems about right while 1:24 seems over small.

Hi flatcat!  Although playmofire already answered your original question, here is some additional info that may help you, especially if you are planning to incorporate non-playmo items into your project:   a post from Playmovictorian on the subject (http://www.playmofriends.com/forum/index.php?topic=3521.msg42990#msg42990)

Thanks for posting the link, Indianna.  Karim's very comprehensive and useful topic had slipped my mind for the moment (just woken up from a little doze!)

Hi Gordon!

No problem!  Karim does so many interesting things with non-Playmo items, even making many items himself, so I enjoy any opportunity to point other folks to his work (especially newer members.)   The scale issue is a vexing one when it comes to Playmobil (I personally avoid this problem by not doing very much, if any, customizing.  8} )

In my opinion, Gordon, you are one of our resident experts on Playmo vehicles and you answered flatcat's original question very succinctly and completely!   :)  Hmmmm . . .  a little doze sounds very nice right about now . . .  :zz:

Thank you for your kind words.     Diane and I try to have a doze every day after lunch as the bedroom faces south-west so on a day like today when there is clear blue sky and a low sun it's very nice to take our after lunch coffee into the bedroom and while Diane sits by the window and reads with her coffee I lay in the sun and generally fall asleep and wake up to luke warm or even cold coffee some time later.  (Diane sensibly, I suppose, has a doze after drinking her coffee).

Do you think you're making your coffee strong enough, Gordon?    ;D

Are you buried under the snow there?  The newspaper here in Boston said that the UK is having a major snowstorm.  If so, I hope it is not causing problems for your fleet of Playmo fire and rescue vehicles (just staying on topic . . .  ;) )

On the other hand, you did mention a "clear blue sky."    ::)

I can sleep anywhere, but we won't go into that!

There was another six inches of snow Tuesday night and into Wednesday morning which led us to rearrange our plans, clear the drive (it's all uphill) and go to town yesterday as we had to for a routine hospital visit by Diane and combine her visit to the hairdresser's (originally today) and our weekend shopping into the same trip. Cold and sunny today but no more snow (no snowploughs either or gritters of any scale - just to keep on topic! )

Glad to hear that you and Diane are not snowed in!   :)

Hey, flatcat, you're in the UK, too, aren't you?  Is it snowy where you are?  Was it being stuck inside that prompted you to start trolling ebay with a Playmo project in mind?   :D

Hi Indianna

Yes it's very snowy here in Hertfordshire, and i've been off from school for most of the week, so ive been going through my Playmo boxes soughting out all my customs that I haven't had time to finish last year.

My reason for asking about scale was for some decals for my vehicles, and also for an anti-aircraft gun, as I am into my army vehicles and  i've been making a fleet of army trucks etc after getting some inspiration from one of the Wolfsburg displays a couple of years ago. I'm not into any of this army Playmo, just purely the vehicles.

Hopefully I will have some finished soon - I'm currently doing my GCSE's and have been very busy now and most of last year with school work, and I don't like to rush my customs  :D

Hi flatcat!

Sometimes those days off from school because of snow feel like a gift - they are a nice break from routine and a good time to just have some fun.  Good luck with your exams when school resumes!  (You must be about the same age as my 18-year-old son who is a high school senior here in the states.   :(o):  Hard to remember sometimes that I am so very very old!    )

Hi flatcat,
good luck with your exams. Thought you might like a look at 1:18 scale cars.

Emma.

Those are lovely cars Emma, which reminds me that I have got some of these in the loft somewhere that I should try and dig out - and I think they are roughly the same scale too 8-)

Who are these cars made by btw ???
The red one looks like a bburago, but I may be wrong :hmm:

Just personal opinion here...
I would try going a little larger on the scale vehicles...
I kinda like them bigger and a little more open.
I am not aquanted with to scale things so I dont know if you can but 1:17 might be better.

The difference between 1:17 and 1:18 is slight and I know of no 1:17 scale vehicles.  The next scale up is 1:16 and that is too big.

Hi yes they're both bburago cars, I've not come across a 1:16th car so i'm not sure how well they would fit. I do know the 1:18th are too small if they have a roof on them but as you can see the open topped ones are great.
