Title: 5860 Light Ballista Team
Post by: Martin Milner on December 15, 2009, 02:04:27
Here's another small set that's been on the Target shelves for a while, but nobody's done a review so here I go.

I could only get one of these so far which is a shame, as there's a nice light ballista that hasn't appeared anywhere else yet as far as I know, the part numbers are not on Playmodb and I think Heather would have got them if she could. It can point above and below the horizontal, and is spring loaded like the pirate cannons.

The two figures, while nothing outstanding, have nice helmets and will fit in with the older style 90s knights. The use of the same lion & stripes shield as in the 5863 small outpost castle for one figure suggests that these two guys are intended as an add-on for that set.

Thanks for the review Martin! You have certainly hit the ground running  :lol:,this is another one of those sets I have passed on because they didn't seem to offer anything new but after your reviews I need to hunt both of these sets down! 8}

Hi Martin  :elf:

Thanks for the review of another Target/TRU set we take for granted. I picked up a few of these and I think I have not even opened them yet. I was drawn to their classic look with modern improvements.

Even though I'm not drawn to collect this type of set, your break down, & review is very tempting in deed Martin! Thank you for taking the time to show us the valuable components included in these boxes!

I've noticed that many of the TRU/Target excusives, or at least the pirates and knights,  include a spring-loaded gun of some sort, but I haven't seen this one anywhere else.

It's a nice little crossbow and I hope I can get more without resorting to US Direct service!

It would be best to avoid USA DS at all costs !

Not a set in my area of interest, but thanks for the review nonetheless, Martin.  It's always good to see what's happening in other PM themes.  It's good, too, to see the old shield designs still in production.

Great review , thanks !  ;D

I find this set quite interesting as one could say its more 'old school' as far as mediaval sets are concerned . The black lion shield these days found in DS 7665/ 7664 fits nicely with these figures . Not sure about this ballista design personally. It reminds me of some other toy lines rather than the  classic playmos. And dont get me wrongo, nothing bad about it , just the volley is kinda weird as is the new pirates volleys . Nevertheless these ballistas would make very god castle defenses on mediaval walls and an arrangement of them would be impessive. Great pictures and I am persuaded from this review to get a couple of these at least

I see what you mean about the ballista Georginetto, it's not quite there as regards looks, but it's a nice addition to the siege engine lineup, and I'd like to grab a few more of this set if I can locate them.

The lion shield in this set also appeared in the 5863 super set I reviewed recently, plus a matching flag, and they also appeared in the 3667 small castle I cquired this week, though that set is 16 years old. It's nice to see some of the older moulds and designs still getting used.

I got another 3 x 3860 in Salem on the way home from seeing Gepetto and collecting my Ghost Pirates. Got a few other things there too, including the Egyptian ship. It's been quite a blue box day!

It's been a very blue box 2 months for me also , the bluest ever in fact  . i have bought 12 mediaval houses- blue, yellow and red, a total of 150 mediaval klickies - green dragons and black lions foot soldiers basically , a tailors green house complete, a smithie complete house set, 3 x 3667 castle, 1 x 3668 castle, 3 siege towers, 6 green dragons , 1 barons tower, 3 weapon stands , 1 vegetable stand, one museum red roof ( very rare !!!), additional roofs , loose steck walls ( lots) . And tomorrow I am getting over the last two boxes of mediaval stuff I  have ( 1978- today) from my storage facilities which are about 50 km away. Yeap i actually consider i invested in klickies the past 8 weeks !!!!! But i havent bought any apart from Romans 2 years ago and Vikings round the same time. I am starting to set them all up tomorrow actually ( got days off work till january)  and pictures will follow shortly, all the stuff before it is set !!!! i cant tell ou people how i feel last time i set up my mediaval collection which account for 70% of all my Klickies was in the late 90s.......

Hi Giorinetto  :elf:

From the lists you are providing this is going to be quite an impressive set up. I love seeing the collections of people who have been at it for so long  :o

Hi Martin :elf:

It also sounds like you are stocking up on a lot of classic Medieval sets and ones with the classic look. Now with more room I do hope you are able to set them all up for pictures as well, when you shipment arrives that is.

There must be some medieval collection bug about as I too was able to pick up some nice deals on classic sets. I think in the last month I bought 3 used 3666 castles @ very reasonable prices.

That is indeed going to be a fantastic set up Georginetto! The style of the Black Lion knights is still my favourite, I count most of these klickies as men-at-arms, and only full helmets and visored helmets as true knights. 3668 is not a castle set btw, but a great jousting practise set, with a great mix of figures and accessories, which I'd buy a dozen of if I could get them right now. Did you mean 3666?

Ras, we have a little more space now, but as I don't have a dedicfated Plkaymobil room yet I'm still limiting my set ups. I hope to manage one big castle (probably 3667) for now, with attackers maybe arriving from a smaller watchtower. Not sure yet, we're still only settling in.

The crossbow ballista from 5860 is also used in the Dragon Knight towers 4836 and 4836. I spotted them in the mini-catalog that came with my Ghost Ship (via Gepetto).

Martin, thanks for your review!  I saw this set at Toys 'R Us but passed on it, but your review is making me reconsider it.

Giorinetto, that's quite a purchase!  I can't wait for your pictures!

Wow!  I recently purchased the last two Medieval House Add-On sets I could find online at a reasonable price, plus one blue house, one red house, and one yellow house, and I thought I went overboard!  Twenty plus Medieval houses is a HUGE village!

I got another 3 x 3860 in Salem on the way home from seeing Gepetto and collecting my Ghost Pirates.

TRU in Eugene must've restocked the shelves, as there were 3 more 3860s there which I immediately grabbed, so I now have 7 of this set, enough to have quite an artillery battery going!
