Doing some checking against playmobil.co.uk on the areas that interest me, all the new, to us in 2009, construction sets are in that list apart from 4044, the asphalt cutter, plus 4138, the compact construction set.  4142-4144 are sets which haven't appeared here yet, but hopefully they still will for those who may want to but them.  4320, the compact RC set, is a puzzle as the new fire engines which came out in Germany this August use that, but maybe it hasn't sold well and isn't seen as worth continuing.  Some of the other sets have also had a short life.  Of course, the sets being discontinued will be available in the UK and USA for another year, but the production life of sets does seem to be getting shorter in general.  I need to do some thinking as to which of the construction setson the list I want fairly soon.

Darn it ... there are quite some sets leaving that I wanted to get hold of. I am specially confussed about the Ghostpirate sets that are being discontinued.

Lot of catching up to do then  :(

Hi Mi-Chi

Thanks for the list , Here it is from DB Link (http://www.playmodb.org/cgi-bin/your_set_list.pl?setlist=4647%0D%0A4660%0D%0A4664%0D%0A4668%0D%0A4677%0D%0A4679%0D%0A4681%0D%0A4682%0D%0A4683%0D%0A4684%0D%0A4688%0D%0A4691%0D%0A3314%0D%0A3315%0D%0A3316%0D%0A3268%0D%0A3647%0D%0A3996%0D%0A3997%0D%0A4043%0D%0A4045%0D%0A4046%0D%0A4047%0D%0A4048%0D%0A4049%0D%0A4137%0D%0A4138%0D%0A4141%0D%0A4142%0D%0A4143%0D%0A4144%0D%0A4155%0D%0A4157%0D%0A4158%0D%0A4173%0D%0A4176%0D%0A4205%0D%0A4230%0D%0A4231%0D%0A4233%0D%0A4234%0D%0A4235%0D%0A4236%0D%0A4237%0D%0A4238%0D%0A4243%0D%0A4271%0D%0A4274%0D%0A4276%0D%0A4280%0D%0A4296%0D%0A4298%0D%0A4299%0D%0A4307%0D%0A4308%0D%0A4309%0D%0A4320%0D%0A4440%0D%0A4449%0D%0A4448%0D%0A4662%0D%0A4468%0D%0A4469%0D%0A4473%0D%0A4478%0D%0A4479%0D%0A4488%0D%0A4489%0D%0A4500%0D%0A4774%0D%0A4801%0D%0A4803%0D%0A5301%0D%0A5317%0D%0A5318%0D%0A5319%0D%0A5327%0D%0A5328%0D%0A5815%0D%0A5878%0D%0A4920%0D%0A4921%0D%0A4922%0D%0A4923%0D%0A5001%0D%0A5002&title=Your+Set+List&pics=on) It really shows the harsh reality of short attention spans . Some of those sets have only been out 2 years. The whole wedding and Sea Expedition Themes came and went so quickly. I wonder about the Victorian Theme , will it be replaced? If it goes there will be no traditional doll house for girls.

Bogro

At first though I agree with you Mark, the Ghost Pirates haven't even appeared in the UK yet, and they're already dropping them?

On closer inspection, I see the Ghost Pirate sets being dropped are two of the ones featuring stupid giant sea creatures, which I had already dismissed as not interesting because I don't need giant crabs or stingrays. So maybe the general public have given these sets the big raspberry too?

A big clearout is always followed by a bunch of new releases, so I'm waiting with bated breath for news on those.

It seems as if the wedding, circus, and sea themes were just introduced!  It's also appallingly early for them to discontinue the Arab Special and the Egyptian temple, two sets that were paramount on my radar.  I guess Playmobil is doing what a lot of companies are and streamlining their product offerings.

I hope the discontinuation of the big castle and the doll house themes mean that replacements are coming.

Will the eggs will make it to the US?  I want the knight and my wife wants the panda.

I hope the discontinuation of the big castle and the doll house themes mean that replacements are coming.

I wonder now if the Dragon Knight towers are the replacement for the big Knights' castle. It would seem odd to still have a knight's theme with no big castle at all.

I don't think Playmo would withdraw a set that was selling like hot cakes, so these sets must be the relative failures. That means they'll be rarer in years to come! I got all the underwater adventure sets, but only one of the big submarine as one was enough.

I don't think Playmo would withdraw a set that was selling like hot cakes, so these sets must be the relative failures.

My understanding is that each new set means that one set has to go. If we get 100 new set - the 100 least selling sets of the current line move out - respectively the least selling themes. Actually I do not find the demise of the themes affected too surprising e.g. the dollhouse was less sturdy than its predecessor and the sets are less appealing than the equivalents of the modern dollhouse. There is a chance for a new classic knight theme though.

As I look at the list, nothing really suprises me. Since I work in a toyshop I can know which ones sell and which ones don't sell. I can say for sure that the doll house theme was on it is very last legs. We didn't sell a single dollhouse this year. The only thing on there (except for the yearly limited editions) that did sell well is the Knight theme and the family camper (which is replaced now in the new Holiday theme). So I'll guess there will be a replacement knight theme as well.

I hope Playmobil doesn't intend the new Dragon Knights theme to replace the traditional Knights theme, as they are both very different.  I suppose I can see the large castle not selling well as it's expensive, but I'm still hoping there is a replacement.

I was thinking about the 2010 discontinued items earlier today and noticed that while some are leaving, others are returning, ie: circus exits stage while the zoo enters.  Some of these are classic themes which never really go out, but as Playmobil must make way for other new sets it seems only natural. Im very happy with the Roman/Egyptian sets, and while Im sad that the romans are gone, Im hoping this bodes well for an Ancient China/Japan set in the future!!  Things seems to move in cycles at Playmobil (though I can't imagine how this Crystalhunter, Dragonknight nonsense will be recycled) and Im really hoping things get better.

Also, things have a funny way of popping up when least expected.....I wasn't collecting the Vikings at the time they were available in stores, and missed my chance at getting the Viking boats and thought I would have to restort to ebay, when the other day I discovered in a store Viking set 5003 which is pretty much sets 3150, 3155 and 3156 all in one.  I've also noticed that things get recycled in DS from discontinued sets and are a great way at getting items that have been missed the first time around.

It's already started, Justindo ... The Arab Special and the Egyptian Temple are both gone from the German website!

However, I just put in an order today to PlaymobilUSA and it appears that the two eggs (knight and panda) are available now for $7.99 each.

All the best,
Richard

Hey Justindo, don't feel bad about saying that. I've said that in a few posts myself. My first excuse was "Gotta get basement finished before i'll have time". Well that came and went. As soon as i finished the basement my wife had our son and he's 10 months old. So between him, work, helping my wife, and spending time with my 7 year old daughter i'm tapped out when comes to having extra time.

WoT, she would probably sit still (and to heal properly, she really needs to), except that she has a very active sister ...  8}

So, about the only two things that I can do is watch them (all the time) and post at Playmofriends (sometimes) ...

Hello

It sure is spring time when you see all the puppies running around. Your casted pup sure looks cute  :inlove: what breed or mix are they ? Even as bad as a broken leg is it is still better than them getting Parvo and having to "Discontinue" your pup ;)

Our kids have been playing with some Borzoi's. It was a litter of 9  :o Not the smartest dogs but they sure are cute. They have passsed the 8 week window and have all moved on to show lives. Just like Playmobil "They came, they conquered, they were discontinued"  :'(

Hey, Ras ... Are you the "big kid" in the last photo?

As I said in another post, you must have a gorgeous wife, 'cause you sure have beautiful children!

Our two new puppies came from the Animal Care Center of Broward County in Fort Lauderdale. They're from "questionable" heritage ...  ;D

The ACCBC (dog pound) said that they were a "shepherd mix" ...  ::)

It was great fun flying with them from Fort Lauderdale to the Virgin Islands ...

We took our dog on an Airplane ride from Southeastern USA to Northwestern Canada... 3 different airplanes! :o
Then we took her back across Canada to the East coast!
And finally back home to the nice WARM south... ;)
Our relatives loved it. Us? Well.... 8}

What part of Northwestern Canada did you visit?

Were one of your three planes a float plane?

And, did you also go anywhere by DOG sled?

NO no no no no...
Sorry, just plain western Canada!
We were only a few miles from the boarder. Sorry for confusing everyone!
We went to Calgary, Alberta.
I said North because it is so far North from here... ::)

Wish I had gone dog sledding!
Our little dog would be hard pressed to pull anything in it though...
I don't think we will ever go on a float plane even if we were going that far North as my mother is TERRIFIED of planes.

Sorry to hear about your puppy Richard, her and her sister are both lovely dogs.  She may not be resting as she should but at least she's kept her cast on.
I had a cat who was shot in the leg which shattered one of the bones. I brought him home from the vets at 7pm with an sticky bandage and splint and had to take him back at 9pm to have another put on and by next morning he'd got it off again!  :-[  (Luckily I worked for the vets at the time so it didn't cost me anything!)  In the end they just left it off and it healed OK.  He lived until he was a month of being 20yrs with not even a limp! They're tough creatures dogs and cats!

Condolences and best wishes to all who have pets either injured, healing or on the verge of medical attention. I appreciate the value pets play in our lives and hope everyone's story has a happy ending.  :wow:

Speaking of Playmobil, ::) I notice in the new 2010 catalog that they say they are bringing back some previously discontinued figures due to "popular demand", does this mean that they actually listen or just found previously unknown inventory?

Back by popular demand in August 2010:

                               4548 - Captain Pegleg
                               4616 - Blue Knight
                               4663 - Royal King
                               4665 - Western Cowboy
                               4666 - Courageous Knight
                               4667 - Magician
(sorry, I couldn't link to PlaymDB, error messages kept popping up)  ???

These specials have not been gone that long but it is hard to figure out what they are up to!  ??? ::)

Hi

Yes I find it hard to believe that they just found a whole bunch of dusty boxes in a warehouse that I hear is state of the art. Remember when Target re-released the safari house w/foundation  :hmm: "Back by Popular Demand" could become something very interesting

Thank you Richard and Gepetto.  And yes, he's supposed to be the dog in my avatar. :)

Getting back to Playmobil, I too find it a bit odd and disappointing that Playmobil USA is re-releasing these Specials.  The only thing I can think of is that they will be releasing new Specials a year behind Germany like they do with their regular sets.

I too like this "back by popular demand" thing.
It could mean they will bring back whole sets eventually! :D

Hope your dog is mending fast Richard!

I agree with Justindo, I think the six "re-released" specials are a stopgap to allow the specials to drop back a year on release in some countries (I forget, is it everywhere outside Germany?). At least that's what I'm hoping for, because it'd be a real shame (and Marketing Insanity) to stop doing specials in the US.

As to how they selected this six? They're an odd set, but not without customising potential.

The 4665 Cowboy was a great Special because he had so much kit, and provided grey hair and beard for making customs. I hot several just for the extras, and his chaps are useful too.

The 4667 Magician though, how many does any one person need? Actually I bought about a dozen to create my Morris Dancing Side, because I wanted the hankies and the top hats. I do have a bunch of unwanted magic boxes and white bunny rabbits.

The 4616 Blue Knight was a nice figure, and the sort people might collect in numbers to make an army. I might get some more, though I already collected quite a few from various sources.

4548 Pirate, his top half makes a pretty good uniform for British Navy figures, if you can find blue or white-trousered legs for the bottom half, either with shoes for Petty Officers or possibly bare feet for common sailors, though they would be a bit smart for a regular crew.

4666 Courageous Knight, I never really warmed to this figure, but he does have a unique shield that you might want in numbers, and a chainmail coif that can prove useful in customs.

4663 King. Hmm. How many Kings would any collector want? One is usually enough, but maybe you could turn this figure into a fat courtier. Or maybe his crown and sceptre would be good for treasure hoards?

Thanks, Martin!

She seems to be doing very well. The recent x-rays really looked good.

If I remember correctly, up until a few years ago, the Specials were also a year behind in those countries outside of the "German circle". Again, if I remember correctly, the "circle" was made up of Germany, Austria, Denmark, Switzerland, Benelux, Luxembourg and maybe France.

So, maybe you and Justindo figured out the reason for the "stop gap".

BTW, Martin, that was a pretty good "review" you just wrote on the "stop gap" Specials ...

All the best,
Richard

I hope you guys are right about the stopgag theory. I for one will be very upset if we don't see some of the new specials on Germany's website.  :(
